MacBook Air :: Delete Apps From Interface / Cannot Drag Them To Trash Can
Aug 23, 2014
I've never really felt the need to delete apps from this interface, but there are a bunch showing up I do not recall installing. They are not listed in the Applications folder. I cannot drag them to the trash can, and no 'x' pops up in the corner when I get the icons wiggling. I found some command on some website for deleting things through terminal but I tried it and it did not work (some error about "too many options"). Again I repeat there is no 'x' on the app icons and there is no way to make it appear.

I'm pretty new to Mac (4 months)..having finally come from the "dark side". My question is: when you install software (OS X 10.6) does it send files all over the place like Windoze does? And, to uninstall something, is all you do is right-click and "send to trash"? Will that delete any and all files associated with that app?

this seems like a really simple thing i want to do but i cant seem to figure it out. All i'm trying to do is put a shortcut of the trash can onto the desktop. I have my dock hidden and it can be a pain to try and make it appear to delete something. i searched spotlight for trash and there are no hits. i try to drag the trashcan from the dock and nothing happens. There has to be a solution???

How do you delete individual items from Trash without emptying entire Trash? If I highlight one item in Trash, the only option is the Empty button. I'm afraid it will empty the whole thing. I don't want to do that.

Since reinstalling my Lion, the Trash has been strange. I can't just drag stuff there without getting a dialogue box telling me it will be deleted immediately. That requires me to click my agreement. Same thing happens if I right-click my mouse and choose the Trash option. So my Trash basket stays empty, and I go through a two-step process with every file or program I want to be rid of.

For the last couple of days, I haven't been able to drag any files over from my Stacks to the Trash; nothing happens. I'm forced to open the folder and drag it over from there or Apple+Delete it. I *might* have accidentally deleted a file (I don't remember which) causing this to suddenly happen and haven't been able to figure out how to fix it. It's more of an annoyance than anything else.

In an attempt to delete duplicate files from my iTunes folder, I accidentally deleted the entire contents of the folder into the Trash. I have NOT emptied the trash. I can open the trash can and see all of my files there.
Here's the problem: I click on the files (one or multiple) and try to drag them to another location. They won't drag. I've tried several times.

I downloaded a beta test recently, now it's finished I have the folder sitting in my Applications folder, but it won't let me drag it out into the trash. I've logged in as an Administrator, changed my regular ID to have Admin status, none of it works. I've got the CCleaner app from the App Store, same issue. It tells me I need to be an Admin to uninstall files, but even when I log in as the Admin, it gives me the same message.

Apple Support Communities On my MBP on Mac OS X Lion, I have problems when I am installing apps. When I drag the app from the dmg file to my Apps folder, and when I open it, the app just jumps up and down on the dock.
When I force quit it, it does not go away, so I have to use Activity Moniter to quit the dock and when I open the app then, it works fine. reasons and solutions for this problem?

up until a few days ago...maybe after 9.0.3 update...on my macbook pro under snow leopard, im certain i could drag files from itunes library or a playlist into the trash.
if i drug the file from the library to the trash, you would here the trash can "eating sound" and it would be gone from the library (one step). if it was from a playlist, it would delete that file from the playlist but not from the library as expected. now, i cant do either. now i have to right click and delete the file/s and then click move to trash.

I dual boot my iMac using Boot Camp and I'm having problems deleting a bunch of files in my Trash. A short history. I purchased a OWC external hard drive case and I've been going through my old hard drives which originally were used in my Windows XP computer. The drives were contaminated with Windows viruses and so I installed the drives one by one in the OWC case and proceeded to delete files and programs which I didn't need in each drive while in OS X and keeping the files I wanted to save in each respective drive. Now what I'm faced with is a Trash bin filled with Windows XP software (including Windows XP itself) which I cannot delete because OS X says I don't have permission to delete those files.

I have a late 2012 Macbook Pro version 10.9.3.
Attached to this are two external hard drives: Both are SeaGate, USB 3.0, 3TB, and are formatted to the ExFAT system.
I use these mainly for purposes associated with my job as an wedding video editor.
About a month ago, I received a few files from a client that they wanted to attach to their video and upon editing them I tried to delete the originals but was unable to as I got this message: "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items". However, all other trash that I put in there is deleted when I secure delete so I'm sure it's not a problem with the system but rather with those files.
I have researched the problem online and have found some suggested solutions:
1. That I need to change the permission on the file in order to delete it. When I checked the file information it reported that I was able to "Read and Write" as with every other file.
2. I attempted the following suggestion that I found on another forum: Advanced tip about deleting locked filesIf there are several locked files in the Trash, you can unlock them all at the same time at the command line. Follow these steps:Open Terminal. It's located in /Applications/Utilities.Type: chflags -R nouchg Note: Type one space (not pictured) after nouchg in the line above, so that it ends in "nouchg ". Do not press Return yet.Double-click the Trash icon in the Dock to reveal the contents of the Trash. If necessary, arrange the Finder window so that a portion of the Terminal window is still visible.Press the Command-A key combination to select all files in the Trash.Drag the files from the Trash to the Terminal window. Note: This automatically enters the pathname for each file. This eliminates the need to individually empty multiple Trash directories, particularly when multiple disks or volumes are present.Press Return. No special text message will be shown indicating that the command was successful.Empty the Trash.
This did not work either as when I attempted to delete the same message appeared.
So my question is this, how do I permanently delete these files? Do I need to buy third party software to do this?

I want to delete backup files that are more than a year old from my time machine. I moved them to trash and although it then asks if I want to remove secure items and I check yes, it then stops. As a result I can't securely delete any new files either since each time the same thing happens if I add a new file, none of it deletes.
