Ran TechTool Pro 7 suite of tests and found no problems. When I tried to optimize the drive, it was not allowed. Message says the volume directory is fragmented.

I have been unable to create an open directory replica from an open directory master.I have created an open directory master in Mavericks and added DNS, file sharing and users etc. I can connect, log in, all is good.I now want to create a replica on another machine for redundancy, yet I have been unable to do so. I have been able to diagnose through the terminal on each machine and get no errors except the following from the intended replica machine: Both Machines are Mac Mini servers, raided drives.

I can verify each machine version and all DNS is fine. Both machines are in identical OS systems. 10.9.4 Server 3.1.2. Network is good as I can ping each machine from the other. ssh is enabled on both yet still i'm unable to create a replica.
iMac (late 2012) will not wake from sleep unless I press on/off button. Then the Mac freezes and two messages pop up telling me I have not ejected properly my two external devices 1. 500G HD and 2. 16G Flash Drive.

Running OSX 10.5 and I encounter this problem on a frequent basis. The symptoms are the beach ball when coming out of sleep. I run onyx and find an invalid volume directory. Running first aid from the boot cd fixes it but it always comes back within a few days.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently decided to increase the volume of my bootcamp disk, which I had done in the past using a method which ultimately made the disk unrecognizable. This time around I used Winclone to create an image of my bootcamp disk. I was not sure exactly how Winclone worked and to be safe I decided to keep the Bootcamp disk I had, and I created a third partition of a larger volume to which I restored the bootcamp image. Everything worked fine obviously, and the image was restored correctly to the new larger volume. The dilemma is I had two bootcamp disks, so I erased the smaller volume because I no longer needed it. Currently I am trying to restore this empty space within the main disk to the Macintosh HD. Disk util looks like:
I know I can just create a backup of the macintosh HD, another image of the bootcamp disk, and format the disk and start over, but I am hoping there is an easier way to go about this; considering there has been a method engineered such that I can just drag that corner of the mac HD and voila I have instantly more storage after applying, it seems viable that there is something that can be done rather than formatting my disk, unless the necessity for that of course was overlooked.

I purchased a new MacBook Pro 17" with OS X Lion (10.7.2) preinstalled back in January of this year (2012). I migrated my user accounts from my old MacBook Pro 15" (2008) running OS X Snow Leopard. Almost right away I started having issues of all sorts, including Admin accounts that wouldn't allow me admin priveledges, hidden user groups, apps that wouldn't run, multiple obscure error messages and a host of other issues. After scouring forums like this one I used Disk Utility and not only discovered innumerable permission errors but also disk errors like these:
Invalid volume file count
(It should be 1656658 instead of 1656636)
Invalid volume directory count
(It should be 345764 instead of 345743)
Invalid volume free block count

And now, this morning, after a month or two of all that... and after installing the Java Security Upgrade last night, I can't get into my accounts at all. On first boot-up it hung for 20 minutes before I shut it down. After running Disk Utility from Recovery Drive and repairing the drive I rebooted and got the log-in screen. I clicked on my user icon, typed the correct password, was shown they white/grey screen for a few flickering seconds then was brought back to the log-in screen. I rebooted to the Recovery Disk, ran Disk Utility, saw all the same errors again, repaired the disk, rebooted and got the same problems with logging in again.
I've repeated this cycle five times today, as both a normal boot-up and in "Safe Mode" all with the same results. I've repaired the disk using Disk Utility from Recovery Disk as well as accessing the disk in Target Mode, and always there are the same errors needing to be repaired.
I don't buy that I'm dealing with a hardware issue. My antivirus and security software are all up-to-date. What the heck is going on? Why do I keep having these disk problems? Why can't I access my accounts anymore? Why does it keep hanging during boot-up? Why am I about to throw the machine out my bedroom window?

My wife's macbook pro started shutting down by itself randomly, so i performed Disk Utility Verify Disk and found these errors: Invalid volume file count(It should be 800651 instead of 800653)Invalid volume directory count(It should be 191005 instead of 191003)The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired. Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed. As i do not have the Mac OS Leopard disks physically with me, I target-disk started her mac on my mac, and use my mac to run Disk Utility on her hard-disk, and repaired the disk without problems.
However, this is the 3rd or 4th time this has happened. After the 1st time, i figured something is causing it, so i checked this forum, and found that for some, the Blackberry Messenger app causes programs, so i promptly uninstalled it fully (including associated system files) and this problem didnt come back for a while. Or could this be a sign the hard disk is physically failing soon? It is out of warranty now. We have regular Time-machine backups. We are actually kinda waiting out until the new line of macbook pro's come out..

When I plugged it into my MacBook, it started freaking out immediately, and slowly creating folder after folder on my desktop. Eventually I had 46 folders that were all named the name of the hard drive. I tried to repair disk, and erase disk and partition the disk - but none of them would work. With partitioning, I get the error message: Partition failed with error: POSIX report directory does not exist.

