OS X Mountain Lion :: Folder Modification Dates Spontaneously Changing
Sep 3, 2014
I discovered that a limited batch of folders on several different hard drives had all taken on the same modification date, which was several days ago. It is truly maddening because I keep the contents of may enclosing folders sorted by modification date for critical reasons, and now these spontaneously changed folders are far out of order.Â
To make it more maddening, I'm using a program designed to allow changing of the modification dates, which has been working fine on most of them, to change the dates to the same as the latest date of a folder's enclosed contents, but one of them keeps changing it's modification date to right now if I merely twirl down its "carrot" or viewing arrow in list view!Â
NOTE: I had downloaded and run the Onyx program to fix an issue that OpenPGP had with contextual menus not showing up. Their page recommended running the Automation pane of Onyx as the solution. I just found out that I ran that on the same date as the folder modification date changes. Could it be the culprit, and if so, how and why?

I just copied a very large number of files using Finder and I discovered that some modification dates were changed. For me this wasn't a problem, but it's strange and I don't understand why it happened. I wonder if anyone else has seen a similar behavior. Here are the details:Â
I have a Mac Pro running under OSX 10.7.4 with 15 GB of RAM and 7 hard disks. The disks details are as follows: Internal 1 is 500 GB and came with the computer. It is my boot drive and has a variety of material. It's about 75% full.Â
Internal 2 is 1 TB. It has OSX 10.6.8 on it for use as a repair disk if I need to run TechTools against my main drive or if I need to run SpringCleaning. It is about 85% full and contains mainly videos of one type or another.Â
Internal 3 is 2 TB. It is 98% full and contains mostly .jpg files. This drive has a single root folder with 3-4 levels of subfolders. Some subfolders have as many as 5000 folders in them. The bottom level folders each have anywhere from 20 to 300 files.Â
Internal 4 is 3 TB. It was purchased last week because drives 2 and 3 are getting full. My intent is to copy drive 3 to 4, then copy the data from 2 to 3. I'll probably retire 2 since my SMART checks are showing problems.Â
External 1 is 3 TB and is used only for Time Machine to backup internal 1.Â
External 2 is 4 TB and is used to backup Internal 2 and 3 using ChronoSync. I'll be changing this to 3 and 4 soon.Â
4 days ago I installed drive 4 and used Finder to copy the root folder from drive 3 to 4. That took about a day. I then ran ChronoSync in Trial Sync mode to see if everything was OK. (Perhaps I shold have used ChronSync to make the transfer.) I discovered that about 8,000 files had discrepancies. I wrote a simple AppleScript to identify any meta data differences between the files on the two drives. It's been running for about 12 hours and I suspect it will take more than a day to finish. So far all that script has found are modification date differences. I've examined about a dozen of the files and they look OK.Â
Anyone seen anything like this? Any ideas what happened? I have three user accounts on this Mac Pro. The copy was made in one account with nothing else running, but I was doing a variety of work in another account. The third account was not active. I just did a better search of this forum and discovered a similar case from 2010.

It seems that whenever you open a nested folder in the finder, it changes the modification date of the parent directory, this is a real pain, especially in the nested folders of the ~/Library folder. I often trawl through these folders in search of Application Support files etc and don't necessarily want the parent folder's modification date to change just 'cos I view its contents. This happens regardless of whether I have modified the contents or not!

I'm using MacBook Pro Early 2011 model with Mountain Lion (10.8.5).
I recently noticed that there was an application folder in my home folder (the folder with your username), but that application folder had been empty. I remember I used to be able to access to my applications from that folder, but not anymore.Â
Since the folder was empty, I deleted it before doing further research.Â
After deleting the empty application folder from the home folder, I looked up and some said the application folder in the home folder and the application folder in Macintosh HD are two different folders. I don't know what it means, but I would like to have an application folder with applications in my home folder. Is this possible? or should I just make an Alias folder and put it in my home folder?

