OS X Mavericks :: Losing Folder Colours In Mountain Lion (10.8.4)

Sep 6, 2014

Just moved to Mavericks. My very first action is to search for my important folders with colour. Very first question why has coloured folders been removed? This makes an Apple computer much more difficult to use. Which person suggested this change and why did they do it?

I have my own iCal and one for my boss. I need our appointments to show up in different colours so that I can tell at a glance which are mine and which are his. Currently our appointments show up on the same calendar, on top of each other, and both are coloured red.

Can I change the colour of one of us?

OS X Mountain Lion :: How To Create Application Folder In Home Folder

Aug 29, 2014

I'm using MacBook Pro Early 2011 model with Mountain Lion (10.8.5).

I recently noticed that there was an application folder in my home folder (the folder with your username), but that application folder had been empty. I remember I used to be able to access to my applications from that folder, but not anymore.

Since the folder was empty, I deleted it before doing further research.

After deleting the empty application folder from the home folder, I looked up and some said the application folder in the home folder and the application folder in Macintosh HD are two different folders. I don't know what it means, but I would like to have an application folder with applications in my home folder. Is this possible? or should I just make an Alias folder and put it in my home folder?

OS X Mountain Lion :: Folder Modification Dates Spontaneously Changing

Sep 3, 2014

I discovered that a limited batch of folders on several different hard drives had all taken on the same modification date, which was several days ago. It is truly maddening because I keep the contents of may enclosing folders sorted by modification date for critical reasons, and now these spontaneously changed folders are far out of order.

To make it more maddening, I'm using a program designed to allow changing of the modification dates, which has been working fine on most of them, to change the dates to the same as the latest date of a folder's enclosed contents, but one of them keeps changing it's modification date to right now if I merely twirl down its "carrot" or viewing arrow in list view!

NOTE: I had downloaded and run the Onyx program to fix an issue that OpenPGP had with contextual menus not showing up. Their page recommended running the Automation pane of  Onyx as the solution. I just found out that I ran that on the same date as the folder modification date changes. Could it be the culprit, and if so, how and why?

OS X Mountain Lion :: Time Machine Fails Cannot Make Backup Folder

Jun 20, 2014

For the past two weeks I've been having some major issues backing up my computer with Time Machine. It's become quite a process.

iMac 27", Mountain Lion

I am backing up to a brand new - well bought in February, '14 - 1TB external hard drive and there is NOTHING else in there except the TM backups.

For the past two weeks it's been failing the automatic backups. There is PLENTY of room on the drive.

The exact error message reads:"Time Machine ErrorUnable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folderLatest successful backup: [time and day entered here]"

To remedy this at first it was as easy as un-mounting the drive and then plugging it back in and it was fine.

Now I've got the disk utility open and constantly repairing the drive and this is only a temporary solution.

Below is a small sample of the report from the utility each one is dated.

How to fix this without having to purchase a new drive? In February the old external drive I had started to freak TM out and it just erased ALL my backups which I desperately needed due to the same error / failure. That drive had plenty of space as well but I lost all my stuff anyway.

I know the TM isn't for archiving and another question I have is, How can I transfer or even rename the backup folder that TM makes and move it to a 'free drive' to prevent overwriting? Right now I just keep buying new drives which is ridiculous.

OS X Mountain Lion :: Time Machine Backups Excluding Bootcamp But Want One Folder Included

Aug 21, 2014

I use Bootcamp occasionally for some software that is not available on a Mac as well as MS Office,  but unfortunately, I had the partition set to 150 Gb when I set it up which is way too much. I don't want to reformat etc. to reduce the size so just recently, I decided to use that partition for my iTunes folder plus Gb's of work documents which suits me just fine.

I have Time Machine setup to backup my Mac and whereas before I had Bootcamp excluded, I am now trying to have the settings so that all of Bootcamp is excluded EXCEPT for 2 folders - iTunes and Personal. I can't see a way to do this because since I have Bootcamp excluded, the subfolders are non-selectable. I tried one way where instead of selecting all of Bootcamp, I did a CMD-A and selected all with an idea of deselecting folders, but even this way, I am unable to deselect the 2 folders because all folders are greyed out.

So the question is - Is it possible to exclude Bootcamp and at the same time to de-exclude the 2 folders? If not, I suppose my option would be to backup (well, actually copy!) the 2 folders to my TM drive.

OS X Mountain Lion :: Finding Old Notes And Update In Mavericks

Sep 7, 2014

My son's school wipes the hard drive of their computers every year when they upgrade. I made a copy of my son's entire hard drive (10.8) before turning the MacBook Pro in to be "updated" (wiped and everything replaced with 10.9.4). Now my son has told me he made Notes he needs. what files do I need to replace from the backed up version of his system? I need to know how to locate the old files that I can not access by holding the option and going to the library etc because the old system files are on an external hard drive, not an active older mac.

I assume there is more than one file. We have not made any new Notes, so I'm OK to completely overwrite the new notes files with the ones from the older version. if there is any way to simply open the notes so I can copy and paste into Word, that would be fine too.

OS X Mavericks :: Can Downgrade Back To Mountain Lion On MacBook Pro?

