I have the latest version of iTunes. I used to store my itunes music on an 80gb firewire drive. Got a new 500gb usb drive. transferred all files manually to this new drive. in iTunes i changed my media folder to this new drive. However alot of files aren't being read or found so i must locate each manually. Is there anything I can do to make iTunes read from the new hard drive now?

Is there a way to do a group rather than one song at a time? I have over 2,000 songs, podcast, and movies. I am surprised just these fews can't be located by iTunes after I made the move.

I recently bought a 160GB external hard drive, and decided to transfer my iTunes music to it. I followed the instructions in the Help section of the iTunes program. The first time, I mistakenly created an empty "iTunes" folder and put an "iTunes music" folder inside, where i proceeded to copy the files. I had already set the defult location of the library to my F: drive, my external hard drive. However, the original location of the files stayed in iTunes. Again, following the advice of the iTunes program, I deleted the original folders, and I dragged the new iTunes music folder into the window - at which point i had TWO copies of each file - the first one with an exclamation beside it (original file missing) and the second being my new copies.

I remember that there was a program that sorted all of your huge files where you can look, edit, delete, do whatever you want with them, but I have forgotten what this program is called. A great way to free up some space on my Powerbook g4. Question is, why does iTunes keep changing my library folder after I'd already changed it when I initially set up the hard drive as my iTunes library destination?
Another question is how do I make sure that all my music files automatically go to the folder on the external hard drive when I download music. For example I may snag a free song from a website and will double click it after downloading and it plays in itunes. I want that file to be saved on my external hard drive as well (yes it's plugged up and plugged in).
I only have an 8g ipod so I have to constantly check and uncheck songs that I want to hear, so I want to be sure they are all in the same locale. And one way I know that certain files are on my internal and not external is when i unplug my external those files still play when they shouldn't unless it's plugged up.
if i delete files off my internal hard drive (Macintosh HD), will it still be on my external hard drive or will it just add to it?

Did a quick search for the folder on the hard-drive and its not there either. The only thing I can think is maybe the upgrade to Lion did something I hadn't expected. But not sure. Has anyone else had this problem? I THINK I might have it stored on an external...but what a pain to find all the possibly missing music.

I need to free up room on my hard drive. I would like to delete all my .ipa apps. Can I do that? I have itunes match, and I also sync to icloud. I know when I want to reinstall an app I just do that through the cloud. I have deleted apps to test that this is ok but the apps end up getting reinstalled. Here is what I want to do:
1. delete all my .ipa files on my computer to save a lot of hard drive space (I have a lot of apps....)
2. stop syncing to my computer, and only sync to icloud
3. rely on itunes match for backing up music
4. have calendar and contacts sync through icloud
5. if I need to reinstall apps do that through the tab on the app store for 'purchases.'

If I keep my file directory structure and naming the same, can I simply "re-point" iTunes to this new storage location and all my songs (etc...) will keep working in iTunes? And I cant find even how to get to Library.Its like its all changed. When I go to Finder (is this library?), under devices all I see is a Firefox icon and my External Hard Drive.But where is the main drive within the mac?? In 09 I got my first mac and loved it. I had about a year to get to know it. its file structure, file types etc. So to say the least, I didnt have enough time to really get everything down pat. Like where all the specific files are, etc. I ended up 1300 bucks short for my engagement ring so it was either sell my car or my macbook (I made the wrong choice.) At the time I had a 512GB Intel SSD in the main drive bay and a hitachi travelstar 500GB 7200 RPM drive in the optibay. I had used Carbon copy cloner NUMEROUS times during testing and messing around with the dual drives and different partitions (at one point having OSX, XP and Linux on at the same time.) So to say the least I was very familiar with how to use CCC. So when I sold my MBP I threw the optic drive back in and sold it with the SSD. I took my 500GB hitachi drive, formated it in an external closure and used CCC to image my mac. It has ALL my pictures and home movies on it allong with a lot of programs. I think I was using something like 400GB of the 500 GB drive. All the personal files were encrypted using disk utility. Then I booted it to make sure it worked. Everything worked great So I put the now external drive in a case and it sat inside of a drawer.
fast forward to now. I purchased my mother a mac mini for christmas. This was a great opportunity to get all my encrypted pics and movies off the drive. So i plugged in the drive via USB, rebooted holding option and it shows the drive but wont let me boot it. When I plug in the drive while the mac is on, a message pops up saying "the disk was not readable by this computer". When I open disk utility and try to repair it, it says disk utility cant repair, back up as many files as possible, blah blah blah. the only info it gives me is the name of the disk which is disk2s2, and that it is formated as mac os extended. Apparently Between me testing to see if this disk was bootable, packing it up and storing it in a drawer and pulling it out a year later it got corrupt and wont boot. So here is the deal. I installed Data rescue 3. The first option I try is quick scan. DR3 tells me right away that the boot files are corrupt and it will need deep scan. So I run Deep scan and 10 hours later I have A LOT of system files. I have tried to go through it and find the encrypted files (which should just be dmg's right?) but no luck. Is there anything else anyone can think of to get the files off of this "corrupt" drive? I dont have enough experience with the Mac file system and just the mac in general to get this thing to work.
Where can I find the original program download files that I have downloaded off the net so I can burn them to disc and just load them up when I do a fresh install instead of searching again etc.
Also my friend does not have internet so I was going to do him a copy etc.
I am trying to transfer music and photos from my Windows laptop to my new iMac.
All the files are stored under my User name on the laptop, but the Aisstant Manager only showes files located on the C: drive. I can also see the boxes Users and Administrator, but they are both empty.
How do I run the Assistant Manager so that it located all the files on my laptop?

