Today my Keyboard.prefPane stopped working. When I click it, I get the load message on the title scrren, but it never loads. If I click the button again the window goes blank. While doing this, I get this on Console. What can I do to get it working again?

my 5k iMac "cannot open desktop and screen saver prefernces pane" nor can it open "display preferences pane" under system preferences; what is going on? I restarted in safe mode and tried several other fixes from earlier questions but nothing changed.

Alright, this is possibly the strangest bug I've ever encountered on my mac. Right now, in my System Preferences, the Accounts pane won't load. Every other pane, including custom ones, works fine. But if I click on the Accounts pane, it chills there saying "Loading Accounts". If I click it again, it pulls up an empty pane. Also, under the Sharing pane, if I go to SMB sharing and click "configure accounts", nothing happens. I assumed it was permissions, but that didn't fix it. I did a full disk verification too, and that didn't help. The pref pane is there, I have read permission for everything, and the .nibs all open up in Interface Builder fine.
View 18 Replies View RelatedWhenever I try and open up my energy saver preferences a pop up appears "Could not install (null) preferences pane". The energy saver preferences is not in my system preferences anymore I have to spotlight search to try and open it. I have the highest update on all of my settings for my macbook pro (one of the original 13" pros from when they changed the macbook unibody to the macbook pro). I've tried googling and nothing really substantial comes up or I just cannot understand it. I've tried repairing disk permissions etc.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm having an issue with my iMac running 10.5.4. Whenever I try to select a screen saver System Preferences starts to beach ball, and then will crash. Sometimes I can get it to select the screen saver that I want, but then if I try to preview it, System Preferences beach balls, and then crashes. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?
View 17 Replies View RelatedHas anyone else found that their screensaver system preferences pane crashes to the desktop when you try to access it? Ever since I upgraded to 10.5.6 I have had this problem. My screensaver is now just a black screen and I can't change it because the preference pane crashes everytime. Spaces, expose and dashboard seem to now only work when they want and its not very often. I have reinstalled 10.5.6 using the combo update to see if that fixes things but it doesnt. I have been send all the crash reports to Apple. This is REALLY getting me mad now! Im on a PMG5 dual 1.8. Never had any problems with it until 10.5.6 came along. I have an ATI X800XT could the update of the ATI stuff in 10.5.6 be causing all this crap? I am reluctant to do a clean install because it will take me days to get all my apps back and how I have them set up now plus I don't think it will make the slightest bit of difference as the combo update hasn't.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've cleared the preference file and system prefs/spotlight caches with no luck. Repaired permissions. It seems the Music icon is holding up the others. If I re-arrange them they break only after "Music." This is in the console after opening the preference pane:

I've been having troubles with my finder the past few weeks. The trash would not empty unless I would "relaunch" the finder. Sometimes, even after a relaunch, the trash would still not empty. After a restart, however, I could usually empty the trash. Until today
So, I tried repairing permissions using disk utility. After permissions were fixed, I still had the problem.
I then deleted the following files:
com.apple.sidebarlists.plist.lockfile
com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
com.apple.finder.plist.lockfile
com.apple.finder.plist
(Actually, I didn't truly delete them, I just put them in a temp folder on my desktop.)
The trash seems to empty just fine now, but now the preferences pane for my Finder is completely blank -- and doesn't open immediately. It looks like this:

I can't open the Security preference pane in System Preferences. I can open desktop settings, spotlight, expos & spaces etc just fine, but the moment I click 'Security', I get the spinning beach ball, system preferences freezes and I have to force shut it down. I made a quick video using Screenflow to demonstrate the issue (the beach ball doesn't seem to appear in the video .. it did though)

I can access my music, books, and apps libraries just fine. When I click on Movies or TV Shows libraries, iTunes quits unexpectedly. This has been happening for a few weeks, but I don't remember when I last updated iTunes. Currently, 10.6 is installed. I am assuming that this problem originated with my update to iTunes 10.6.

