View 4 RepliesI have changed my download directory to Downloads, but Firefox is still saving temporary files for helper apps (e.g. PDFs) on the Desktop! Does anyone know a work around for this? My nice clean desktop is filling up with junk!

View 4 Replies View RelatedI keep getting the "Startup Disk is almost full" error message even though I know I had plenty of available memory. After searching the forums here, I downloaded Cocktail and cleared the caches, logs, and temporary files. I made hidden files visible, and I found in /private/var/tmp tons of files have been written taking up every bit of available space, even after running Cocktail's chron. A sample filename is 476deede776c8. I deleted these files, rebooted my computer, and I had the space back. BUT, this morning, when I started up, the memory disappeared again and these type of files were again gobbling up my disk space.
I booted from the system install disk to run disk utility. It says my hard disk is fine, but I can't repair permissions. Something about no packets or invalid packets.
I just went through the motions again with Cocktail and deleted the over 5Gb of temporary files, and so far, so good, but what can I do to stop this from continuing to happen?
These problems started after trying to download some printer drivers from HP's website, which was so slow I halted the downloads and cancelled them. I tried installing the one driver that downloaded, and onto a different user than the root system, as per HP's recommendation. This meant I had to use the system install disk to reset my passwords because my password wasn't working. I don't know if any of these actions caused the problem, are part of the problem, or are a separate problem. I can't afford to spend an hour a day, 2 or 3 times a day, erasing these pesky files so I can use my boot drive. Any advice, specific directions, and/or explanations are desperately needed.
I am running Mac OS 10.3.9 on a PowerMac G4 450Mhz, 800Mb RAM. I was using Firefox when the problems started.
I've got networked clients logging in and occasionally having problems, especially with shared logons. I bet changing the location of temporary files from the home folder (on the server) to the local machine would fix a lot of issues.

this is going to sound silly and I hope I can explain it correctly, but when you click on the Macintosh HD icon and the window opens up, there is a list on the left side of the window. Down towards the bottom of this list, there is a folder titled: "Search For". Is there any way of clearing the Today, Yesterday, Past Week, All Images, All Movies and All Documents folders without actually deleting the files from my Mac?

I just recieved an external hard drive for Christmas, and so far have only put my videos and some other folders on the drive. I would like to put my itunes library on there, but have NO idea how to go about doing this.
I have an ipod (8g) and want to be able to still sync and not lose any of my songs during transfer. I actually have more APPS than I do music, but I just want to move all those files to the external drive to clear up space on my mac (Powerbook G4, 10.4.11).
My activity monitor says I'm suing 122.43 GB of virtual memory. I'm sure that the number is much, much less. But I would still like to reset the virtual memory.
Are there any terminal commands to rest the vm?

I recently purchased an iMac so I can do image capturing. I had previously been using a PC and moved to the Mac. The software I have been using has a Mac and PC version. When I do my projects, it saves a temporary image file to the User's Temp directory as a jpeg on the PC. I have attempted to contact the software developers to ask them where on the Mac it stores this file and they have not gotten back to me. I am curiously if anyone can point me in the direction of where to find this temporary image file. I realize that Mac's stored images as .png not jpeg but I am getting no response from the company's devolper and I use this file for my projects.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a large set of files I need to have transferred to me (about 7GB) and I need them before I leave for the holidays, so posting a high-density DVD won't work. I would like to set up my computer as a temporary FTP that my colleague could transfer the data to.I've set everything up according to most of the files I can find online. It's pretty straightforward, but my colleague still cannot connect to my machine.

I have neighbors that come over and use my wifi but then continue to use it when they return to their homes, is there anyway for me to allow them temporary access or create some kind of guest network that I could turn off when they leave? I HATE having to change the administrative password when they leave because I have to re-enter it on all of my devices.
View 1 Replies View RelatedYea, my friends find it quite hilarious to push the power button and then pressing enter really fast which results in my computer shutting down.
I was looking for an app that would make it so the power button would only work when caps lock is on or something similar. It's just really annoying.

View 5 Replies View RelatedHe "opened" a word document from yahoo email, saved it, but can't find it again.
I suspect the person saved the document in the temporary download folder, but can't find the path to it (found the hidden cache folder but that wasn't it). Anyone got any clue on where the document could be found?
Firefox has been my main browser b/c Safari 4 was slower for me and also no Noscript. Safari 5 though is noticable faster for me and I'd like to go back. Malicious javascript is still a concern, even if remote. I use clicktoflash, but that only blocks flash. Is there a plugin or extension that will block javascript on a page unless I allow it or whitelist it?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a 1TB drive in my Mac Pro running Mavericks 10.9.4 and I went to disk utility to erase some free space on the drive. However I keep getting the error message: Secure Erase Free Space failed Secure erase Free Space failed with the error: Couldn't create temporary file.
I Googled the error message and couldn't find anything. The error message is heaps unuseful, it doesn't tell me why it couldn't create a temporary file or what I can do to fix it.

I have created an automator workflow to remove and recreate my temporary directory in my home folder.
Is there a way to schedule this workflow to run at user login (or at boot time)?
I am not a newbie to computers so I am aware that temporary files (swap files) are par for the course. I also realize that when dealing with larger files (video, for example) swap files tend to grow larger. But I can't reconcile going from over 200 gb of available space to showing literally 0 bytes available in less than a half an hour. Granted, I am exporting a video from iMovie (about 2 hours) but to loose over 200 gb of available hard drive space to a swap file doesn't seem right. Is this really my swap file or is something else possibily going on here?

I am not the admin of the computer, but the admin gave me admin rights for a temporary time being, so when I went to login to my user it asked the question if i wanted to make some change or whatever, well appaerantly I clicked the wrong choice and i had the "Remember this choice" box clicked. So is there anyway to go back to change this?I have tried restarting and completely shutting down the comp, and taking admin rights off and putting them back on.

So I want to sell my Mac on ebay with many of the programs still installed.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI used to have a Macbook, but after two years the hard drive crash, I now have a pro. After getting the files that I needed back I went into my external hard drive that my old macbook backed up onto and tried to delete all of the old back ups so I could make room for my new computer to use. After deleting it one file is left in my trash can. It is an old back up from August and the file name ends with .inProgress.
I assume that I must have disconnected my computer or something while it was backing up, but now when I try to clear the trash it says "The operation can't be completed because the item "AGQ0qILU99QsKv" is in use." I have no idea what that item is, where it is because it doesnt show in the trash, or how to get rid of it. I have tried to secure empty trash and use a few terminal commands but nothing is working. Also it wont let me remove it from the trash. It just copies the file rather than moving it out.
