MacBook Air :: Keeps Switching Between Desktop And Full Screen Apps By Itself
May 3, 2012
My 11" MacBook Air recently just started randomly switching from full screen apps back to the desktop by itself without me using the 4-fingered swipe to change desktops/apps. I've tried quitting (almost) every app and no matter what app is left open, it keeps sliding from the full screen app back to the desktop. I've rebooted the laptop a good three times and it's also been fully shut down and turned back on twice and it still keeps switching.

When I have my brightness at a certain setting and then start playing a game, the brightness jumps to full. When I then press the button for less brightness, it jumps immediately to the setting it was originally.
This also happens whenever I do alt+tab to return to the desktop. So it appears it happens when I do something that requires to switch to full screen mode cause it also happens with other programs.
At normal use, surfing, office,... this problem does not occur. And also it doesn't happen under OS X

I converted a Blu Ray movie and played it on my Mac. I'm actually super impressed how amazing it looks. Full HD movies is the way to go for certain. How does the screen of the MBP compare to the desktop screens and Full HD TV's?

Triple head system (a 2009 mac pro octo w/2 of the gt120 cards).
I put in a DVD and the dvd app starts automatically. So far so good.
Then I drag the movie window into another, empty screen. So far so good.
Then I make the movie window full-screen. So far so good.
Then I move my mouse back into a DIFFERENT screen and type something into the terminal APP.
At this point the dvd window reverts OUT of full screen. Even though I am not in that window, or interacting with that window in any way.
How do I make this incorrect behavior stop happening ?

I want make some apps run in full screen mode to gain screen space, I can do this with hiding docks, but I do not want to hide it.
Is it possible to customize some applications to run in full screen mode without hiding dock ?

When using certain apps in fullscreen hovering the mouse over the top of the screen produces the menu bar, AND a title bar which is interfering with screen real estate.Â
How do I remove it?Â
The screenshot below is with a youtube video playing in fullscreen, and the menu bar popped down.
The title bar saying "Safari" and with the green button is the one I want removed. This title bar seems to pop down in Java and Flash apps, and it's particularly irritating when the pop-down steals screen real-estate (photoshop, bitwig, Flas-player, etc.). Ideally I would like to stop the menu bar from popping down as well but it doesn't seem possible.Â

Where is the system-level setting to ensure that, even when I maximize an application, the menu bar is still visible. I don't like having to move the mouse to see the battery life, wifi signal, date etc. I'm on Yosemite, if it matters. To be clear, I'm not looking for a workaround that will provide these various bits of information elsewhere. I want to know how to mandate the menu bar stay visible.

I've started to use Spaces to manage multiple full screen apps and windows but I'm having problems, especially with the Finder. It seems to make arbitrary choices when opening new windows, often placing new windows floating over fullscreen without switching spaces or opening them in other spaces underneath fullscreen apps so I can't find them. Sometimes it switches to a clean Space whist the window opens in a different Space altogether. I'm running Adobe software- CC '14 applications so I don't know if this causing the problems but most of the issues seem to be with the finder and apps that actually run fullscreenBP Â
I'm running a MBP with an external monitor- it's a one monitor set up, not dual so it shouldn't be causing the issues I'm having. I like the idea of spaces running fullscreen apps and windows- the tech has a lot of potential but seems crude and irrational presently.

I'm looking for a way to keep distraction to a minimum when working. I'd like to have an app (or a setting) that enables me to automatically hide any apps that I switch out of. Are there any apps or hidden settings within OS X out there that would solve this issue for me? I know about Spirited Away, but it doesn't work for me and hasn't been updated in a while.
I'm running OS X v10.6.1.

Okay, I am running OS 10.5, and one of my kids did something to the desktop that makes it look "jumpy". When moving the mouse, the screen moves also, since not everything fits on the screen any longer. To see the dock, you move the mouse down, but then the menu bar at the top disappears. It's almost like they did something to make the screen larger than the display, so not everything on the desktop can fit the display (iMac). Luckily, it is not my user account, but still, it is driving me nuts!!

