OS X :: Spotlight Does Not Stop Searching
Sep 15, 2009
Since upgrading to Snow Leopard I have an issue with spotlight. When I search for something and I select it, spotlight seems to continue on searching and I have to click the spotlight button again and press ESC to stop it from continuing searching. I want it to stop searching after I've used it, as it spins the hard drive quite fast, which generates noise.

Is there any Terminal commands that will do this? I use Spotlight all the time - to load documents to loading applications. However, I hate how it makes any DVD's in my drive spin up. I never search DVD's, so turning this off wouldn't be an issue.

I need to have a question answered about searching in spotlight. Whenever I search for anything, I find what I need but after I open the "app/filename". Spotlight continues searching and it will continue to search until I "x-out" of the search field. Is this how spotlight works or can the search be turned off after selected a search result?

Yesterday I wanted to search for a desktop picture I downloaded. Naturally, I just pulled up the spotlight menu and typed in the name of the desktop picture and waited, and waited, and waited. It found the dictionary definition, and two applications but, the jpg was just taking FOREVER to show up. I ended up canceling the search and just finding it on my hard drive because I knew right where it was.
I tried re-indexing my drive, but that didn't solve the problem. However, after trying a few things, I found the culprit! I have a Boot Camp partition for Windows 7 (it's for games, don't judge me). Well, I figured out that since Snow Leopard can't write to my Boot Camp partition, it couldn't index it as well. All I had to do was go into System Preferences>Spotlight>Privacy and add my Boot Camp partition to the list. Now my Spotlight is lightening fast again. Sweet!
To summarize: Is Spotlight taking forever to search? Add your Boot Camp partition/drive to System Preferences>Spotlight>Privacy

I just switched to Mail from Entourage and am setup to Exchange. I just noticed when I search within Mail or through OSX Spotlight it doesn't appear to search within the Attachment in the emails. Is this how it is designed? If so, do I have any options?

Often, when I type a filename in Spotlight, it does not find it, although I am 100% sure the file exists. Is this normal? Can it be corrected?

I would like to know if Spotlight has or provides AI while predicting user's intention or searching. I would be grateful if anyone can provide a link or article that indicates Spotlight providing Artificial Intelligence. I have checked the Query Programming guide, but Apple documentation does not give any info about it. The closest link that I could search was [URl]

I've only had this drive for a few weeks, but I've noticed a tendency for the thing to always be running even when there's nothing for it to do. The head will click and gronk around continuously, the status light cycling over and over again. This generates a fair amount of heat in the drive after a while, and I imagine it'll wear down a lot faster if this keeps up. I've tried several different approaches to solve this, including many wipes and reloads. At its worst, the drive would grind away even if the computer was asleep or the drive disconnected from the computer. A few times this happened immediately following a reformat on a supposedly "erased" (but not zeroed) disk.
Nothing seemed to solve it. Western Digital recommended that I try plugging it into a different outlet, which I did. This has calmed it down somewhat, but the problem mostly persists, and I continue to get frequent "drive in use" errors when I attempt to eject the disk, even though as far as I can tell nothing is using it. One odd note: earlier today as it was chugging away, I quit the one program open besides the Finder (DragThing), and the churning immediately ceased. It's quiet for now, even after reopening DragThing, but I'm just waiting for something to get it all riled up again. I've observed this behavior on a Power Mac G5 running 10.5.8 and a March 2009 Core Duo iMac with 10.6.2. I'd really rather not ship it back to WD just yet.

I cannot get my imac to stop automatically searching for updates. I set preferences to monthly, or turn it off - it doesn't matter I cannot change it from checking for updates constantly. Furthermore, once it's checked for updates I cannot dismiss the ones I do not need or want. It constantly asks me to install the updates even though I would have no use for them.
Apple wants cash to solve the problem. Since it began occurring after my last paid OS update, that's BS.
Info:
iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

I use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone my internal HD to my External 3 times a week. I have CCC set to erase the external, and copy everything over each time it backs up. The only problem im having is I can't stop Spotlight from indexing/searching my external drive. Adding the drive to the Privacy tab in the Spotlight Prefs works, but only until the next backup, after the next backup, and a restart Spotlight indexes my External drive again. It's annoying cause when I search for files I get 2 of everything. How the heck do I stop spotlight from searching my external?