I have three e-mail accounts. They duly appear in the Mail sidebar. I have dragged them into the order in which I want them, with the one I almost always use at the top and my college one (which I prefer only to use for college business) at the bottom. But quite often they — spontaneously, it seems — move around and put themselves into an order that I do not like, with the result that I accidentally send messages from the wrong e-mail address. Why do they do this, and how can I stop them and fix them in place?

I have purchased a Bose Wave SoundTouch music system and am having major problems connecting to my Apple Time Machine WiFi facility. This WIFi works with various other domestic items. The problem appears to be associated with the Apple WiFi password. I have been using this password for several years before buying my Apple iMac without any problem. procedure for changing the WiFi password.

When I have an item listed in a Spotlight search that is in a folder I'm actually looking for, how do I figure out where the folder is located? I often remember a document or app and want to add something to the same folder, but can't find it-- Spotlight does not give the path that I can see.Â

For the past two weeks I've been having some major issues backing up my computer with Time Machine. It's become quite a process.Â
iMac 27", Mountain LionÂ
I am backing up to a brand new - well bought in February, '14 - 1TB external hard drive and there is NOTHING else in there except the TM backups.Â
For the past two weeks it's been failing the automatic backups. There is PLENTY of room on the drive.Â
The exact error message reads:"Time Machine ErrorUnable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folderLatest successful backup: [time and day entered here]"Â
To remedy this at first it was as easy as un-mounting the drive and then plugging it back in and it was fine.
Now I've got the disk utility open and constantly repairing the drive and this is only a temporary solution.Â
Below is a small sample of the report from the utility each one is dated.
How to fix this without having to purchase a new drive? In February the old external drive I had started to freak TM out and it just erased ALL my backups which I desperately needed due to the same error / failure. That drive had plenty of space as well but I lost all my stuff anyway.Â
I know the TM isn't for archiving and another question I have is, How can I transfer or even rename the backup folder that TM makes and move it to a 'free drive' to prevent overwriting? Right now I just keep buying new drives which is ridiculous.

I use Bootcamp occasionally for some software that is not available on a Mac as well as MS Office, but unfortunately, I had the partition set to 150 Gb when I set it up which is way too much. I don't want to reformat etc. to reduce the size so just recently, I decided to use that partition for my iTunes folder plus Gb's of work documents which suits me just fine.Â
I have Time Machine setup to backup my Mac and whereas before I had Bootcamp excluded, I am now trying to have the settings so that all of Bootcamp is excluded EXCEPT for 2 folders - iTunes and Personal. I can't see a way to do this because since I have Bootcamp excluded, the subfolders are non-selectable. I tried one way where instead of selecting all of Bootcamp, I did a CMD-A and selected all with an idea of deselecting folders, but even this way, I am unable to deselect the 2 folders because all folders are greyed out.Â
So the question is - Is it possible to exclude Bootcamp and at the same time to de-exclude the 2 folders? If not, I suppose my option would be to backup (well, actually copy!) the 2 folders to my TM drive.Â

Over the past several weeks, occasionally my computer emits 2-4 dongs and then the email sent sound, and then it does it again, and again until I either shut off the wireless connection or shut down Mail. There is nothing visible in my sent mail or nothing that I can see anyway. I have scanned my computer with VirusBarrier X6 with an uptodate definition list and it does not find anything. My console report during this time interval looks as follows... with the mail line at the end of the sequence when I reopened "Mail"  Â

At first (all of a sudden out of the blue) I could not enter Time Machine mode for love or money despite clicking on the enter time machine action botton, however I could run a 'backup now' at any point and this appeared to go through as well as the hourly automated ones. Then switching Off then back On Time Machine suddenly allowed me to enter Time Machine; however I am only able to access the finder windows for any local 'white tick' backups which in my case were only for the last several snapshot backups for today... but if I try and access any dates after this right back until November 2011 last year, nothing happens at all and the date/backup markers are completely unaccessible. Incidently, all of these previous 'purple tick' date markers (time machine backups/snapshots on external firewire 800 drive) were accessible before, but know they can't be accessed even though they corecctly index the appropriate dates right back until November.
I'ts worth pointing out that I've had many glitces and random problems since using a Thunderbolt Display which is where the external hard-drive containing the time machine backup is hooked up to. A seperate recent issue is constantly losing sound on the Thunderbolt Display which requires a reboot to get it back temporarily, but this is a seperate issue but may be related if the cause of a number of problems may be originating from the TD.
The external disk drive containing the time machine backup image, appears to be online ok as I'm able to access the drive in a normal manner. Has some kind of special links nature or association relasionship between the Time Machine program and the external drive and backup disk image contained on it been disrupted or broken? If this is the case, can they be re-linked or re-associated?