I can't find a thread that addresses my particular problem, so I'm hoping somebody out there can point me in the right direction. I have a 100gb iTunes folder on my MacBook which I wish to transfer to my new iMac. Rather than simply copy it across to the iMac's HD, I would rather copy it to an external HD and then run iTunes from the external HD connected to my iMac. So my question is simply what is the best way to do this.
Also, can anyone recommend a great external HD which won't expire after 6 months?
How do I do this? It seems that when I hit Delete on a song in my library it just takes it off iTunes and doesn't move to the trash.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI'm on Tiger 10.4.11, and the latest iTunes. I have an external hard drive on which I keep all my music files, managed by iTunes. I'm running out of room on that drive. At some point, it is not practical to keep increasing the size of the drive, as the reliability goes down. I'd like to keep my drives to 1TB or so. So, the other solution is to add a second external hard drive, where all new music files can go to. How to do it, so iTunes doesn't freak out? Here's what I'm thinking - could you guys help make it work?
I thought to add the second drive and then in iTunes preferences -->Advanced---> iTunes Music folder location CHANGE to the NEW drive. That way, I'd have iTunes copy all new music to the NEW DRIVE. Question: Now, how do I go about having iTunes reference files on the FIRST drive, so that the Library is up to date, and when I select something to play from the FIRST drive, iTunes knows how to find it?
Is it possible take a playlist of songs and put those songs onto an external hard drive without finding each song in the finder and dragging it into the hard drive? I want to move just a certain few songs from my Mac Pro to my Power Book and I'd rather not waste CDs/DVDs in the process... but getting each file individually would be a huge waste of time. I have looked on Apple.com and nothing has been able to help. Well here it is I am having trouble trying to get my music from my external Hard Drive.
So my old laptop took a crap on me. I took it in and they told me it would cost more to fix it then to just by a whole new one so I did just that. Well before the company gave me back my old laptop they asked if I wanted all my files backed up onto a external Hard Drive that way I don't have to fuss with it later. So I went out that day and bought a "My Book" External Hard Drive. They did it and well now I am trying to get my iTunes music from that and there isn't any folders of music when I open up the iTunes folder all I have is

I have tried dragging them in (When I do that a "UB" is under the iTunes symbol) , I have tried adding File, Adding Folder and nothing happens... it shows nothing in there. Then when I click on them to open all it does is open iTunes and nothing happens. I have tried downloading a couple of programs to get the music off my iPod but they all said there is no iPod connected when it was. I have also tried to unistall iTunes and try and go into the iPod and see if I can get it that way and there wasn't anything in there beside the folders for contacts, photos etc. (Still nothing even in those folders) Please I don't know what else to do and I can't just go onto that old laptop and do an easy transfer since the motherboard went out on it. Is there any hope at all or am I stuck with an unusable iTunes and iPod?

I accidentally deleted the wrong tracks. They landed in the trash. I found out, pulled it out of the trash and put it back into the folder where they were. Only: iTunes doesn't see them there. How can I import songs into iTunes that are already on my hard drive? Just dropping the song files into the right folder doesn't work. iTunes doesn't see them.

But about two weeks ago, suddenly, most of my songs are with that "!" that the original file canno't be found. They are songs that have been there for some time now, and I haven't changed anything location-wise. I realy can't stand the idea of selecting over ten thousands songs file-by-file.The only idea I've got was to actualy "reset" my iTunes lybrary... But I realy didn't wanted to loose my "play counter"?