Is there any way to pause or stop the spotlight that happens after rebooting? It annoying that it keeps me from using Spotlight until it was done, and recently I was trying to use EyeTV as a DRV, and the video kept freezing, I suspect due to spotlight in the background. It is very frustrating to not be able to fully use my computer for some time after rebooting.
I tried "sudo mdutil -i off" and it didn't seem to have any effect, although I didn't stop the mds process after trying it. I did try killing mds before entering that command, and it just came back after a few seconds.

a few weeks ago I used a maitenance software (like onyx). I changed something in the spotlight settings, which made it indexing... without stopping.
I have now reinstalled Mac OS X.. everything worked ok. I then updated it... and the problem popped up again.

I've had Snow Leopard since the day it came out. And I installed it that same day. Since then Spotlight is constantly indexing and will not stop. I noticed about a week after installation when I went to use stoplight and it wouldn't let me because it was indexing. Now fast forward to today I still haven't fixed this problem because I never really needed to use it. So no I have the need, and I need to fix this problem. BTW I'm using a 13" aluminum Mac Book bought around June '09 the model right before the current 13" aluminum Mac Book Pro's

Randomly the volume keys/brightness etc. stop working and i can't open apps or shut it down normally. I recently installed a VPN.
The performance through the VPN is badly affected by the Airport scanning regularly; often the VPN hangs.
I have deleted the unnecessary wireless networks listed in the Advanced button under Network Preferences. However, the problem persists.
Can you advise how to either stop the scanning or stop it interfering with Internet connection?

I recently bought Rapidweaver and received the package today. I installed it, entered all the pertinent information including my email and the serial number, registered, and then went upstairs for lunch. Came back down and found that my cute little golden retriever had decided that the envelope, not the box, and not the little booklet... was tasty, so she ate it. I'm left with some cellophane and tiny wet pieces of white paper and no serial number! The software was installed and it is working just fine, and when I "unlocked" or activated it, it said OK, everything is done. Fortunately, the CD was in the Mac while Daisy had some fun.
I don't need to reinstall... but unlike other software (or on a PC in the registry) where you can look in the "about" section and see your serial number, the SN is not shown in the about window. I'm not about to phone the UK over this, but just for security's sake, I'd like to know how to retrieve the serial number on my mac so I can write it down inside the booklet and put it up high.

The other day I noticed an Opera icon on my dock, clicked and not surprisingly, Opera appeared. I have never installed Opera and Im the only one who has ever touched my macbook. I quit out of it, and it disappeared off my dock, which means not only had it installed itself but run all by itself too. So I went straight to my apps folder to find and delete it and it wasn't there. A spotlight search came up with nothing too? How is this even possible with the permission system of OS X? Any ideas on how to find out if/where it is installed?

I work in a graphics department and we finally switched to macs after using PCs forever (we got 27" imacs with i7 processors). All of our files are stored on a server which the entire company is connected to and is PC based. There are a few folders that contain excel files that I need to be able to search the contents. However, after the switch I am unable to do so. If I drag a few files from the folder to my desktop and search for something I know that is in one of those two files, it comes up immediately. I've already tried the app EasyFind, but I didn't have any success with that either (unless I had the settings wrong).
Also, the macs are pretty slow to run on the server, is this normal for a PC based server? Are there some settings I can have the IT guy look at and tweak to better talk to our computers? At first I thought maybe our computers were just indexing things, but we every day our computers restart, it takes a while to open certain folders again with many contents.

Anyone know of a Universal application like Mail Watch? I've used Mail Watch for years but it's a PPC app that doesn't work well with Leopard 10.5.4. Must work with POP accounts since Comcast doesn't have IMAP.

Just wondering if there's such a thing as a Keynote Viewer for PC's?
I have got iWork '08 and love Keynote far more than PowerPoint but my uni uses Windows PC's so it means I have to use PowerPoint for my lectures.
I know that if you save a Keynote presentation as a quicktime file, that works, but very few of the PC's have iTunes/quicktime installed.
