Mac Pro :: OS X Mavericks (10.9.4) Unable To Install Mountain Lion (10.8.5) - No Entry Sign
Aug 23, 2014
I just received my new Mac pro at work and is trying to install Mountain Lion as the OS instead of Mavericks but it seems impossible. Every time I try to boot up on a bootable 10.8 installation drive I get the no entry sign. I even cloned my old MacPro and tried to boot from the external drive, I still get the no entry sign.Â
I tried booting from a thunderbolt, USB and even super drive, with no luck.Â
I need to install 10.8 because Mavericks doesn't work with Active Directory in my company, it just hangs the system every time, we've tried many different ways to fix this but it just seems to get worst.Â
Any way I can downgrade a 2013 Mac Pro to 10.8?Â

I have an old MacBook (not sure how old - it was a handed down to me by a friend). It was working fine until this past week. I downloaded a Yosemite update and One Drive and now it won't start!Â
Basically, when I power up it displays a 'No Entry' sign, spends around 20 minutes on the Apple logo and the 'creeping' progress bar, and then when it gets to the end opens OS X Utilities. I am trying to get in contact with Apple Support but I cannot do this without the serial number, which I cannot seem to locate in OS X Utility.Â

I have checked Software Update, and there was two updates. First one was Java and the other one was EFI Update 2.7. I don't remember the Java update version. After I applied the update, the MBP rebooted itself as it should do; but the problem occurred at that reboot. OSX tried to start up three times, like as it was failing to install the updates after reboot. And at the fourth time, after a few minutes the Apple logo turned into a "No Entry Sign".
And it stuck like that. Now, the MBP cannot boot normally, I can only run it on safe mode. I have reset PRAM. As far as I read about the issue over the boards, the problem occurs to be an HDD problem. Yet I can run the OSX in safe mode, which bugs me. So I downloaded SMART Utility to check the HDD. It says there is 1 Pending Bad Sector, and 1 Removed Bad Sector.

Ok lately My Mac OS X has crashed on me and I am now stuck on my windows bootcamp partition.
My CD drive is broken so I bought a new external combo drive which works fine! When i go to boot the cd It loads up fine on the alt/option screen however when it goes to the loading the cd (the apple sign) it stays there for a couple of minutes (no loading wheel) and then turns into a prohibition sign!My mac drive before this was formatted as it was faulty however it is still of the MAC format! (HSF or something)

Were is the 4GB file after the download is complete? ALSO, if I reapply the download to that machine to reset or fix corrupted system files, etc., is the downloaded install image gone afterward? In other words, does the install "clean up" and remove the downloaded install bits?Â

My father try to install the OS onto a newly installed internal drive on his Mac Pro. He's trying to install Mountain Lion, which is the same OS X generation as his usual boot drive (which is remaining in the system—the new drive is getting an OS as a backup boot drive).Â
The problem is that the Mountain Lion installer, downloaded from the App Store, refuses to install on the new drive. The drive, which is formatted but otherwise empty, does not appear as an available drive to install on.Â
My father believes that this is related to the note in the System Requirements saying that the Mac being installed on must already have Snow Leopard or Lion installed on it. I'm not so sure, but it's a valid question: can Mountain Lion be installed only as an upgrade, requiring an existing OS install on the actual drive being installed to?Â
My interpretation of the listed requirement is that you have to boot from Snow Leopard or later to do the install, because the installer has to contact the App Store, but the requirement is worded ambiguously enough that it could mean that the drive itself must have Snow Leopard or later on it. It doesn't make sense to me, though, for this installer to be useable only as an upgrade; there are numerous situations under which a person might need to install an OS on an empty drive.Â

I just setup a Seagate external drive to become my offsite backup. I am a new iMac user. I dragged and dropped my most important folders (using Finder) onto the Seagate drive (to copy them over) but probably I did something incorrectly because the Document folder which has all my important files disappeared from under Favorites in Finder and did not show up on the Seagate. I can no longer access what I need as there is no easy way to locate my files which were grouped in a multi level, nicely organized file structure under Documents, to make it easy for me to locate my work. Â
Now, Finder shows under Favorites: All My Files, Airdrop, Applications, Desktop, Downloads, Logins. Previously it also had an entry for Documents, now missing. Using All My Files I can locate the files I worked on yesterday, so they are still on the hard drive.Â

My son's school wipes the hard drive of their computers every year when they upgrade. I made a copy of my son's entire hard drive (10.8) before turning the MacBook Pro in to be "updated" (wiped and everything replaced with 10.9.4). Now my son has told me he made Notes he needs. what files do I need to replace from the backed up version of his system? I need to know how to locate the old files that I can not access by holding the option and going to the library etc because the old system files are on an external hard drive, not an active older mac.Â
I assume there is more than one file. We have not made any new Notes, so I'm OK to completely overwrite the new notes files with the ones from the older version. if there is any way to simply open the notes so I can copy and paste into Word, that would be fine too.Â

