Intel Mac :: Time Machine Won't Open
Jul 5, 2012
When I try to open Time Machine nothing happens. I have a clone of my system but can't copy time machine to the applications folder because the system won't permit it because it is used by the OS. How do I restore time machine in OS X Lion. Tried the usual things like restarting.

Time Machine on my iMac won't open iPhoto. It goes to desktop screen automatically. When I select User/Picture/Iphoto library it only brings up the preview page with the size of the folder. I can't get into the library to look for lost photos.

After I had a full backup to iomega external hard drive I wanted to see photos in iPhoto library by using Time Machine. I can see the iPhoto Library icon on Time Machine, but when I click on an icon it does not open the folder and I can't see the pictures stored on iomega external hard drive. All other backed up documents I can see and restore if I need it.

On my MacBook I've had Time Machine backing up to an external USB hard drive for a good while now. At some point in the past, the interface to recover files has stopped working; I can click "Enter Time Machine" but literally nothing happens. No errors, no windows open, nothing. I've tried some things I found in other places to no avail, but most of them are associated with some kind of error code, which probably means that it isn't the same problem I have.

Has anyone ever had an issue with time machine not opening? I am trying to open the app to run a backup and it is not doing anything I can see, even in activity monitor? It did seem to be working fine, pop in a new external hard drive and it would ask if I wanted to use this drive? Ran it once saw how long it was going to take and cancelled. Now when it comes to wanting to use it the app will not open, has anyone has this issue, I am stuck?
Is there any alternative from running it from the terminal?

I recently used time machine for the first time in a long time. I use my external HD USB for the backup. After the back up was complete, I unplugged the USB cable. I got an error that I needed to put the HD away first (I wasn't thinking). And I didn't pay attention to the error either.
I thought the data was gone, when I didnt see the data in the back up file. I do see the back up file with that date on it. In the file is the .InProgress file. In that file, on right clicking, I see the contents of one folder. This folder has a very long name of numbers and letters. It shows no contents in the finder. THough I know the files must be here. The HD has capacity of 100 Gig. There is only about 20 gigs showing on it. Though there is only 20 gigs available. So, my back up data is there on the HD, and I assume it's in this "empty" file.
* How do I extract the saved files ?

I have an iMac running the latest version of Lion (10.7.4) and which I have upgraded to a one terabyte hard drive and full memory capability. I back up to a My Book 2 terabyte external hard drive using Time Machine. My iMac is often very sticky, though I've done most of the diagnostics I know of and preferences etc. are seemingly all OK and fcuk -fs gives a positive result! The Mac is often hard to wake from sleep and in particular seems to spend a lot of time backing up very-very slowly, with the result that it frustratingly seems to be backing up most of the time with the consequent effects on using other programs. Also the whole thing seems to grind to a halt after a hard days work with quite a few applications open. I'm wondering what can be causing this and what I can do to overcome this very frustrating and debilitating problem?

I upgraded my iMac to the new i5 and sold my 24" iMac. Before selling it, I backed everything up with Time Machine. I transferred everything to the i5 and I thought everything was working fine until I tried to open iWeb and it didn't work. If I move my domain file from the iWeb folder, iWeb opens fine and starts from scratch. When I check my website online it is still active as well. How can I get my original domain file to open within iWeb so all is not lost?

Macbook Pro (2012) hard drive died. Have full Time Machine backup on external hard drive. Installed new drive in the Macbook, installed Snow Leopard from original CD, and then did the upgrade to Yosemite. Connected the external drive with the TM archive and started Migration Assistant. It sees the TM archive drive and says "choose a volume from the list below" and does not present a list (which I presume would be a list of the TM backup dates). At this point there is no alternative to quitting Migration Assistant.Â
how to get my data out of the TM archive?

I have a 13in MacBook Pro Mid 2012 model with a 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 processor and 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 memory. I've got it new in the summer of 2012, and haven't had any real problems until now. I have a 1TB Hitachi external hard drive with over 600GB left of storage. I'm running Yosemite.Â
Lately, as in the past few weeks but more noticeably the past few days, I can't open files if I just double click on them from my desktop or from searching them outside of the application. For instance, if I click on a word document on my desktop, it will cause the work icon to bounce for a while, pretending to open, but it never does. If the application is already running, the file just won't open. If I search from the "open" selection within the application, it works fine. This is true for all of my Microsoft Office apps, Photoshop, Preview, iTunes, and everything in between, all of which I had never had a problem with before.Â
Next, anytime I try to backup my system using Time Machine, it simply shows the "Preparing Backup" status and never starts. I've had the hard drive and used it as a Time Machine since I got the computer, and have had zero problems at all.Â
I've tried CleanMyMac2, Memory Clean, and I've always kept my Mac very clean and organized, as in no duplicate files, moving my biggest files onto my hard drive, and deleting any of my unnecessary files. I know I don't have a ton of RAM left, but I'm honestly not completely sure what to do about that, as this model apparently doesn't have RAM updates available. I was trying to set up my Time Machine to an external hard drive. I didn't continue because it asked to "initialize" the hard drive which I had a lot of important things on.
I have another external hard drive I'd like to use but, my Time Machine has this error code of -43. What is this and how can I use my Time Machine on another external hard drive?

I have 2 drives on my iMac but only one is showing up..how can I get them both to back up? The one that is getting backed up is from my old laptop, and I really don't need it as most of the data is in my newer iMac drive. If necessary, I would like to switch the back up to the newer system.

I know this is a common issue and I've read all the other posts and tried everything, but time machine still won't back up. I need help figuring out if there's anything I can do, or if I need a bigger back up disk. If so, how big?Â
I have deleted old backups, excluded unnecessary files, and cleaned out folders. It says 157.46GB available of 159.7GB; but when it backs up it says it requires 188.30GB but only 157.46GB are available. Â

I am non-technical! Following many months of successful automatic back-ups to an external hard disc I find that Time Machine had failed to back-up data since October 2011 for no apparent reason that I am aware. The last file name on the backup hard disc had a file name of the date and time with a suffix '.inprogress' (though the little symbol in the top right corner of the screen did not indicate activity). I dragged and dropped this file in Trash and went through the 'Repair' process for the back-up disc though this process did not indicate that there was a fault with the backup disc. Then restarted the iMac and clicked on Start Backup Now. The process started as normal but after a few moments I got the message 'The Backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disc'. Again a '.inprogress' file was created on the backup hard drive. The backup hard disc is under 10% used.

I wanted a clean install of Lion, so I copied over my iTunes library, saved my Mail as an mbox file, and moved all of my critical files to an external drive. But I completely forgot to save my iPhoto library. I have been running Time Machine for almost a year and I see that I have the file still on my NAS but it says I don't have the permissions to open it up. I can only open Time Machine backups since I reinstalled Lion. I have kept the same machine name and, I believe, username. It did not create a different Time Machine backup--there are still the same three files for the three different computers I am running Time Machine on. Is there any way I can restore my iPhoto library from the old Time Machine backup?Â

I thought I could use a 1TB External drive to back up my 320GB startup disk, and use the rest of the empty 680GB for storage. However, Time Machine started taking up 600GB of spaceon the External drive! I was like "What the heck!?" So I put unwanted Time Machine Backups in the trash and emptied it. Nothing, they're stuck there now.Â
I'm planning on wiping the disk clean and starting over, but for future reference is there a proper way to delete Time Machine Backups? Surely there must be; (I mean, who would have known Time Machine would take up MORE SPACE than the drive it's backing up in the first place?
