Where can I find the original program download files that I have downloaded off the net so I can burn them to disc and just load them up when I do a fresh install instead of searching again etc.
Also my friend does not have internet so I was going to do him a copy etc.
I've looked at some other posts that have gone over how to move files to an external drive, and they all say to use command while moving. I understand this copies the file and deletes the original, but when you make a copy and delete the original, you lose some of the original data, such as creation date, etc... This makes storage and organization more complicated than it has to be.

View 6 Replies View RelatedIn 09 I got my first mac and loved it. I had about a year to get to know it. its file structure, file types etc. So to say the least, I didnt have enough time to really get everything down pat. Like where all the specific files are, etc. I ended up 1300 bucks short for my engagement ring so it was either sell my car or my macbook (I made the wrong choice.) At the time I had a 512GB Intel SSD in the main drive bay and a hitachi travelstar 500GB 7200 RPM drive in the optibay. I had used Carbon copy cloner NUMEROUS times during testing and messing around with the dual drives and different partitions (at one point having OSX, XP and Linux on at the same time.) So to say the least I was very familiar with how to use CCC. So when I sold my MBP I threw the optic drive back in and sold it with the SSD. I took my 500GB hitachi drive, formated it in an external closure and used CCC to image my mac. It has ALL my pictures and home movies on it allong with a lot of programs. I think I was using something like 400GB of the 500 GB drive. All the personal files were encrypted using disk utility. Then I booted it to make sure it worked. Everything worked great So I put the now external drive in a case and it sat inside of a drawer.
fast forward to now. I purchased my mother a mac mini for christmas. This was a great opportunity to get all my encrypted pics and movies off the drive. So i plugged in the drive via USB, rebooted holding option and it shows the drive but wont let me boot it. When I plug in the drive while the mac is on, a message pops up saying "the disk was not readable by this computer". When I open disk utility and try to repair it, it says disk utility cant repair, back up as many files as possible, blah blah blah. the only info it gives me is the name of the disk which is disk2s2, and that it is formated as mac os extended. Apparently Between me testing to see if this disk was bootable, packing it up and storing it in a drawer and pulling it out a year later it got corrupt and wont boot. So here is the deal. I installed Data rescue 3. The first option I try is quick scan. DR3 tells me right away that the boot files are corrupt and it will need deep scan. So I run Deep scan and 10 hours later I have A LOT of system files. I have tried to go through it and find the encrypted files (which should just be dmg's right?) but no luck. Is there anything else anyone can think of to get the files off of this "corrupt" drive? I dont have enough experience with the Mac file system and just the mac in general to get this thing to work.
I'm trying to clean up my mac by locating the largest files. I remember that there was a program that sorted all of your huge files where you can look, edit, delete, do whatever you want with them, but I have forgotten what this program is called. I've looked all over and cannot find it. Does anyone have an idea of what it is called or maybe how I could locate huge files on my HD?

I moved my iTunes Media folder to a second hard drive to free up space. I followed the Apple Support instruction for doing this. I have 200+ missing songs that I have to manually located. Â
Is there a way to do a group rather than one song at a time? I have over 2,000 songs, podcast, and movies. I am surprised just these fews can't be located by iTunes after I made the move.Â

I have the latest version of iTunes. I used to store my itunes music on an 80gb firewire drive. Got a new 500gb usb drive. transferred all files manually to this new drive. in iTunes i changed my media folder to this new drive. However alot of files aren't being read or found so i must locate each manually. Is there anything I can do to make iTunes read from the new hard drive now?

Here's my problem: I'd very much like to download an embedded flash video from this page: http://bit.ly/d24fEU. (One has to click 'start' for the flash to load.)
But web developers have become wily it seems. No longer do the old methods appear to work. I've tried: Apps for downloading youtube videos, using the Activity window in Safari (only a small SWF file of about 21kb appears in the activity window), numerous Firefox plugins� To no avail.
There are apparently apps for Windows that can manage to download these tricky types of videos, is there anything or any method on the Mac? I've been ripping my hair out trying. I've searched the forum, but none of the suggested methods work.

I have a download folder on my dock and also on my desktop. When I click it open there is nothing there. However, when I go over to the left hand sidebar of Finder and I click on the Downloads (down arrow) label it brings up all my downloads. I used to have a spring loaded icon on my dock ... now its just empty unless I press the Downloads (down arrow) label in Finder. How can I restore the original download folder that was spring loaded on my dock?

So while browsing the internet I have had the computer pop up to alert me that a program has downloaded itself. The first was PerformanceOptimizer which shrunk my screen and "informed me about the dangers of viruses". Then it force downloaded itself and my downloads stack showed me the .exe file. I removed and ran clamXav. Now the same thing happened but today it called itself Antivirus 2009. I force quit Safari and nothing downloaded to my stack. Is this how others here notice these attempts that are aimed at PC users?
View 6 Replies View RelatedWill someone clever please tell us newbies how to fix the problem: I have been using Filezilla (before that, Cyberduck) to upload files to my older style HTML website. I just installed Lion and there is a big cross sign through the latest Filezilla icon saying "PowerPC programs don't work under Lion." I read posts from people saying it works, other posts talking about another kind of FTP on the Mac itself, and lots of talk of SFTP and command line stuff.
For we who just use these apps by pushing buttons and moving on when they work, can you list step by step what we need to do to get Filezilla working again, or point to a different program to download? If I need to go back and reinstall my entire previous Snow Leopard machine from my bootable clone, tell me that and I'll do it. I have a long lost of to-do's and can't spend days experimenting with clean installs (however you do those).
When I try to download something from download.com or other websites, it just goes to a blank page and the download never happen, I open the download tab and saw it was blank.
this really frustrating, its the same on Safari and mozilla on my Mac.
When I attempt to download a .wmv file, it appears to download (as evidenced in download manager) but then stalls forever and never finishes the job. I can download other media files without problem. I have updated WMP. Im on G4 PB 10.4.3.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm deleting all of my files from itunes to start fresh since right now it is unorganized, the problem with this is that when I first installed itunes it searched my hard drive and added sounds that I don't know where they came from, in fact some of them look like from the operating system, so I'm afraid to delete something that a program or the actual OS needs (since I don't know if these are just copies or are the originals). Is there a way to know if the original of a certain file exists? In other words I need to know if what I have in iTunes is a copy or the only file in the hard drive (original) and if it is a copy I would like to know where it came from or somehow find the original.

I am spending tomorrow with my grandmother and she doesn't have the internets but I'd like to download some free programming manuals for later viewing. Unfortunately they don't have a PDF. Internet Explorer for Mac had a really nice feature where you could download a site for later offline viewing. I haven't seen a comparable feature in any other browser.

There seems to be a problem with connecting to tracker, however I have been using Tomato for months and it has worked perfectly in the past.

I was cleaning up my desktop, and I created a new folder and was going to just drag everything into it. I selected everything, dragged and WHOA! All of my original files were GONE and only alias's were left. I search and the originals aren't found, I open the alias's and they want me to find the originals. The originals are just GONE. And I still don't know what I did!!