Suddenly on start up from sleep mode I have prior windows of my email client and my browser (Entourage and Chrome) frozen. I have both of these set as start up items and new versions will open and are operative but the old windows for both remain like a screen shot. Along the menu bar is a 'ghost' image-a menu bar in faded gray and slightly blurred- behind the exiting one that is operable. I have repaired permissions, re set pram...it will not go away or move. I am on mcp OS 10.7.3. Have not installed anything newm in last few days.

I just purchased a Mac Mini and am using a DVI to HDMI cable to connect it to my 42" Sony KDF-E42A10. I am unable to achieve full-screen resolution and downloaded SwitchResX to manually adjust the display. Does anyone know the timing parameters for the Sony or how to achieve full-screen resoltuion?

Sometimes, I'm browsing the web, and Lion will slide back to my desktop, with the menu bar at the top of the screen (the white one) still showing Opera as the active application. Then, after a few seconds, it'll switch back. Then back again. It happens during casual browsing, when I'm filling out an HTML form (like this one), and in applications besides Opera, like iTunes, Mail and Final Cut.I've tried kill-all Dock and restarting the Finder through the force quit menu, to no avail.

I'm verifying such an annoying problem, mostly at startup that appears to solve automatically after OS Mavericks is running. Â
Sometimes my iMac boot until the login windows in 45 seconds which is very good, but most of times I have to wait 30-40 minutes for the login windows to appears

Using the following command in Terminal:

I'm using a 2.33 GHz MacBook Pro running the latest version of SL. I periodically like to step away from my desk, so I'll click on my name in my Mac's menu bar to initialize 'fast user-switching', so that no one could use my computer without entering a password (similar to "lock" in Windows XP+). When I log back in however, I find that the desktop background that I had set was automatically changed to the default SL background. Could any of ya'll provide an explanation as to why this happens?

I'm currently studying for the GRE, and here's my current setup.Â
Desktop #1: general computing
Desktop #2: vocabulary
Desktop #3: verbal
Desktop #4: math Â
AnnoyancesÂ
1) I'll have a Chrome window open on #2 at a website to help me study vocabulary. However, when I'm at #1 and I click the Chrome icon in the dock to open a new browser to check email, it automatically takes me to desktop #2. While I can just check my email at #2, I want to keep that desktop exclusively for studying vocabulary. Is there any way to make MC treat each desktop as a separate desktop and NOT jump between desktops?Â
2) This seems to be a MS Office specific annoyance. I'll have a excel document open on #1 and #2. When I close the excel document on #1, MC automatically takes me to the document in #2, when I just wanted to close the #1 document and stay in #1. Â
3) A different scenario of the previous annoyance. There's an excel document open in #2 and I'm currently in #1. When I open an excel document MC...
- takes me to the ALREADY opened document in #2
- opens the document I wanted, but places it in #1
so that I'm in the wrong space AND not even looking at the document I just opened.

I have an annoying problem with application switching since I have upgraded to Mac OS Lion from Snow Leopard. Now switching between applications doesn't work as good as it was in Snow Leopard.
Right now I have Finder and Xcode opened. Xcode is assigned to only one specific Desktop and Finder is assigned to None. And when I am in Xcode for example and use Cmd-Tab to switch to Finder, it deactivates my current window, but doesn't move to the space with Finder or makes Finder active. Then, I press Cmd-Tab again, and it makes Finder active (My top panel controls show Finder now) but I still stay in the space with Xcode. And further switching doesn't do anything. So I then need to manually to click on the Finder icon in the Dock. And the same is vice versa when switching from Finder to Xcode.Â
If I switch by clicking the Finder Dock icon it then works in two steps: first time it deactivates current window, and after second click it moves to Finder Desktop and makes Finder active.Â
Another issue is with Safari when I am in Fullscreen mode and have also Activity window opened. If I am in Finder and switch with Cmd-Tab to Safari, it just shows me the Activity window in the same Desktop no matter how many times I Cmd-Tab. To switch to Main Safari window I need to click on the Dock icon.If I switch only by clicking the Dock icon, then I again need to click it twice.Â
Option for moving to space with selected application in Preference Pane is switched on and Automatically rearrangement of last used applications as well.Â

