OS X :: Keyboard Preferences Unchecked - Error Beep?
Jan 5, 2010
I have two problems - in trying to fix one I may have caused the other.
1. When I press and hold down the shift key and press more than one letter in sequence, only the first is capitalized. I am using TypeIt4Me, but I checked the settings and that does not seem to be the problem. The Caps Lock works fine. This has survived through several restarts.
2. I was trying settings with the keyboard preferences in Systems Preferences and now the volume keys on the keyboard activate the Dashboard and Spaces. When I uncheck the prefs I get an error beep when I press the keys with the speakers on them. With the defaults restored, I go back to the Dashboard and Spaces responses.
I am using a September 2009 iMac, Os 10.6.2 4Gb ram <- Note the Gb This is an example of problem 1.

Somewhat new to Mac now. In the Energy Saving settings should I have the 'put hd to sleep' button checked or unchecked? I know with it checked preserves power, but I've read that its bad to do, just wondering if I can get some experts to tell me what I should do.

Something has happened in my Network preferences and I believe it happened while doing a Spotlight search. When I open the Network preference window, I get an almost instant error dialogue stating "Your Network settings have been changed by another application". As soon as I hit "OK" to dismiss the dialogue box, it comes right back. If I'm really quick, I can get back to the main preferences screen before the warning reappears. I've tried logging out, rebooting, trashing the Library --> Preferences --> apple.networkConfig.plist file (followed by a log-out) and nothing has made a difference.

Writing your preferences to disk has failed. Your preferences may not have been saved. The permissions on ~/Library/Preferences may be wrong or your disk may be full.Â
I have read previous discussions on this (2011) and used disk utility to clear permissions, but cannot find any mail.plist in LibraryÂ

this is starting to bug me, so hope you can help. Currently, I only have a 16GB iPhone, and so in order to get my music on there, I have to select the 'only import checked songs' and select them on my iTunes playlist. However, when I'm listening to music on my iMac, I cannot listen to an un-checked album, it just skips over to the next checked song. Is there something really simple I'm missing here? Is there an option to play all songs, regardless of whether they're checked or not? Or is there a better way to sync my music? This is doing my head in.

I have unchecked every app in the Login Items menu in System Pref. Even deleted them out of the menu. Safari, iTunes, Mail, and a Finder folder show up automatically when I restart or login to my iMac. I have read some posts on this and I'm also aware that you can right click on the app in the dock and make sure it is unchecked to open at login. This problem seems to have started after I removed programs I did not want to start up in the Login Item menu in System Preferences.

My Snow Leopard boot disk had 12 years of accumulated crud, and was running slowly. So I did a nice clean install of Lion on a fresh partition.Redid some configuring, like sudoers, Flash, Time machine interval to 4 hours, locate.updatedb, etc. Wanted my old "Location" info (about a dozin networks).Gave Migration assistant a try. Unchecked EVERYTHING except Network Settings: Perfect.Only 24 KB. Probably just a couple of .plist files. What could go wrong? I'm running from a non-admin account. It copied all the Users. It copied all the Applications. It copied all the root level cruft. My pristine boot drive is burried deeper in crap that the American Constitution. My backup is a day old, and I worked all day. Another half a day to undo this mess. Next time I will find the config file and copy it myself. But why did it do this?

I have a new-to-me G3, OS 10.3. The keyboard is set up with foreign characters in place of the following keys: `~[]{}|. (There may be other keys replaced with foreign characters but these are the most problematic). I tried resetting using preferences, international, input but this did not work. How can I restore the keyboard to it's original character set?

I've had my MacBook Pro for just over a year now and it's been awesome (it was my first Mac after being a PC user for 20 yrs).Â
As soon as I got my Mac I modified the mouse & keyboard to act more like windows:modified the control key to work as commandenabled secondary (right) click on the track padÂ
This worked fine for a long time, then all of a sudden in the last month or so these preferences keep being lost and I need to go back in and set them up again.
Have I 'unlocked' some setting that allows these preferences to keep resetting? Or is my mac suffering from windows-like OS issues?

My niece was poking away at my MacBook and somehow brought up System Preferences by clicking some combination in the bottom left of the keyboard. I think it may of involved the ~ key. Does anyone know what it might be as it would be very useful? Last week she managed to move the dock to the left of the screen instead of the bottom with what looked like a single keystroke. However there may of been some kind of trackpad swipe involved.

On my MBP under Snow Leopard, the F-key keyboard shortcuts (e.g. Ctrl-F2 (select menu)) suddenly stopped working. This might have happened after a recent OS-update, I'm not sure. Anyone else have this problem, or a possible solution?
I've already pressed restore default under Preferences -> Keyboard -> Keyboard Shortcuts*, this made no difference.

I just install Lion 10.7 from scratch using a bootable DVD I made from the Install Mac OS X Install ESD Dmg found within the app. After restoring my accounts and data from a time machine backup, everything seems to work fine except for 3 preference panes within the System Preferences, (Desktop & Screen Saver, Energy Saver, and Spotlight.) I've tried reinstalling Lion over the current installation, I've tried reinstalling the latest combo update, I've trying repairing disk permissions, I've tried installing System Preferences app as well as each individual .prefpane, none of which worked. When trying to run the preference pane I get:Â
"Preferences Error. Could not load Desktop & Screen Saver preference pane." Replace Desktop & Screensaver part with Energy Saver and Spotlight respectively for each pane. When I run the preference pane, here is the output from the console:Â
3/19/12 6:13:04.765 PM System Preferences: [NSPrefPaneBundle instantiatePrefPaneObject] (/System/Library/PreferencePanes/DesktopScreenEffectsPref.prefPane): principalClass is nil.Â
All three give the same error, again replacing DesktopScreenEffectsPref.prefpane with the corresponding pane.

I bought a 13 macbook pro a few weeks ago. My first mac, and I absolutely love it, but I noticed a strange thing occur a few times I restart or power up my mac. I came home after work and turned the computer on, I pressed the power button and the computer let out a loud, drawn out beep, and didnt turn on. I pressed teh button again and finally the start up sound went off, the disk drive spun, and everything ran smoothly. This has happened on more than one occasion, and just the other night, I installed an update and restarted the machine. As soon as the machine restarted, the beeping went off again, followed by the start up noise, followed by the grey loading screen. Anyone else familiar or experience this strange, loud, drawn out beep when they restart or try to turn their machine on? I'm just wondering if I need to be concerned or if this happens to others?

Is there any way to add, more beep sounds in Mac OS X? I am getting tired of the same ones. I liked it when we could just add a sound file to the System file and have another beep sound.

When I turn on my macbook pro I'm getting a single beep followed by nothing. It started happening all of a sudden a few days ago. Following the beep, I hold down the power button to turn it off again and start it up and then usually get nothing a couple of times - eventually after 2/3 goes at turning it on and off, it'll eventually start up as usual. I've read that 1 beep signals a problem with RAM? Is that right? The RAM I have in there what it came with so I can't imagine it's that.

My Macbook is awesome, absolutely no complaints except for this loud "Ding-dong" noise that comes at really random times. It's sort of fuzzy, like a recording on a cell phone (which I'm sure it's not), and it's just a higher pitched beep then a slightly lower pitched beep.
I've searched everywhere and I haven't found any posts or anything at all like this. I can have no applications open, other than background processes (I'll list those below) and it'll make the noise. So I sort of assume it's either some ridiculous Leopard malfunction or that it's one of the Preference Panes I have installed. If anyone has this same problem let me know, I'm going to start recording exactly what's open whenever it makes the noise and try to find something in common between them.
