OS X Mavericks :: (10.9) DVD Sharing As Device Won't Work

Sep 1, 2014

I am trying to share a DVD drive over my LAN. We have three computers.

I have an iMac, with DVD drive sharing enabled, without the requirement of asking me for permission.

I also have a MBP, with the same DVD sharing enabled, and a Mac Pro, again with the same settings (it has no DVD drive).

The iMac can see a disk in the MBP's drive and the drive is listed in devices.

But the MBP cannot see the disk in the iMac's drive, and nothing is listed in devices. Nor can the MP see the iMacs DVD device, and it can't see a disk in the MBP's drive.

So out of three, only the iMac can see DVD drives as devices.

Note that if on the MBP I mount a disk, and then access the MBP computer I can mount that volume. But it still doesn't show as a device, which is how it should work.

I have done all the usual stuff. All other network access is fine. No firewall issues. All on the same LAN, working over ethernet.

OS X Mavericks :: Another Device On Network Is Using IP Address

Sep 8, 2014

a macbook air and an iMac have both give the error "Another device on the network is using your IP address". They are both using the latest OSX and are both set to use DHCP assigned by my Virgin cable router.the address reported in the popup window is NOT the address that either computer was assigned at the time (the first time, I thought it was odd, and I had an iPad handy and used fing to search my network to see what device had just used that address and I didn't see anything). This time - I was on my iMac and happen to have a terminal open, so I did a quick if config - and my ip address was not the one indicated in the message (it was saying 192.168.0.8) and my address was 192.168.0.12. In fact I think that the other day it was complaining about the same .0.8 address.

I do have 2 devices that have a hard coded ip-address (but they are right at the beginning of the range, and in fact I have instructed the router to skip those addresses and just dish out ip's from .0.3 onwards). All other devices use DHCP.

Hardware :: Won't Work With External Firewire Audio Device

Jun 25, 2009

Yesterday I took delivery of the following kit- http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/produc...firewire-.html

As you can see, it comes with the FCA202 Audio interface - http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/produc...io-fca202.html

I opted for the FireWire package as it has the most better quality mics. I got it all hooked up, but for some reason, my Mac is not recognising my new sound device at all. I was looking under the Sound part of the Control Panel, but nothing new would register. I checked the FireWire part of the Device Manager (appologies I forget the actual name of the application). The Firewire device was listed as "Unknown", if I was to remove the device and refresh, it would show nothing. So i've got the feeling that its been seen, just not recognised correctly.

I tried a few things to try and help my situation.

1) Disconnecting any other attached device
2) Rebooting several times
3) Leaving system off and unplugged for 10-15 mins
4) Updating all software
5) Resetting my xxxx (I forget the term, but it involved rebooting holding CMD, Option, R and P) - can someone confirm how I know if this was actually reset?
6) Going into Activity Manager and confirming the Audio driver is loaded

From what I've read, Firewire config issues can be common with Macs. I am running an 18 month olf iMac 20" with 4 gig ram. I've not used my FireWire port for a while, about 6 months ago I used a FW external HD which didn't have any problems with. Alas I don't have any other FW devices to plug in and test the port. The final thing I'm going for is to leave the system unplugged for 10 hours, which will be ready to check after work.

One thing I was thinking about though - would getting a powered FW hub be of use at all?

OS X :: Can't Get Printer Sharing To Work

May 17, 2008

I have an iMac (2gh Intel Core Duo) which I connect via USB to my printer (HP PSC 1500) when I go to print like this everything works fine. The problem is when I go to print from my MacBook Pro (2.4gh Intel Core 2 Due) wirelessly via my home network. I have turned on printer sharing on both machines and have the printer drivers installed on both as well.

When I got to print, I get the printer queue window open. It looks as though its trying to print and then I get this error message Fatal: opening printer connection failed, unable to open the printer connection, please check the printer connection and check the printer for errors

The status of the printer then goes back to ready but nothing has printed.

Both machines are connected wirelessly to an AirPort Extreme Base Station.

ITunes :: How To Get Home Sharing To Work

Sep 22, 2009

Home Sharing sounds simple enough. Has anyone got this to work? I have searched for documentation on how to set this up and Apple has only made a video mentioning how to do this. It is vague though and doesn't explain the context for set up.
http://www.apple.com/itunes/how-to/#video-started

For example. Does Home Sharing only work with one account? What if I have an iTunes account and my Wife has an account, does one of us lose all of our content when we share? You are supposed to be able to transfer content among all local shares. What happens next? Do I need to authorize each file to work on another computer/iPhone/Touch? I have not gone all the way with setting up Home Sharing as I don't want to go down a long path and be stuck at the end.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: How To Get Screen Sharing To Work Again

May 16, 2012

I have a mac mini server running OSX Lion 10.7.4  Until powring this down over the weekend, it had worked beautifully.  I coould connect, access shared files, screen share (as I am running in head less) as well as access it via Server Admin from a remote computer.