I launched Disk Utility which displayed the following message "SMART: failing". I attempted to restart the iMac but it would freeze immediately after the "gong". I was, however, able to restart from the install CD. I attempted to run Repair Permissions which froze. I ran Repair Disk which reported that "volume cannot be repaired because of an error". I restarted from the Disk Warrior CD. View 7 Replies View RelatedUsually when I go to "Restart into Mac OS X" from Boot Camp's system tray icon it works fine, but just recently it has started giving me this error and not working. It seems like usually when this errors hows it's because the Mac volume is bad or missing, but I have a perfectly working HFS+ boot volume that is visible in Windows and boots just fine. I do also have a second HFS+ partition for data, but no problems with them.

I am far from computer savy so I just basically follow instructions Sadly, after doing so Ive been experiencing problems with my iPod nano & iTunes. I can sync but the songs put onto my iPod look gray instead of black. And, when I disconnect my iPod says there arent any songs on it. When I look at Music in Finder I noticed that I get a few items listed more than once. I'm trying to create a partition for Windows, but I'm getting the message "disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved." A poster in another thread concerning this problem said that to create a partition, Bootcamp needs continuous space or something. I do have many large files, and I had up to 3 GB free out of 180 a few minutes ago until I deleted some files to get about 58 GB. I tried partitioning with 45 GB and got the error message. I also tried lower numbers, but nothing worked. I'm assuming it's because my files are fragmented. Then I looked up defragment in the forums and found that many people are against it whether it's because it "slows down the computer" or "it is unnecessary." Now I'm in a bind because I don't want to reinstall my OS, but now I'm hearing I shouldn't defrag either.

Time Machine has been running fine for a week now. Suddenly, today, I get this error message:

The backup volume is read only.
To select a different volume, open System Preferences and choose Time Machine.
I didn't change anything to make it read-only, and it's far from full.
I have a 150gb Raptor running Windows XP on my MacPro and unfortunately it'll no longer mount on the desktop. When tested with TechTool Pro and Drive Genius, the drive is recognised but in both instances the volume didn't show. Exactly the same happened with Disk Utility and the System Profiler. I've spoken with Apple and their recomendation is to re-initialise the drive which I really don't want to do as stupidly I dont have a back-up

I ran a system defrag on my Macbook pro with techtool Pro and after the defrag is done, if I run the defrag again it shows on the graph a specific strand of the hard drive is still fragmented its minuscule but no matter what it doesn't go away and it doesn't leave em with one contiguous block of free space... whats going on?

A couple of days ago I bought a new album off the iTunes Store. No issues were noted with the download but when I display the Music or Purchased lists of media in the Group View then iTunes displays the tracks like they are from separate albums. The tracks are part of a compilation album ("Eddie Halliwell Presents Fire It Up") but they should all be displayed as items of the same album as a list of tracks beside the album artwork.
I've attached to this post a screenshot of part of what I see, which shows a normal album at the top and a few of the fragmented tracks from the new album below. The Group View has been sorted by Album.
Been dealing with some issues, thought I'd try for a clean install of Mavericks. I get a message that Mavericks cannot be installed on this volume. I have a brand new 2.8 GHz MacBook Pro, when I received it I just do what I've done many times before and used Carbon Copy Cloner to copy my old boot volume on to the new computer. I did, however, partition the drive (1 TB SSD) into manageable and useful segments. The message I'm getting I feel is saying that this computer doesn't use Mavericks, or the version I have (from the App Store).

On attached volumes I cannot save files. I recently used OS X migration assistant to move to my new iMac but the volumes that I used on the old system will not allow me to save to them (the os says it's a permissions problem). Short of renaming the new computer the same name as the old one.

I use Disk Utility (stand alone, on a USB key) to make backups of my system disk to an external disk and then transfer it from my home system to a MacBook and vice-versa when I need to travel.
Recently, I upgraded from 10.9.2 to 10.9.3 and, not long later, to 10.9.4. In the same period, I also had an increase (not a very big one, just a few GB, less than 15) in the occupied space of that system disk. The current amount of data on it is 164.64 GB.
I'm not sure if my problem comes from the sub-version upgrade, from the increase in data size, from both, or from something else. The home computer is an iMac with a 318.88 GB internal disk. The MacBook has a 500 GB internal disk. The partitions used on the external disk to make bootable backups are 400 GB big.
I can backup both internal disks to the external partitions (and boot on the resulting external disk when I check that it is usable). I can also copy the external backups to the MacBook system disk and boot on the result without problem.
But, recently, Disk Utility has started to refuse copying the content of the external backup partitions to the internal disk of the home system. It says there is insufficient space on the target volume. If the error message is correct, it means that I cannot backup 164.64 GB of data on a 318.88 GB volume!
For the record, the external backup partitions are OK when verified with SOS.