Sep 9, 2014

I'm trying to dual boot my Macbook Pro (2010) with Windows 7 to run some software that is not Mac compatible. I have encountered one problem after the next, but most recently, my disc drive has stopped reading discs. I had originally gone from Mountain Lion to Mavericks as an upgrade, and my disc drive worked fine - but due to an issue with the Windows 7 installation, I had to completely wipe my computer and start fresh - booting Mavericks from the Cloud directly. This appears to have knocked out my disc drive and try as I might, my computer will not only refuse to read external optical drives, but it will accept discs, not read them, and repeatedly spit them out a few seconds later.

I was looking for a solution - and I'm not sure exactly which route to take. I could downgrade to Mountain Lion and hopefully restore the functionality of my disc drive to install Windows 7 and upgrade my OS after the fact OR I could find a way to repair my disc drive. The issue is most definitely software and not hardware.

Ideally, I'll walk away from this with a partitioned MacBook Pro with both Windows 7 and Mavericks installed. I don't even necessarily need my disc drive to work once Windows 7 is installed.

OS X Mavericks :: Dual Boot With Mountain Lion And Migration Assistant

Jun 6, 2014

I have a Macbook Pro Retina which cam with Mountain Lion installed, and I want to upgrade to Mavericks. However, I have a need to run some apps in Mountain Lion, as official support for those apps will not go past 10.8.5 (Avid's Pro Tools 10) and I need to be able to open archived projects.

I also wish to clean install both operating systems fresh, and do a stripped ML partition, with bare bones essentials, on the smallest partion possible. Mavericks will be the main system, and ML won't host user data, only the legacy apps. I am fine with erasing my 500GB SSD.

My current process is to install ML from the recovery partition, and use disk utility to partition before I do, then install Mavericks from a bootable USB (already made).

So my questions are these:

For ML:

1. What size partition is the minimum necessary to install ML, plus the apps and run without hitch? The legacy apps will take maybe 4GB.I want this as small as possible.

2. When I do a fresh install of ML, what apps can safely be deleted without affecting the system?

For Mavericks:

When migrating my old user account to Mavericks, I don't wish to migrate the apps, just the user settings and the data. I will make an entire backup of the user directory on a separate drive before I start this process, as well as a Time Machine backup. I then plan to migrate the account settings and data, but manually reinstall the extra apps. The reason for this is I have a lot of third party apps, and some are trials I decided to uninstall, and they all leave junk behind.

3. If I import the user account settings and data only, what cruft or orphaned files should I be aware of?

4. Are there options to cherry pick the settings that are migrated?

5. If I manually copy, for example, the mail folder, iCal or messages folder in my user library, and place it into the appropriate user folder in the new account in a worst case scenario, will there be any drama I should be aware of?

Lastly, a question of Apple ID's/iCloud:

6. Before doing this process, should I deauthorise my iTunes account, or will that be fine when migrated anyway?

7. What will happen with my iPhone when I sync to a fresh install on mavericks, will it attempt to wipe my iPhone, or is that part of the user data that is migrated?

OS X Mavericks :: Downgrading To Mountain Lion Without Time Machine Backup

Jun 21, 2014

I'm one of the unlucky owners of Macbook Retina 15" Mid 2012. I was very satisfied with this computer, everything was great, untill I installed OS X Mavericks. My computer started to have GPU Panics all the time under some "heavier" usage like watching long videos on YouTube. I googled this problem and then I saw that I wasn't the only one, many people had problems after upgrading to Mavericks. I also read that downgrading to Mountain Lion solves the problem, but after the Internet Recovery update, when you are restoring your mac, it restores as Mavericks. I read Apple instruction how to revert os x, but it requires Time Machine backup from Mountain Lion, I already downloaded ML Installer from AppStore but I don't know how to install it.

Mac Pro :: OS X Mavericks (10.9.4) Unable To Install Mountain Lion (10.8.5) - No Entry Sign

Aug 23, 2014

I just received my new Mac pro at work and is trying to install Mountain Lion as the OS instead of Mavericks but it seems impossible. Every time I try to boot up on a bootable 10.8 installation drive I get the no entry sign. I even cloned my old MacPro and tried to boot from the external drive, I still get the no entry sign.

I tried booting from a thunderbolt, USB and even super drive, with no luck.

I need to install 10.8 because Mavericks doesn't work with Active Directory in my company, it just hangs the system every time, we've tried many different ways to fix this but it just seems to get worst.

Any way I can downgrade a 2013 Mac Pro to 10.8?

OS X Mavericks :: Losing Printers / Preferences After Reboot

Jun 5, 2014

I have found my installation of Mavericks losing some preferences after reboot. So far, I have noticed that my entire printer list will go missing and that balance from a previous ban accountreconciliation in Quickbooks will go missing, as well.

I have been able to recover the printers by attempting to add a new IP printer. The process will hang at some point. I'll quit all applications and reboot, after which my printer list will have miraculously returned.

With Quickbooks, I managed to have the previously reconciled balance reappear after running several previous reconciliation reports.

Based on reading around the forum here, it appears that corrupted preference caches may be to blame, but it is not clear to me how one goes about fixing this problem -- or which caches in the library folder it is safe to delete.