I have this nagging problem for a while, all the "date modified" in most of my folders (application, documents, utility, libraries, download, etc.) are wrong. They all show up with january dates, some this year, some previous years. Recent modifications are noted as "today" and "yesterday", beyond that I get january dates. My date and hour preferences are set ok. Repaired permissions quite a few times, nothing changed. Waited for few system updates (10.7.3 - 10.7.2 - 10.7.1) hoping it would correct itself, but no.

I've done a lot of research about the older USB iSub (which I have) not working with Snow Leopard and Intel Macs (which I also have). I tried the iMic work-around, but it did not work for me. Any tips? Maybe I'm missing a step...
So anyway, the newer iSub as paired with the HK Soundsticks works fine w/Intel Macs since it uses the industry standard 3.5mm mini-jack.
I was wondering if anyone has considered converting the guts of the older USB iSub to use the 3.5mm mini-jack instead?
I have a crappy speaker/subwoofer combo that uses the 3.5mm mini-jack where the subwoofer volume is controlled at one of the speakers. It looks pretty easy to pull the guts from the crappy subwoofer and see if it will drive the iSub. A bit of a kludge I admit, but it's possible w/o permanent damage to the iSub.
Can anyone tell me or post a pic of how all the wires connect between computer/iSub/satellite speakers on the newer HK Soundsticks?

My Wireless Mighty mouse is an amazing mouse. Paid $79 dollars for it, so I wasn't going to let it die when the ball got all torn up after it's long term use.I didn't feel like cracking open my no longer used wired mouse to confiscate it's ball, so I looked for another solution. I found this small metal marble, the same size as the mighty mouses ball. I put it inside, put the mouse back together, and now I have a unique, working mouse. I posted some pictures, as I felt it looked cool, and thought I would share the idea with others.

for some reason steve jobs used my email address as the name for my home folder. unfortunately, this is not ideal. i looked it up and there is a way to change it: [URL] but it doesn't seem updated for 10.6. Also one of the steps is to just rename your home folder which it will not allow me to do.

can you change the opening location of a folder?
When I open up any of my folders from my desktop (Macintosh HD, My Documents) the folder is on the far right of the screen with about a quarter of it off the screen. It gets annoying to have to drag it onto the screen every time, then as soon as I quit and open it back up, it's back in that spot.

is there anyway to change this so I can manually drag files to where I want them?

I am trying to change the background on some Aliases and folders I created on my desktop. I downloaded some icons in .ico and .png format online, and I am able to use the .png format. I open up the .png file, ctrl-c it, then goto the Alias or Folder I want to change the icon on. I do a "Get Info", then I click on the icon at the top and do a ctrl-v. This changes the icon, but it puts a White background behind the icon. See the screenshot below to see what I am talking about. Screenshot of resulting icon on desktop. Anyways, so when you go to change your background. You have all these options to choose from folder wise. Well I remember clearly, very very clearly back in Tiger that you could create a folder, or just an existing folder within say "Photos" and you could click it and it would access that folder and all its pictures. Mainly for changing the pictures every 5/10/30/day w/e I like my background to change often. Many pictures.
Well I have had leopard for a while. I forgot when I installed it. But I have noticed ever since then that when I try and change my background. It only lets me use photos that are inside the original Photo folder. There are no folders present inside the photo folder in the Background change area. Only pictures are present. This is a huge issue due to how I like to have things organized.
