I am fairly new to the OS, just switched from a PC. I would like to know if I can set up a workflow so that with a speech command to my Macbook I can open a specific URL in firefox. How would I set that up?
I have been trying to write an automator script that will take various files from my downloads folder and my desktop folder and organize each file into various parts of my computer.
I have it set to select those folders, then get their contents, then filter by extension and then move those files to a certain other folder. The problem is I have it filter by extension, png first and if there are no png files the script ends with an error. So I have to have each different kind of file sitting in one of those folders or else the script ends. Is there a way that I can get around this and have the whole script run every time? Or is there some way (maybe variables) that I could get this to work.
I have done a little apple script before, but nothing with variables and nothing too fancy, although it's one of my priorities this summer to learn the language.
Guys, how can i save a text edit document in a designated sub folder? All this time the only option to save a text edit doc for me is either in a document folder or other non-sub folders (e.g. desktop, etc).
I'm using iTunes 10.6 and Lion. i have a two problems. i recently moved my iTunes library to my portable hard drive. i have changed the new location under Preference/Advanced to "/portable drive/MUSIC". I have checked 'Keep iTunes Media folder organized" and unchecked 'Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library. 1) After moving my music and and consolidating, some of my music are in the right folder, which is in "/portable drive/MUSIC" folder, but a majority of the music are created into a NEW SUBFOLDER music folder. e.g.: /portable drive/MUSIC/music/ ?? Why is that happen and how can I move tell iTunes to just put it in the main and 1st MUSIC folder. Do you know why it creates a subfolder name music? 2) When importing new music, it doesn't automatically go into the designated folder but instead retains in the original folder that was imported from? e.g.: i import music from mac hard drive into iTunes and when I click on Get Info on the track, the location is still at /my mac hard drive/duran duran instead of /portable drive/MUSIC/.  How do I get it to organized the music into /portable drive/MUSIC/

I currently run Safari 5.1.6 on an iMac with OS X 10.7.4 and no matter which page I designate as my Home Page, Safari ignores this and on start-up always opens the last page I was on.
I'm getting this damn message every time I try to open an app. Every time I open Firefox for instance, I'll get this message...no matter how many times I click on "Open". Can someone help? FYI, I recently bought a 27" iMac and I did download all my apps and installed them instead of migrating using Time Machine.
can't open the program time machine located in the folder /applications/time machine anymore, message says program ain't working for unknown reaason, but I still can open time machine in the menu bar. any clues what the trouble might be? and/or is there any way to reinstall time machine only on os x 10.7.3?Â
btw., on the system backup hd which is a mirror of the imac system, the programm still works
Just curious as to why every time I open Terminal, there is a different name preceding ~John$ Here are some examples: wks50633:~John$ iMac:~John$ Brooke-PC:~John$ localhost:~John$
I was wondering if there was any simply way of setting a repetitive task of checking a certain page at certain times each day. (Like every hour or so).
On my MacBook I've had Time Machine backing up to an external USB hard drive for a good while now. At some point in the past, the interface to recover files has stopped working; I can click "Enter Time Machine" but literally nothing happens. No errors, no windows open, nothing. I've tried some things I found in other places to no avail, but most of them are associated with some kind of error code, which probably means that it isn't the same problem I have.
Has anyone ever had an issue with time machine not opening? I am trying to open the app to run a backup and it is not doing anything I can see, even in activity monitor? It did seem to be working fine, pop in a new external hard drive and it would ask if I wanted to use this drive? Ran it once saw how long it was going to take and cancelled. Now when it comes to wanting to use it the app will not open, has anyone has this issue, I am stuck?
Is there any alternative from running it from the terminal?
When I try to open Time Machine nothing happens. I have a clone of my system but can't copy time machine to the applications folder because the system won't permit it because it is used by the OS. How do I restore time machine in OS X Lion. Tried the usual things like restarting.
Every single time I open Photo booth the damn thing crashes. When I try to open it the second time, it usually opens fine. (Sometimes freezes). It's always the first time I try to open it and the damn thing crashes. It's driving me nuts.
I'm looking for an application that can track, on a daily basis, what files I had open and for how long they were open. Mostly it's because I'm really bad at tracking my time spent on projects and by the time I get around to logging my time I can't remember what I did last week!
I've switched to mac around December and everything was working so fine till 5 days ago. First I can say I have the 24'' 3.06 processor 4 gb of ram and 500 gb hdd from which 40 gb free space.
5 days ago I've noticed that when I was watching movies with vlc the program was pausing, chocking and I was soLving the issue by ff a few seconds. The next couple of days was the same and I've noticed as well that mac os x v.10.5.7 was loading slower and slower. Last night I've restarted and the startup screen came up with the apple logo and the little dots circle that was showing it's loading. Waited more than one hour and nothing happened. Restarted with the mac os install disc and went to disk utility. Done the disk verify - all ok, no problems. Did the permissions verify and found some of them but after I did the repair permissions I did another verify and was finding the same problems. Anyway shut down everything got upset. Restarted this morning and I took like 10 min to load up and finally the icons showing up. But now evrything I do the beachball is keep spinning and when it stop and I try to click something it's spinning again. For ex I've deleted an icon from dock in 3 min, i've openned a finder window in 5 min, I'm trying to install onyx.dmg and I've clicked like 10 min ago and it's still loading. (( Btw I have the windows as well in another partition and everything is working fine there as it supossed to work. Was thinking to reinstall mac os from the disk but I don't have anything backed up! On the cd install says that I can reinstall mac os as duplicate and will put the old one in a separate folder or something but I still don't know if will erase all my data.
Whenever I open a file in 'Preview' (any kind of .PDF, .jpeg, etc.) it opens with 2 or 3 windows; the file that I just opened, and also the last 2 or 3 files that I looked at. Why is it doing this? I've looked through the Preview preferences and I can't find anything that sounds like this. How do I turn this off?

Time Machine on my iMac won't open iPhoto. It goes to desktop screen automatically. When I select User/Picture/Iphoto library it only brings up the preview page with the size of the folder. I can't get into the library to look for lost photos.
Every time I let my MBA go to sleep, the Mail app opens. I checked and it is not set to 'Open at Login'. Since installing Sparrow, I don't even use the Mail app anymore. This happens both when it sleeps after x minutes as well as when it is put to sleep via closing the computer.

Each time I launch Safari, iTunes launches. A clue: iTunes immediately goes to the store and brings up an app called SendStuffNow. This is a real pain. At one point I had downloaded the (free) app, but decided I didn't want it and deleted it.

I used Safari as my default browser. The language changes to Chinese every time I open a new tab, and I have to go to the bottom of the page to change the language back to English.
My mac is freezing all the time. I can't have more than three programs open at the same time, like forefox, word and spotify. If I do that, it crashes and have to turn it off with the power button. I have some big programs on it, like all the Adobe programs. The mac is just over a year old. It have a 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 processor, and have 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR 3 memory, also running iOS 10.9.4. I have 388,82 GB available of 499,25 GB.
I recently used time machine for the first time in a long time. I use my external HD USB for the backup. After the back up was complete, I unplugged the USB cable. I got an error that I needed to put the HD away first (I wasn't thinking). And I didn't pay attention to the error either.
I thought the data was gone, when I didnt see the data in the back up file. I do see the back up file with that date on it. In the file is the .InProgress file. In that file, on right clicking, I see the contents of one folder. This folder has a very long name of numbers and letters. It shows no contents in the finder. THough I know the files must be here. The HD has capacity of 100 Gig. There is only about 20 gigs showing on it. Though there is only 20 gigs available. So, my back up data is there on the HD, and I assume it's in this "empty" file.
