Messages and FaceTime in OS X show full names of your contacts. I cannot find a setting to show nicknames instead. I know editing the contacts would do the job. But it would be very dodgy as nobody's first or last name is 'Mum', 'Uncle Bob' or 'Shaggy'. Is there a way to show nicknames instead of full names in Messages and FaceTime?

Messages keeps switching the conversation view from "Show Names and Pictures" to just "Show Pictures". This is in the menu under: View > Messages > Show Names and Pictures. I have to change it multiple times a day, including every time I open the app from a closed state.
This is very confusing in group iMessage conversations where all the iMessages are coming from the same grey silhouette icon. The issue is only happening on my Mac mini. It's not happening on my MacBook Air. Both are running Mavericks 10.9.3...So I keep changing the setting here, but it somehow just switches back to Show Pictures only:
Originally, notifications from Messages.app would show the contact name sending the message. I'm not sure what caused it to stop, but now all notifications show up as the phone number of the contact. In the actual app, the names look fine. Is there some way to get contact names to show up again?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've started to use Spaces to manage multiple full screen apps and windows but I'm having problems, especially with the Finder. It seems to make arbitrary choices when opening new windows, often placing new windows floating over fullscreen without switching spaces or opening them in other spaces underneath fullscreen apps so I can't find them. Sometimes it switches to a clean Space whist the window opens in a different Space altogether. I'm running Adobe software- CC '14 applications so I don't know if this causing the problems but most of the issues seem to be with the finder and apps that actually run fullscreenBP Â
I'm running a MBP with an external monitor- it's a one monitor set up, not dual so it shouldn't be causing the issues I'm having. I like the idea of spaces running fullscreen apps and windows- the tech has a lot of potential but seems crude and irrational presently.

Safari shows websites' names in the bookmark bar (instead of icons). They are all grey against a grey background, which is really uninspiring.
On PC it is possible to display websites icons (in their original colour). In fact the default mode is icon. Anyway to to do that on Safari / Mac?

When browsing controllers in Logic, only a few show, such as pan and main volume, but none of the rest (like effects depths, portamento etc.). Is there a setting that makes the rest appear in the list? Also, if I import a MIDI file in, it uses sounds from GarageBand, and not the quicktime MIDI sounds. Is there a way to make it take the quicktime, or other GM sounds instead of the GarageBand ones?

View 6 Replies View RelatedWhen I have my brightness at a certain setting and then start playing a game, the brightness jumps to full. When I then press the button for less brightness, it jumps immediately to the setting it was originally.
This also happens whenever I do alt+tab to return to the desktop. So it appears it happens when I do something that requires to switch to full screen mode cause it also happens with other programs.
At normal use, surfing, office,... this problem does not occur. And also it doesn't happen under OS X

This error notice doesn't make sense, since many of my file names exceed 31 char. This error message pops up when saving documents, esp. web pages. As a consequence, OSX will refuse to let me save the file, until I shorten the name and so remove informative identifying features of the file name. But most of the time, OSX is perfectly happy to save files with names longer than 31 char. How can I get this error notice and block to turn off?

I use messages a lot with chat rooms for work.   In the example shown below, I used to see the Chat Room name in bold on the left side like Drew DuP... and
I used to have the green dot with available in the bottom left corner with my status. Now all I see on the left hand side is a picture box with no name and the green dot/available is not there. When I have several different chat rooms going at one time, it's hard to quickly select the one I want. I have checked through all the preferences I can imagine and nothing has worked.Â

The Trash Icon does not change when the trash icon is full or empty, appears to be full at all times even after a secure trash empty. View 2 Replies View RelatedThe title pretty much says it. If I uncheck the "show Visualizer in full screen" box it works, but if I have it checked it won't run the visualizer. Even if I am already running the visualizer then right click and choose show in full screen it just brings me back to the music page. This is realy been baffling me.

I put in a DVD and the dvd app starts automatically. So far so good.
Then I drag the movie window into another, empty screen. So far so good.
Then I make the movie window full-screen. So far so good.
Then I move my mouse back into a DIFFERENT screen and type something into the terminal APP.
At this point the dvd window reverts OUT of full screen. Even though I am not in that window, or interacting with that window in any way.
How do I make this incorrect behavior stop happening ?
I want make some apps run in full screen mode to gain screen space, I can do this with hiding docks, but I do not want to hide it.
Is it possible to customize some applications to run in full screen mode without hiding dock ?

Anyone noticed when making Combined pdf files (into single document) that Acrobat Pro only shows the first page, and not the full document. Meaning that one has to manually pull the sidebar down to scroll other pages? My install went perfectly, aside from a few minor glitches, Illustrator and Photoshop (CS4) quit now and again, but removed permissions, restarted and repaired permissions and is a lot more manageable now.
Safari and Mail are almost twice as fast now. Let's see how soon 10.6.1 appears.
How can I avoid having a black border when I make a video from a PowerPoint presentation with screenium.
When I choose the Apple wide screen monitor, the border is on all 4 sides, when I choose my second monitor as the output, the border is top and bottom.

alright I'm a new mac user so i hope i dont get too much hate but i have a weird problem (i guess) when installing apps. When i drag the app to the applications folder then drag it to my dock, it shows the icon fine on the dock, but in the applications stack in my dock it doesnt. ill post a picture to show what i mean.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy 11" MacBook Air recently just started randomly switching from full screen apps back to the desktop by itself without me using the 4-fingered swipe to change desktops/apps. I've tried quitting (almost) every app and no matter what app is left open, it keeps sliding from the full screen app back to the desktop. I've rebooted the laptop a good three times and it's also been fully shut down and turned back on twice and it still keeps switching.
