OS X :: MacBook Analog Audio Out Transmits Only One Channel Instead Of Two?
Jan 13, 2010
When I plug my MacBook into an external audio source via the headphone-jack using the red and white cables (do not know the technical name), I only receive sound out of one speaker. At first I thought one of my stereo speakers had blown out, but I plugged my computer into another stereo using another cord and it still only plays one speaker. Also, when I plug in any set of headphones I only still receive sound through one speaker (the left one). My computers speakers still work, and when nothing is plugged in it still says under the output type that it's Built-in Output. I also noticed that sometimes (but not every time) when I unplug something from the headphone jack that a red light flashes around two times, but it does not stay lit when there is nothing plugged in.
**Another note: The sound is not in mono in one speaker, it is just like one speaker is turned off.

I know the 1/8" minijack is both analog and optical, but I was wondering if the input jack is the same.

My friend is looking into buying the new 27" iMac Core i7 to replace his PC desktop. The only thing holding him back is that he has an analog surround sound system he uses for his speakers. I am having a hard time myself finding a converter that can make his speakers work in the iMac's optical digital output port. Any products out there that will do that?

The analog audio input on my Mac Pro has stopped working.Audio output still OK; USB audio input works fine but nothing from analog audio input.I know it's getting a signal as I can send the mixer output to a Zoom H4n and it records fine, but I need it to go directly into the computer for tutorial voiceovers. I've tried recording in Quicktime Player, Soundtrack Pro, Camtasia and Screenflow.I get no volume indication in the System Preferences>Sound panel.I opened Apple Midi Setup>analog input and I can adjust volume on the two channels but "Master" is stuck at zero.

I came across some youtube video with dual-language audio; ie. one language on the left channel and another language on the right channel. The Output page under Sound preference does not have the left/right balance control, probably due to the mono speaker in MBA. If I connect to an external speakers, or headphones, then the balance control re-appears. Is there a way to get around this problem, if I still want to use the build in mono-speaker?

I have a 12" 1.5 Powerbook which I purchased about two years ago. I never used headphones with the laptop until recently and I noticed that only one channel comes through.

Why can't I hear my music keyboard when it is connected thru the Analog Audio line-in port? Looking at the System Pref. - Sound menu - in-put - Line in Built-in Audio, I can see activity on the input levels when I press the Kawai piano keyboard but no sound is heard. All other sound systems- I-tunes etc are operating properly.

I know many say that the sheer volume of 16gb outweighs the speed difference between the two channel settings, but I'm wondering how 32-bit programs (mostly audio applications) will address the RAM best?

So, I'm on skype and everyone can hear all the background noise which is very annoying. I'm using the Mac book pro internal mic. Anyway to block the background noise?? and also, my headset has two plugins which is a sound/mic plug in and I noticed the mac doesn't have anywhere to plug in a mic just one for volume...

I'm looking to use the speakers (Logitech X-540) with my laptop with 5.1... but this is an analog system (has green/black/orange inputs), and Macbook Pros only output with optical through mini-TOSLink. What's the best (read cheapest) device for decoding the optical output to analog?
If this won't work, I'm probably willing to shell out a bit more cash (Z-5500 perhaps). If you have a digital 5.1 system recommendation ($350 or less), let me know.

All channels are jammed where I live and channel 14 is the one with the less overlapping. It is enabled on my AP but not on my airport card, how can I turn it on? I bought my Mac in Canada but I know live in Japan where channel 14 can be used.

I upgraded my late '09 13" MBP to 4gb, but one of the sticks apparently died. I'm about to replace it with my old 1gb stick so then I'll have 3gb total ram.
Will this turn off dual channel mode?

I recently purchased a Retina Macbook Pro 15" no more than 3 months ago.
Today I just noticed that whenever I connect my headphones I can hear the left channel clearly but the right channel is a lower volume and distorted.
at first I thought it was the headphones, but have tried various ones and it doesn't seem to be that.
Also, output from the internal speakers sounds fine, same level on both channels and clear

I have a white 13" MacBook. I'm totally Mac illiterate. I bought the Mac because I just about to dig my eyes out in frustration dealing with MS Vista. I like the MacBook.....but about a year and a half ago, the right channel of my 3.1 speaker setup cut out. It worked fine for the 1/1.5 years of ownership.
Internal speakers? Work just fine. Headphones? Perfect stereo.
External speakers with subwoofer? Right channel is dead.
I've tried max laptop volume and creeping volume on the actual speaker up. I've tried max external speaker volume and creeping the Mac volume up. I downloaded a ToneTester program. Internal speakers and headphones just fine. 3.1 externals? Right channel dead. I don't have the red-light jack issue. My Sound Output toggles between Headphones and Internal Speakers output perfectly. About 7 months ago while putzing with all the settings, I got it all back out-of-the-blue. Perfect stereo with subwoofer. I had it for about 2 months and then poof - right channel faded again.

I just bought a new MacBook Pro 15" running Leopard 10.5.6, and the clock is being weird. Last weekend we put the clocks forward an hour here in the UK and I suspect this has something to do with it. What's happening is that my clock is displaying an hour earlier than it actually is, and if I put it into manual mode rather than relying on the Euro Apple timeserver, that fixes it but then the time on my Mail is wrong - it says each message was received a hour before it actually was.
Then it gets really odd - if I change the timezone to London BST and then check the time & date panel, the digital clock still reads an hour early, but the analogue one beneath it displays the right time Then if I close the panel and re-open, I find it's reverted to GMT and both clocks say it's an hour early.

I'm converting analog video from a camcorder and vhs player through the elgato converter to a macbook pro 2011. I then have to convert the files to apple pro res LT using mpeg streamclip before they are compatible with FCP7. What converter box will output the video to a format that is FCP7 friendly? Not sure if the canopus units are what will do the trick.

Finding an effective way to transfer old VHS videos to my Mac with Yosemite so that I can burn them to DVDs. These are so important to me as they include videos of my three children from birth until the age of DVDs. There is NOTHING out there that I can find that will work. The "Debut" program available online for free does not clarify whether it will work with a Mac or with Yosemite.

I am about to plunge into the Mac world - can't wait and just want to know if I will be missing out on anything. At the moment I use BBC iPlayer and Channel 4OD a lot on my PC. I know that these do not wok on a Mac due to DRM issues, but I am hoping that they will work on a Mac if I run Vista and Parallels. Has anyone tried this?

I cannot get right channel out from either the built-in line out jack on the rear of my mac, or the front headphone jack. On the system preferences panel when I slide the balance to the right everything goes out. I first thought it was just an itunes issue, but the sound problem carries over with DVD playback.

I have a Blu-ray file (one I own and wanted on hdd for easy transport) on my computer. I want it to play on my Xbox 360 and it won't because it has 5.1 surround sound. Inside the file is the 2.0 audio track separate with instructions on how to merge/change it using a program called Yamb. The only problem is that it's Windows only. Do any of you know a program (preferably free) that can do this for Mac?
I have Toast Titanium 10 and toyed with it for awhile but couldn't figure it out.
