OS X V10.7 Lion :: Sharing A Mac Printer To Windows 7 Via LPR Does Not Work
Apr 6, 2012
I had read an article explaining how to configure a Windows 7 PC to print to a shared Mac printer (in Snow Leopard, but I assume it's the same in Lion).Â
So I shared the printer (an IP printer) on my Mac, then followed the instructions to add LPR Printing to Windows 7. I went to 127.0.0.1:631 and saw the CUPS page on my Mac, and the setup the LPR port on Windows 7 with the IP address of my Mac and the Queue name listed for the shared printer in CUPS. Unfortunately, when I enter the port info and click OK, it comes back with the error page listed in the article.Â
I've tried this on two different iMac's (a new 27" and a much older iMac with Snow Leopard). I also used three different Windows laptops (Windows 7 and Vista), and all three gave the same error. Basically, when I setup the LPR port, it cannot "talk" and confirm the settings with the Mac.Â
I've turned off Windows Firewall, tried basically everything I can think of (and I'm a tech, so I've tried a lot!). Anyone successfully printed to a shared Mac printer from a Windows 7/Vista PC? Â

'all of a sudden' (so it seems) my 2 printers in my network do not print printjobs from other macs in my network. It dit work. Nothing really changed, exept some system-updates.
print-share is on, awake out of sleep is on (network-tab). Really there is no reason that it would not work. Still, ... it doesn't.Â
config:
- imac 27" 2011, software updated
- macmini 2010, software updated
canon ip4200, works standard on imac. brother HL-2030, works standard on imacÂ
The charm of the set-up was that I could have my printers in the office and still print from the livingroom (mac mini)Â Â To try to solve the problem I moved the mac mini temporarily to the office, so I have it next to the imac.
Opening the section 'printers and scanners' and then pressing the '+' does however give me 2 differentviews:
- on the imac I get a sub menu, dropping down from the '+'
- on the mac mini I get a new window named 'add new printer' (this is hopefully the right translation - I am on a Dutch system)
This strikes me as odd. I never noticed this before. Maybe this is where the problem lies?Â

I have an iMac (2gh Intel Core Duo) which I connect via USB to my printer (HP PSC 1500) when I go to print like this everything works fine. The problem is when I go to print from my MacBook Pro (2.4gh Intel Core 2 Due) wirelessly via my home network. I have turned on printer sharing on both machines and have the printer drivers installed on both as well.
When I got to print, I get the printer queue window open. It looks as though its trying to print and then I get this error message Fatal: opening printer connection failed, unable to open the printer connection, please check the printer connection and check the printer for errors
The status of the printer then goes back to ready but nothing has printed.
Both machines are connected wirelessly to an AirPort Extreme Base Station.

We have 2 computers over here, one uses Windows Vista, the other is an iMac with OS X Snow Leopard. They're both connected to a hub, said hub is connected to the modem. The Windows machine has 2 printers connected to it, an HP DeskJet and an Epson Stylus.
Now, I would like to access one of those 2 printers from within OS X, so I can actually print without moving files between both computers through an USB stick or whatever. I've put both printers in Windows Vista on "Shared", but I can't seem to find them anywhere in OS X. So I guess I'm doing something massively wrong.
Below is a chart of how this "network" looks like.
So, is it possible like this to get access to the printers on the Vista machine from within OS X? If so, how do I properly set it up?

I am attempting to connect my Dell AIO Photo 926 printer to my wireless network (WPA2). I use an old Apple AirPort Extreme (hereinafter "AAE") as my router (it's the old "dome shaped" one). I believe that heoretically I could plug the printer into the USB port on the back of the AAE and any computer connected to that network can print to the Dell printer. I have installed the drivers for the Dell AIO Printer and it prints fine when connected to my laptop (Windows 7). However, I am having NO luck doing this when I go to Control Panel and run the "add a printer wizard." Is there anyone who might be able to point me in the right direction to a tutorial or something? Is what I'm trying to do even possible with an AAE and an "older" Dell printer?

I have two printers connected to my iMac (10.7.3) and I am trying to enable printer sharing for my MacBook Air to utilize the iMac's printers. On the iMac, I go to System Prefrences > Sharing and check Printer Sharing and I ensure that both printers are being shared. Everything is checked, but the second I close the System Prefrences window, the printer sharing stops working. I go back into System Prefrences and the Printer Sharing box is unchecked.