I just install Lion 10.7 from scratch using a bootable DVD I made from the Install Mac OS X Install ESD Dmg found within the app. After restoring my accounts and data from a time machine backup, everything seems to work fine except for 3 preference panes within the System Preferences, (Desktop & Screen Saver, Energy Saver, and Spotlight.) I've tried reinstalling Lion over the current installation, I've tried reinstalling the latest combo update, I've trying repairing disk permissions, I've tried installing System Preferences app as well as each individual .prefpane, none of which worked. When trying to run the preference pane I get:
"Preferences Error. Could not load Desktop & Screen Saver preference pane." Replace Desktop & Screensaver part with Energy Saver and Spotlight respectively for each pane. When I run the preference pane, here is the output from the console:

View 3 Replies View RelatedAround 2 months ago, the local AASP techs, working together with Apple Asia techs, finally agreed to replace the top case, fans, and superdrive of my uMBP. At that time, neither the tech nor myself could detect any vibration on the uMBP keyboard, and I took my uMBP home satisfied. After a month, I thought I was beginning to feel some vibration on the TAB key, but it was so slight I dismissed it as something psychological, perhaps even trauma from the previous episode which lasted for weeks. Now it's back with a vengeance. I treat my uMBP with kid gloves. I clean its whole surface every week.
I rarely take it anywhere. I've never bumped or dropped it. I've even bought an external keyboard and mouse so that I won't wear its keyboard and trackpad. In fact, I've even restricted my use of the 9600 graphics chip, preferring to use the 9400 as much as possible to avoid taxing the fans. I mean, if some/most keys were vibrating, then I could say that it could be a loose/poorly positioned keyboard/fan(s), but if it's only the bloody TAB key. I've gone through three fan changes and one top case replacement after all.
After installing a fresh copy of Snow Leopard onto my Macbook Pro I reinstalled Ms Office 2008 from the CD only to find that every time I open it, it crashes straight away. The only one that works in entourage which runs absolutely fine! If found a few threads in the forums about using illegal copies and Microsoft blocking it. However I am using a fully paid for 3 user version of office.
I've tried deleting the files found in
~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008/Microsoft Office 2008 Settings.plist
/Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Office/OfficePID.plist
and used a different serial code. However the problem still persists. I've even tried installing from a different disc and it still doesn't work.
I decided to reset Safari because occasionally I get beachballs. I also deleted the caches on my MBP. Now when I open Safari, the window pops up but then I get a never ending beachball. Do I have to now uninstall Safari and reinstall it from the Apple website?

I recently re-installed Tiger on my macbook because I'd accidentally deleted system preferences and I needed it back. I still have all of my HD data, except that iTunes will bounce once in the dock, and then disappear. It doesn't open to my library like it usually would.

I have a macbook a little over a year old. It's my first mac and I love it. Yesterday though it started acting really weird. I first noticed that it was really, really hot and the fan was running. I turned it off and back on and here's what I found out:
Applications are being deleted from macbook. ITunes, IPhoto, iChat have clear question marks over icon. There are 8-10 blank spaces in the Applications folder where applications have been deleted. However, data is still there (ex. pictures still there, but no iPhoto).
Internet= Says I have internet but wont connect.
Cannot open " System Preferences" or "Internet Preferences".
If connected to home computer will connect to internet and allowed to open internet preferences but still no system preferences.
If shut down....takes a while to come back on and starts up 2-3 times.
Also "Preview" is gone. Now " ColorSync Utility" opens.
Is this my hard drive dying? I'm tech challenged, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have two problems - in trying to fix one I may have caused the other.
1. When I press and hold down the shift key and press more than one letter in sequence, only the first is capitalized. I am using TypeIt4Me, but I checked the settings and that does not seem to be the problem. The Caps Lock works fine. This has survived through several restarts.
2. I was trying settings with the keyboard preferences in Systems Preferences and now the volume keys on the keyboard activate the Dashboard and Spaces. When I uncheck the prefs I get an error beep when I press the keys with the speakers on them. With the defaults restored, I go back to the Dashboard and Spaces responses.
I am using a September 2009 iMac, Os 10.6.2 4Gb ram <- Note the Gb This is an example of problem 1.
I have a new-to-me G3, OS 10.3. The keyboard is set up with foreign characters in place of the following keys: `~[]{}|. (There may be other keys replaced with foreign characters but these are the most problematic). I tried resetting using preferences, international, input but this did not work. How can I restore the keyboard to it's original character set?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've had my MacBook Pro for just over a year now and it's been awesome (it was my first Mac after being a PC user for 20 yrs).
As soon as I got my Mac I modified the mouse & keyboard to act more like windows:modified the control key to work as commandenabled secondary (right) click on the track pad
This worked fine for a long time, then all of a sudden in the last month or so these preferences keep being lost and I need to go back in and set them up again.
Have I 'unlocked' some setting that allows these preferences to keep resetting? Or is my mac suffering from windows-like OS issues?
