OS X Mavericks :: Chat Room Names Not Displayed In Messages
Sep 9, 2014
I use messages a lot with chat rooms for work. In the example shown below, I used to see the Chat Room name in bold on the left side like Drew DuP... and
I used to have the green dot with available in the bottom left corner with my status. Now all I see on the left hand side is a picture box with no name and the green dot/available is not there. When I have several different chat rooms going at one time, it's hard to quickly select the one I want. I have checked through all the preferences I can imagine and nothing has worked.
I have been looking for a way to get a chat room in iWeb for a while now and have only seen one so far but pushed that one aside when I saw what personal info you had to put in eg. Credit Card
At my work, a few of us want to set up a chat room that people can join/leave without the need to be invited (as seems to be the case if using group chat on Google Talk), though perhaps not a publicly accessible room. We're not all in the same office, nor all on Macs, so I am trying to figure out what the best solution would be.
Originally, notifications from Messages.app would show the contact name sending the message. I'm not sure what caused it to stop, but now all notifications show up as the phone number of the contact. In the actual app, the names look fine. Is there some way to get contact names to show up again?
Is there any way to make the Messages app show names and pictures by default in groups? It's kind of annoying to have to set that every time. I'm hoping Yosemite may add this option.
In order to use my mail, I now have to use the browser instead of my mail application because of the new "upgrade". Unfortunately, my online mailbox keeps blacking out saying that my messages more than a week old cannot be displayed at this time. I cannot upgrade to Lion because I use software with my clients that is no longer supported in Lion.
Messages keeps switching the conversation view from "Show Names and Pictures" to just "Show Pictures". This is in the menu under: View > Messages > Show Names and Pictures. I have to change it multiple times a day, including every time I open the app from a closed state.
This is very confusing in group iMessage conversations where all the iMessages are coming from the same grey silhouette icon. The issue is only happening on my Mac mini. It's not happening on my MacBook Air. Both are running Mavericks 10.9.3...So I keep changing the setting here, but it somehow just switches back to Show Pictures only:
I am planning on buying a new Mac this weekend and was trying to decide on a hard drive size. When I clicked "Get Info" on the Applications folder it said 31.7GB, but when I actually added up the amount of space of each app in the folder, it only came to 12.6GB. I even included the miscellaneous folders (some of which were a couple GBs in size). If I were to transfer to another computer, would it say my Apps take up a different amount of space?
My brand new MBP is taking ages to connect to the internet when in the living room but not in the study (where the router is).
Two things are odd about this:
1. It IS connected to wifi, i.e. all the bars of the wifi symbol are black, indicating a strong signal. The problem is that, using Chrome (and Safari), when I enter a web address, it just hangs for ages then eventually, sometimes after 5-10 minutes, it connects, and thereafter things tend to be fine.
2. My very old Dell laptop connects MUCH more quickly; I simply don't have the same problem with it. It seems to not only find the wifi signal but to access websites more or less immediately.
On the one hand, given this only happens when in the living room, some distance from the router, I would think the problem is simply that the wifi signal is too weak.

I made a new account because it wouldn't let me log in on my old account and now it seems as if it's working but it won't send or receive ANY messages. This application used to work so I don't understand.
I've noticed lately in OS X Messages (currently in version 8.0 (4226)) that my own avatar is displayed in contact list for other contacts..It happens in XMPP account.

Is there a way to view the attached files with their names ? Not open I mean. Sometimes customers find it difficult to save the images I have attached to an email so I would prefer if they could see the names. Like normal files with their titles.
This error notice doesn't make sense, since many of my file names exceed 31 char. This error message pops up when saving documents, esp. web pages. As a consequence, OSX will refuse to let me save the file, until I shorten the name and so remove informative identifying features of the file name. But most of the time, OSX is perfectly happy to save files with names longer than 31 char. How can I get this error notice and block to turn off?
Messages and FaceTime in OS X show full names of your contacts. I cannot find a setting to show nicknames instead. I know editing the contacts would do the job. But it would be very dodgy as nobody's first or last name is 'Mum', 'Uncle Bob' or 'Shaggy'. Is there a way to show nicknames instead of full names in Messages and FaceTime?
I have successfully managed to integrate facebook chat in iChat. However, I was wondering whether it is possible to video chat with through facebook chat provided both people are using iChat. Does anyone know if this works?
I have a MBP and I use Ichat alot to IM my friends. My question is.....when I am chatting with someone and the chat is terminated is that chat saved somewhere on the computer or is it just gone?
I do not want only the file names of a given folder with its subfolder (mark all and copy to Coda or Text Edit) BUT I also want other attributes like creation date e.g.

How are most people tagging? Just first names? First and last names? I'm going to start the process tonight and I was wondering the reasonings behind people's decision.
I have been happily using Messages on my Mac, iPhone, and iPad for a while. Earlier this year, Messages on the Mac stopped being able to send, giving the following message:
I've tried to log out of the iMessage account, I've tried to reset accounts on the Mac, etc. All to no avail. Messages continue to work on both my iPhone and my iPad Mini (wifi only).
I'm using a 2012 2.5 core i5 Mac Mini running Mac OS X 10.9.3
I recently started using Messages and for some reason, some options are grayed out and cannot be changed - starting from "buddy list" all the way to "when switching users" (see screenshot)
I must also add that I'm not using iCloud nor do I have an iPhone. I use this application on my Mac Mini only
I think I used to create messages in html, but since I've updated to Mavericks, I can't. Where can I change the settings back to html. I have set "smart text" but I don't know what it is.

there seems to be an issue with my mid-2010 MacBook Pro, running OS X Maverick 10.9.4. When in console, precisely every 5 seconds, this same message pops up:
I have started getting bounced email messages showing my main Apple ID email address is being used to send SPAM to people I don't know. Does this mean that I will have to change my main email address? If I mark them as Junk Mail, will that affect my mail?
It started occurring yesterday. I hear the notification sound but don't see the new messages in any of Mail folders. Sometimes my SpamSieve app shows a figure of messages of unknown nature, sometimes not, but nevertheless I hear the sound but don't get new messages. In Mail Preferences when moving the pointer over check-box with smith like "Enable the sound for other actions" (or whatever it sounds) a yellow commentary box briefly popped up which said that the chosen notification sound could alert about some other actions like sending a message, when neither message is received (?!!!), or there some error occurred during receiving or sort of. Is it possible to know specifically what messages couldn't make their way to my Mailbox (through Console app maybe?)?