Things used to be simple with Leopard and XP, with the network browser working seamlessly like magic, detecting the XP within few seconds after it connected. But that's no longer the case. Since I upgraded XP to 7, automatic detection of the Mac side was going on and off, and folder access was also on and off, somewhat unreliable. Then I upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard, the automatic detection is completely gone, complete reliance on cmd+k now, and something strange happened . . .
I've figured out how to share Mac files with Windows, and it is working properly on the Windows side. The problem is the other way round, where I can get only some Windows folders shared and not some others. The settings are exactly the same, and that brings me to a dead end.

I have a mac mini server running OSX Lion 10.7.4 Until powring this down over the weekend, it had worked beautifully. I coould connect, access shared files, screen share (as I am running in head less) as well as access it via Server Admin from a remote computer.Â
After restarting, I can still share files, but am unable to access the sceen share or administer remotely. The odd thing is that when I connect it to my TV I can then also access it with screen share from another MacBook Pro as well as use server admin for remote admin. As soon as I run it headless again, I cannot access it via screen share.Â
I have noticed that the screen share finction has changed from before, so am wondering if this has anything to do with it.Â
I have not chnaged any settings on it. Firewall is the same as before, filesharing and screen sharing is enabled and I am trying to access it as a registered user.Â

After updating my new iMac to 10.7.4. My internet sharing suddenly doesn't work any more. I connect my ipad and iphone via the wifi. It will drop out after a very short time, about 10 seconds of Facetime, so I turn off the wifi, then the internet sharing then reboot everything but nothing seems to work. It worked perfectly in 10.7.3 but now I can't use the internet on my ipad.

At the moment I have my iTunes on my Windows 7 PC but as I a have just got a Macbook Pro (with Lion) I would like to be able to share iTunes between them without both having to be turned on as at present.Â
I have a copy of iTunes on my ReadyNAS Duo which works ok for my WDTV Live to my TV but does not give me the full selection of views ie no Grid View or Cover Flow View. Â
I was thinking about putting my iTunes onto my Time Capsule, which I belive my Macbook Pro should see ok via WiFi, would my Windows 7 PC be able to access the Time Capsule to share the iTunes content, as it is connected to the Time Capsule via ethernet (for Internet connection to my cable modem)Â
Is there a better way of doing thisÂ
I realise that using the Time Capsule for iTunes means it would not be backed up but i already have copies of iTunes

I recently upgraded to Lion (desktop not server) and now my HDD sharing with Windows 7 is not working like it used to. If I boot back in to Snow Leopard (diferent HDD) it's all working fine. My windows 7 PCs can access my shared Mac Pro RAID no problem. If I boot in to Lion they can 'sometimes' connect but mostly not. To get them to connect I seem to have to use the IP address instead of the system name (\MACPROLIONRaid) like I used to with SL.Nothing changed on the Windows 7 system at all, other than now I get the infuriating dialog tellmy my password is incorrect. Some unknown sequence of rebooting one or both machines, sometimes multiple times, will let me access the mac, but I have no idea what's going on here.Â

I want some files to be shared such as photoshop illustrator and premiere pro from both pc's and mac. Lastly I want to use time machine. Am I asking too much? The wife refuses to learn mac at this time. Maybe in the future then I can turn the pc's into a boat anchor.

I just installed Lion 10.7.4 named my computer "fx6800". Then I joined my Windows 2003 Server domain with no problems. After that I could not log on to domain with one of my windows 7 machines because it had the same computer ID. Ok no problem I re joined the domain and re binded with the Win 7 machine and then un binded my Mac Lion machine then re-binded with a different computer ID. No problem both machines can log on to AD with separate computer accounts. Then I notice when I opened terminal it was showing the old computer ID. No problem I fixed it With sudo scutil --set HostName "new host name". Â
Then when I go to select file sharing in the description to the right under File Sharing On: it shows the path to tha machine is fx6800.domainname.local which is the original computer ID. Also when I select remote login and I believe it shows username@fx6800.domainname.local. I have searched for 2 days and have not come up with anything. I am sure if I reinstall everything it should fix it but I would like to save the time.