So I have a DYNEX 21 inch HD TV conected up to my MBP via the VGA connection route. My problem is that when I want a program (or more specifically in this case a game) to go into fullscreen mode it automatically goes to my primary monitor and turns the other screen black. I know I can switch the primary monitor from my actual laptop screen to the TV however I just want the game to be full screen on the TV while still having access to my dock and everything on my laptop.

I have a 15" MacBook Pro with a 20" ACD. Whenever I full screen view something, like say with VLC or even a web browser video, I lose functionality on the other screen. It never really bothered me until I realized I needed the multi-tasking. Is there anyway to keep functionality on either screen when the other is in fullscreen mode?

I recently upgraded to a Macbook Pro 15" with a mini displayport, and I decided I would share my LCD monitor with my windows box. The desktop box is connected with DVI and I have connected my Macbook through an HDMI adaptor from Moshi. Everything works very well, and I'm pleased with the quality of the output, but I'm having trouble with a screen flicker in full screen games.
When I select full 1080p (1900x1080) in any full screen game, the screen "shudders." It does not occur on the OS X desktop, and I can only explain it as a shudder. Lines and text shift perceptively left and right, and the game is unplayable. I have experienced this problem in Starcraft 2, World of Warcraft, and Half Life: Episode 2 so far.
Could the problem be with my monitor and the way it handles an HDMI signal? The Macbook is flawless otherwise, with no other issues of any kind. The "shudder" only occurs during full screen games set to 1900x1080. Lower resolutions are not effected and work fine...
I'm stumped.
Edit: I should add that I have no other 1080p capable devices to test the output with.

I just got a new MBP i7, and whenever the graphics switch from the Nvidia 330m chip to the Intel chip, the screen "flickers" black for a short moment before reappearing. Can anyone with a new MBP comment on this behavior? It doesn't happen on the switch from Intel->Nvidia, just the other way around.

Can a few folks comment on how long it takes for your screen to light up and to hear the optical drive make noise from the time you push the "On" button? I've seen a few videos and some comments here as well that it is nearly instantaneous and then the MBP goes into its boot cycle. I have an X25 SSD which boots me into my desktop in about 19 seconds from the button push BUT there is about a 5-6 second delay from the time I push the "On" button to any activity. Any ideas how to fix this (if it is, indeed, a problem)? Again, some other folks report instant activity.

I recently had to erase and install Leopard. I then restored everything from my time-machine backup. The weird thing is, before, when watching streaming videos from the internet, the screen stayed at the same brightness, regardless of whether there was any mouse movement, or touching the keyboard, or anything. Now, if I don't do anything, the computer dims the screen, as if i wasn't watching a video.

I just purchased a 24" dell monitor to use with my macbook Pro. My Mac does not give me the option of selecting the screen resolution that the Dell monitor says it has (1920x1080). It only allows for 1600x900 at max. This has the effect of the screen not stretching to the full size of the screen.

I've noted also that switching applications via command+tab doesn't show the icons of the applications, and when accessing "Notifications", it doesnt draw correctly on the screen (the area of the notifications center appears on the right of the screen, but an extension of the notifications is also drawn under hte desktops icons).

Messages and FaceTime in OS X show full names of your contacts. I cannot find a setting to show nicknames instead. I know editing the contacts would do the job. But it would be very dodgy as nobody's first or last name is 'Mum', 'Uncle Bob' or 'Shaggy'. Is there a way to show nicknames instead of full names in Messages and FaceTime?

I have an iMac that is less than a year old and I have very few applications installed other than what comes on it. I recently received a message that my startup disk was almost full. I keep all of my media on an external drive, have an apple time machine that stores the backups.
