Jun 27, 2014Our IT department at our ISD tells us we cannot upgrade to the Maveriks OS. It is not compatible with the rest of our software. I get a pop up very frequently to the point of being obnoxious for updating to the new OS. How can I turn off the update pop up?

Sep 12, 2014In our house we have 4 macs...two of them are new and I set them up by restoring from TimeMachine rather than with the migration tool as I have done in the past. This was recommended to me as a "cleaner" way to set up new machines (at least on an alternating basis).
On these two new machines I get a popup "Do you the application "microsoft word.app" to accept incoming network connections (this is also for excel or any office product). I'm still using Office for Mac 2008.
The only way I can find to stop these annoying popups is to turn off the fire wall, which I do not want to do (and which I have not done on the 2 mac books and they work fine).
Is there some setting or script I can run to fix this?

OS X Mavericks :: Random Definitions Popup From Bottom Left Of Screen When Dictionary Isn't Even Open
Jun 20, 2014My OS is 10.9.3 and I've only had it for a month or so.
I'll be on Firefox or the desktop and without touching the mouse or keyboard or anything 'var' appears highlighted in yellow at the bottom left corner of my screen and a speech bubble will define it. The definition matches the one for 'var' in the built-in dictionary but I very rarely use it and have not had it open while this has happened.
It happens about once a week and the word defined has been different 1 or 2 times but mostly its just 'var'. The Macbook also freezes occasionally or has periods of very slow loading; something which never happened with my old Mac White. Do I have a virus or something?
MacBook Pro :: SSD Random Read/Write Speed Survey
May 12, 2009There's been a large emphasis on the sequential read/write speeds of SSDs, but in many day-to-day usage patterns, the random read/write speeds are a better benchmark of performance. I'd like to make a chart summarizing all the different SSDs out there and available. But I need your help. Can those of you with SSDs run a benchmark and report the numbers here so that I can compile everything? Here are the steps:
1. Download Xbench 1.3 at [URL].
2. Open the program and run the "Disk Test" for your SSD drive.
3. Note the numbers under the Random test, for all four parameters of small and large writes and reads.
4. Repeat the test a second time to make sure that the numbers do not change. Accept the second test if the values are <10% different from the first test.
5. Screen capture the window by holding down command and shift and 4 and the spacebar. Click on the result window and that will save as a png file on the desktop; the default is Picture 1.png.
6. Report the values here with by attaching the screenshot of the result window. This will give us other needed information like computer and SSD model.
I realize that there are weaknesses to this survey. Xbench is only one benchmark. SSD speeds will vary based on usage. Etc. In the end, however, the variability should be sufficiently small that I think we'll be able to compare different SSDs well.
I'm going to get us started by posting my results with an Intel X-25M on a previous generation MacBook Pro. Ironically, my result will probably get thrown out because the SATA 1.5 GB interface actually limits the SSD read speed...

Jun 3, 2008I'm trying to figure out which enclosures and external hard drives sleep/spin down when either my iMac sleeps/powers down or after a certain period of inactivity. I'm trying to find this out both for drives connected directly to my iMac ports and drives connected through my AEBS. I've gone through a couple of enclosures and external hard drives with mixed results and it's frustrating (and expensive). I would like to solicit your experiences with respect to drives and enclosures that do spin down both for direct connections and when connected through the AEBS. I've started a list below and would appreciate your inputs.

Sep 6, 2009I have been having somewhat sketchy network problems since upgrading to Snow Leopard the biggest one is that large updates to Time Machine fail with a network error. So I have been doing some digging and I noticed on my stats at OpenDNS that since installing Snow Leopard the requests to time.apple.com have gone from 175/day (already more than necessary) to 1745/day. Also the requests made by OpenDNS updater to myip.dnsomatic.com have gone from 36/day to 1462/day.

ITunes For Mac :: Sync Is Only Two Steps Instead Of 4
Jul 2, 2014Recently I have connected my phone to try and synchronise it because I had some new music that I would like to put on it. Unfortunately, when I connected and tried to sync I immediately found something odd because my sync did not do the full 4 steps but only 2, being : starting sync and looking for tracks to sync.
I later discovered that for some odd reason iTunes said there was not enough space on my iPhone to sync my music with, even though there is over 10GB left of space. I read a similar problem where the iTunes wanted to re-sync the full library with the iPhone if it sensed that it was not the usual iPhone it did an initial sync with. However, that's not true. I am using the iPhone I've always used and this Mac's one and only hardware it's ever synced with is my iPhone. So I don't understand why iTunes would want to re-sync my full library.
Furthermore, I only want to add around 20 soungs to my iPhone, which definitely does not take 10GB and the main issue is that without any recent updates or changes or anything, my sync only does two steps anymore and says there isn't enough capacity on my phone to sync it with. I unchecked "sync Music" to try and lower the space, pressed Apply but now it won't even sync my Music back anymore.

Jul 5, 2010I just signed into my msn on my Macbook today to find all my messenger contacts blocked, and whenever I tried to unblock them it didn't do anything.
Also when I signed on, almost all the contacts I had showed up like new contact requests, where I had the option to add them or ignore the request. When I used my windows PC with Windows Live, everything was normal and no contacts were blocked.
I am using Messenger:mac version 7.0.2 (090123)
as far as I know, that is the most recent version.

I ran GRC's Shields Up and my computer failed the "Ping reply" test. Here's the result:

Jun 19, 2014Found some difficulties while migrating from hdd to hdd+ssd system.
Basically i want to copy system files only (using CarbonCopyCloner) to ssd and leave the rest of my data (music, films etc) on hdd.
I started with installing a blank system to my new ssd. Then Im about to copy all folders from my current HDD, excluding some big ones that I want to store on hdd.
So my question is: am I doing it right? Won't any hidden files be missing after this kind of migration?