After restarting, I can still share files, but am unable to access the sceen share or administer remotely.  The odd thing is that when I connect it to my TV I can then also access it with screen share from another MacBook Pro as well as use server admin for remote admin.  As soon as I run it headless again, I cannot access it via screen share.

I have noticed that the screen share finction has changed from before, so am wondering if this has anything to do with it.

I have not chnaged any settings on it.  Firewall is the same as before, filesharing and screen sharing is enabled and I am trying to access it as a registered user.

OS X Mavericks :: Won't Sleep At All With File Sharing?

If I have file sharing turned on on my macbook pro retina (late 2013 model) I cannot put it to sleep at all. The manual sleep option from the apple menu does nothing apart from dimming the display. The computer stays on. This is plainly a bug.

Steps to reproduce:

turn on network file sharing.

have a client connect to your mac (he does not need to stay actively connected and using filesystem at the moment of sleep attempt).

Then choose sleep from the apple menu

result: no sleep.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Sharing A Mac Printer To Windows 7 Via LPR Does Not Work

Apr 6, 2012

I had read an article explaining how to configure a Windows 7 PC to print to a shared Mac printer (in Snow Leopard, but I assume it's the same in Lion).

So I shared the printer (an IP printer) on my Mac, then followed the instructions to add LPR Printing to Windows 7. I went to 127.0.0.1:631 and saw the CUPS page on my Mac, and the setup the LPR port on Windows 7 with the IP address of my Mac and the Queue name listed for the shared printer in CUPS.  Unfortunately, when I enter the port info and click OK, it comes back with the error page listed in the article.

I've tried this on two different iMac's (a new 27" and a much older iMac with Snow Leopard).  I also used three different Windows laptops (Windows 7 and Vista), and all three gave the same error. Basically, when I setup the LPR port, it cannot "talk" and confirm the settings with the Mac.

I've turned off Windows Firewall, tried basically everything I can think of (and I'm a tech, so I've tried a lot!).  Anyone successfully printed to a shared Mac printer from a Windows 7/Vista PC?

OS X Mavericks :: Sharing / Synchronizing Calendars Not Working

Jun 20, 2014

I bought a MacBook Pro for my wife yesterday and want to share calendars on my MacMini so that we avoid ":double-booking", which seems to happen all too frequently.  Both machines are running OS 10.9.3, are signed into the same Apple ID and are — think — connected iCloud.  The address books seem to have been shared.  Internet connection is fine.  But I cannot get the calendar up on the new computer.  I have no problem  with iPhone and iPad.  So, obviously, I am doing something, and probably something very basic, incorrectly.  But what???

OS X Mavericks :: File Sharing Name Has A -1 Appended To The Share

Aug 21, 2014

I had an end user create a shared folder on a new server. He did this incorrectly, and I had to fix the sharing permissions, folder location, etc. When I moved the shared folder, it seemed to have caused an issue with the list of available shares, and when connecting to the shared folder it now is appended with a -1 (SHARE-1). I believe this is because the preference file for the shared folders still has the legacy folder listed or there is a legacy cache somewhere that I can't find.

I've cleared DNS cache, used Onyx to clear out all other caches, I've removed AFPconfig and afp files in etc, I've removed the share and restarted the server and set up the share again, manually unloaded and relaunched com.apple.applefileshare.plist. Probably even more stuff I've done but can't remember. I can't get rid of that pesky -1 on the end of the share name.

way to get rid of the cache for AFP file shares?

OS X :: Windows 7 And Snow Leopard File Sharing - Can't Get It To Work

Oct 3, 2009

Things used to be simple with Leopard and XP, with the network browser working seamlessly like magic, detecting the XP within few seconds after it connected. But that's no longer the case. Since I upgraded XP to 7, automatic detection of the Mac side was going on and off, and folder access was also on and off, somewhat unreliable. Then I upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard, the automatic detection is completely gone, complete reliance on cmd+k now, and something strange happened . . .

I've figured out how to share Mac files with Windows, and it is working properly on the Windows side. The problem is the other way round, where I can get only some Windows folders shared and not some others. The settings are exactly the same, and that brings me to a dead end.

OS X Mavericks :: How To Prevent MacBook Air From Sleeping When Sharing Files Over SMB

Jun 2, 2014

I know that Mavericks is very aggressive when it comes to saving power,To transfer files from an old win7 laptop to a brand new MacBook Air, I set up file sharing on the MBA, and shared a folder over SMB. I then proceed to log on from the win7 machine, and start copying files, but as soon as the MBA's display dims (at which time I assume Mavericks sleeps) the file transfer is halted. Other than permanently setting the MBA to "always awake", is there a way of preventing it from sleeping when external file transfers are taking place?