I spent several hours trying to get this working. I had managed to make it work like a charm last year but I had to format my mac and I lost my printers... so here we go again.Â
Office setting (I am at University, that's why we all go out with out own public IPs): Â
- windows XP computer connecting directly to the internet with its own IP address, we shall say 123.456.789.0
A HP laserjet 4100 printer connected to the windows XP computer, called Printer2Â
- airport extreme connecting directly to the internet with its own IP address, we shall say 098.765.432.1Â
- macbook connected to airport. Note that this way macbook and windows are not in the same workgroup.Â
I made the windows xp share the printer and I added some exceptions to the firewall so that it would accept incoming printing jobs from the airport's IP 098.765.432.1. I downloaded the Laserjet drivers on the mac.Â
And then, I tried every possible configuration to add the printer. IPP, LPD, Socket, SMB...
I tried putting as a queue just Printer2, I tried putting /printers/Printer2.. I even tried things like username:password@123.456.789.0:port... nothing worked. I just cannot manage to print, and I actually cannot even make the mac recognize the printer.Â
I remember I once found out what the problem was... but that was long ago and I forgot about it..It even kept working as I switched from an old access point to the airport..

Got my first iMac 21.5" yesterday. Been a PC user since I was born (16 years heh), saved up money from work and made one of the best purchases ever. Alongside my iPhone 4.
Anway. My iMac (Running 10.6.5) is connected via ethernet to my router.
My Vista PC is connected to the router, via ethernet.
The Kodak ESP 5 printer is connected to the Vista PC via USB.
I'm trying to get access to the printer from my iMac. The PC and printer are both on.
I've enabled LPD on Windows Vista.
On my iMac if I attempt to add a printer through 'Windows' in the first column there are two names 'home' and 'workgroup'. These appared after enabling LPD. Sadly, when clicked no printers appear.

I am relatively new to Mac OS X. I am running Leopard, and I want to share a printer over IP. The printer is connected to my office's iMac, and I want to be able to print from my notebook as well (MacBook Pro). The problem is that my notebook connects to the wireless internet at work, and therefore it is not in the same LAN as the desktop. So I would like to share the printer over the internet.
I have already enabled "Printer Sharing" in the iMac (which has the printer hooked to it). I know the IP address of the iMac, and I have been trying to add an IP printer in the MacBook Pro using that address, but so far I have not been able to do it.

I've got 3 G5 iMacs, one with a USB printer attached. I can share the printer and add it on the other iMacs and print to it no problem, but when I restart them the printer is no longer in the list and I have to add it again.
This is becoming a pain, and with the old eMacs I had never had this problem. They are all on 10.4.11, am I doing something wrong?

I have my cool new mac here and it's got a great printer connected to it via usb. My mac is accessing internet via an ethernet cable, awesome! I have internet AND can print on my mac. now we got the old family PC in another room and it really wants to print and have internet access. So I try to get my mac to help it out by using the built in airport to give it some wireless, and access to the printer via wireless. well I do that and the PC can connect to the shared network, but uh oh! we might have a few pesky snoopers around so I want to put the WEP on just to be on the safer side. Ouch, turns out PC and mac WEP aren't so compatible so what is my PC gonna do now. Well what it's gonna do is connect to local wi fi for internet, but now it can't print! I wonder if theres a way to SECURELY connect to my macs airpot from my PC or maybe theres a way to print wirelessly from my PC thats on a different network.

I installed an HP all-in-one printer on my server, connected via USB. In Serveradmin / Print I said to share it via IPP, AppleTalk and LPR. Other Macs on my network can see it, but nobody can print to it. They all insist it's a "generic postscript" printer and any discussion fails miserably.
A mac client installed a similar HP printer. Everyone else can see it and print to it.

Both my wife and I have MacBooks. Mine is the primary with an HP 3100 All-in-one connected via USB to it. I can print with no problem. I have tried everything possible to connect and allow my wife to print from her MacBook, but everytime she goes to print the job stays in the print queue with the notification 'Holding (Authentification Required) next to it. We both connect to the internet via WiFi, same codes, etc.
Driving me loco. Everything with Macs is just supposed 'to work'. It's just this one final step.

Secondly, I would like to be able to share a folder from my PC and connect to it from my MAC to copy files back and forth. I would like to do the opposite as well (connect PC to a shared folder on the MAC). How do I do this?