I'm trying to dual boot my Macbook Pro (2010) with Windows 7 to run some software that is not Mac compatible. I have encountered one problem after the next, but most recently, my disc drive has stopped reading discs. I had originally gone from Mountain Lion to Mavericks as an upgrade, and my disc drive worked fine - but due to an issue with the Windows 7 installation, I had to completely wipe my computer and start fresh - booting Mavericks from the Cloud directly. This appears to have knocked out my disc drive and try as I might, my computer will not only refuse to read external optical drives, but it will accept discs, not read them, and repeatedly spit them out a few seconds later. Â
I was looking for a solution - and I'm not sure exactly which route to take. I could downgrade to Mountain Lion and hopefully restore the functionality of my disc drive to install Windows 7 and upgrade my OS after the fact OR I could find a way to repair my disc drive. The issue is most definitely software and not hardware. Â
Ideally, I'll walk away from this with a partitioned MacBook Pro with both Windows 7 and Mavericks installed. I don't even necessarily need my disc drive to work once Windows 7 is installed. Â

I'm trying to boot up my late 2013 15" MBP (shipped with Mavericks) using an external startup disk running Mountain Lion. I really need to use the FCP iChat Theater feature, as I need to do some long distance editing. The startup disk works just fine, I checked it on another computer, but when I restart my Mavericks mac and choose it as the boot drive, I just get a grey screen with the universal "no"symbol (circle with a slash through it).

how to prepare for a "clean install" of Mountain Lion when it comes out. However, it's clean in theory because I want to be able to have my personal files and programs ready for ML but I am afraid for any left-overs from deleted apps since I tend to install & uninstall them for test drive purposes.

I recently returned from a weekend long trip. My mom had used my Mac Book Pro (December 2012) on the guest account. When I opened it on Monday it was unresponsive, and the screen only showed the dock. I rebooted, but the result was a white screen with a flashing folder with a question mark. I followed instructions on the forums, and used command r. Now I am stuck. I didn't back it up with time machine, so that option (Of the 4) is out of the question. I'm using the safari one now. I can't modify or delete my disks for the Disk Utility Option, and am unable to select a disk to reinstall Mountain Lion on. Long story short, I seems my computer is having problems with the disk.

I have a Macbook Pro Retina which cam with Mountain Lion installed, and I want to upgrade to Mavericks. However, I have a need to run some apps in Mountain Lion, as official support for those apps will not go past 10.8.5 (Avid's Pro Tools 10) and I need to be able to open archived projects.Â
I also wish to clean install both operating systems fresh, and do a stripped ML partition, with bare bones essentials, on the smallest partion possible. Mavericks will be the main system, and ML won't host user data, only the legacy apps. I am fine with erasing my 500GB SSD.Â
My current process is to install ML from the recovery partition, and use disk utility to partition before I do, then install Mavericks from a bootable USB (already made).Â
So my questions are these:Â
For ML:Â
1. What size partition is the minimum necessary to install ML, plus the apps and run without hitch? The legacy apps will take maybe 4GB.I want this as small as possible.Â
2. When I do a fresh install of ML, what apps can safely be deleted without affecting the system?Â
For Mavericks:Â
When migrating my old user account to Mavericks, I don't wish to migrate the apps, just the user settings and the data. I will make an entire backup of the user directory on a separate drive before I start this process, as well as a Time Machine backup. I then plan to migrate the account settings and data, but manually reinstall the extra apps. The reason for this is I have a lot of third party apps, and some are trials I decided to uninstall, and they all leave junk behind.Â
3. If I import the user account settings and data only, what cruft or orphaned files should I be aware of?Â
4. Are there options to cherry pick the settings that are migrated?Â
5. If I manually copy, for example, the mail folder, iCal or messages folder in my user library, and place it into the appropriate user folder in the new account in a worst case scenario, will there be any drama I should be aware of?Â
Lastly, a question of Apple ID's/iCloud:Â
6. Before doing this process, should I deauthorise my iTunes account, or will that be fine when migrated anyway?Â
7. What will happen with my iPhone when I sync to a fresh install on mavericks, will it attempt to wipe my iPhone, or is that part of the user data that is migrated?Â

I'm one of the unlucky owners of Macbook Retina 15" Mid 2012. I was very satisfied with this computer, everything was great, untill I installed OS X Mavericks. My computer started to have GPU Panics all the time under some "heavier" usage like watching long videos on YouTube. I googled this problem and then I saw that I wasn't the only one, many people had problems after upgrading to Mavericks. I also read that downgrading to Mountain Lion solves the problem, but after the Internet Recovery update, when you are restoring your mac, it restores as Mavericks. I read Apple instruction how to revert os x, but it requires Time Machine backup from Mountain Lion, I already downloaded ML Installer from AppStore but I don't know how to install it.Â
