OS X :: Fonts In Some Pdf Files Have Been Changed Without Any Reason - Mac Has Been Hacked?
Nov 5, 2008
I just noticed that the fonts of some of the italicized words in a few pdf documents have been changed. This just happened suddenly for no reason. Does that mean my Mac has been hacked or Apple has changed something on the previewer (version 4.1, 469.2.2) which came with Leopard? I also noticed that the wireless network connection has been very slow for the past two days.

I'm having more problems with my new MAC than I ever did with any PC! I loaded new fonts onto my MAC today and now when I go into Safari and browse the internet, all of the fonts on any website I go into have been changed into some ridiculous font! Why would this happen and how do I restore the default font settings?

I assume this must have to do with my recent software update (installed today)
Now, when I open my email and many web pages - notably google, it seems as if the default viewing font has changed.. even the text on the "submit" buttons and things like that has changed...
and whats worse is the new font is barely legible. I don't have any idea what has happened or how to fix it... can someone please help, this is really annoying!

A friend passed on a G4 laptop with a very weird problem. My own mac will never be updated beyound 10.3, the version on this laptop looks like 10.4.
All system fonts have changed. Some windows are still okay, like About this Macintosh. As for the rest all are the same capital A with a square around it. I know OSX won't let a user change the system font like Classic did. I read Tinkertool most likely won't do the job. I verified and repaired the permissions. Tomorrow I'll try MacJanitor and Onyx. I'm not comfortable with the Terminal. I do not yet know if another user on this laptop, which isn't created yet, might have the same problem.
Any idea how to solve this? Ever heard of a similar problem?

All of a sudden I restarted my computer and the dock didn't show up and the fonts for the clock and battery were different. The widgets also would not show up. Also missing was some of the icons for random programs (applications, illustrator, pictures etc.) I am thinking I might have deleted some of the systems files? In safe mode the dock and widgets work and the fonts are correct however the icons are still missing.

MacBook Pro
13-inch, Mid 2009
Processor 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB
Software OS X 10.9.4 (13E28)
itunes version 11.3
160gb rotational hard drive w 75 GB free spaceÂ
my problem is that tv shows and movies downloaded from the iTunes store skips frames (stutters, pauses call it what you will) every 5 or 10 seconds while playing. The sound continues but the video stutters. The problem appears after watching for about 5 minutes, its fine until then, sometimes it gets a bit better but it never goes away. The movies are not HD, they're standard definition files.Â
I've tried many different movies and tv shows purchased from the iTunes store and its always the same.It happens in full screen and half size. It happens when i open the files in quicktime player as well. I have no other applications running while the problem happens. It does NOT happen when I put the files onto my girlfriend's iPad, they playback no problem.Â
This problem did not happen when I first purchased the laptop, it has only appeared in recent months. At first I thought it was a RAM issue as I only had 2gb of RAM so I upgraded to 8gb and while my computer is much faster in general the problem has not gone away at all, it's exactly the same. Then I thought it was because my hard drive was full, (which it was) so I cleared some space and now have 75gb free on a 160gb drive. Still skipping frames. It does not happen when I play video files not purchased from iTunes store in quicktime.Â

like to understand more about Fonts. I have these two files "/Users/buz/Library/Fonts Disabled/MS PGothic.ttf" "/_My Apps/ Microsoft Office 2004/Office/Fonts/MS PGothic.ttf"Â
Using a Duplicate Finder revealed numerous 'duplicated' fonts on my system, but I'm reluctant to engaging in a slash and burn strategy.Â

fonts must be messed up in Snow Leopard. Some system things display strange fonts. For example, my user name in upper right hand corner of the screen doesn't look right.ALso, the font on the "tabs," in Safari is not correct, and I can compare it to other SL computers.

After every reboot or restart, I just started seeing a new file named "Recovered files" in the trash containing fonts. All fonts in there are system fonts. I remember this happening in OS9 but I never had this in OSX before. I close all apps before shutting down.OSX 10.5.8 Dual 2.3 GHz PPC G5 5 GB DDR2 SDRAM NVIVIA GeForce 6600 256 VRAM

I am looking for a backup solution other than Time Machine to back up files incrementally to an external drive. I like the concept of TimeMachine and would like to use it; however, I have significant work that must be accessible to PC sys/appl, so I cannot format it apple-journaled (FAT32 appears best r/w solution for multi-platform). AppleCare advised there is no other incremental solution than that, and thus they don't have a solution I "search the web". Discouraging news for a recent migrator.

Last night I changed my home's name from "totoduong" to "Home" and it made seem like I lost everything.Currently "totoduong" has nothing, and "Home" has everything but in a folder.I checked another thread back in 2006, that said to change the name back to what it was. I am not clear how to do that in order to fix it.

Stupid I know, but I saw my 'home' file was named root and for some reason thought it should be Home so I tried to change it.Meanwhile about half an hour later I had a power cut. On rebooting the computer, it logs me in to a default user with default settings.I know many people have done this before and I've been searching the net all day trying to do everything they say. The main difference is, the name wasn't changed and is still root therefore there is no 'old' file somewhere called home with all my files in that I can just swap over or change the name back to what it was before as most people seem to have been able to do.

My girlfriend changed the user's name and the problems started (iMac wouldn't remeber system settings and denied access to some files and catalogs). When I wanted to fix the problem I probably made a mistake and changed the access settings of some files (finally even hard disk's settings). After this action my iMac doesn't start (the screen is white with the apple logo and nothing happens). Is there anybody who knows what to do now?

San Francisco - It may be the quickest $10,000 Charlie Miller ever earned. He took the first of three laptop computers -- and a $10,000 cash prize -- Thursday after breaking into a MacBook Air at the CanSecWest security conference's PWN 2 OWN hacking contest.Show organizers offered a Sony Vaio, Fujitsu U810, and the MacBook as prizes, saying that they could be won by anybody at the show who could find a way to hack into each of them and read the contents of a file on the system using a previously undisclosed "0day" attack.
Nobody was able to hack into the systems on the first day of the contest when contestants were only allowed to attack the computers over the network, but on Thursday, the rules were relaxed so that attackers could direct contest organizers using the computers to do things like visit Web sites or open e-mail messages.Miller, best known as one of the researchers who first hacked Apple's iPhone last year, didn't take much time. Within 2 minutes, he directed the contest's organizers to visit a Web site that contained his exploit code, which then allowed him to seize control of the computer, as about 20 onlookers cheered him on.
He was the first contestant to attempt an attack on any of the systems.Miller was quickly given a nondisclosure agreement to sign, and he's not allowed to discuss particulars of his bug until the contest's sponsor, TippingPoint, can notify the vendor.Contest rules state that Miller could only take advantage of software that was preinstalled on the Mac, so the flaw he exploited must have been accessible by, or possibly inside, Apple's Safari browser.Last year's contest winner, Dino Dai Zovi, exploited a vulnerability in QuickTime to take home the prize.Dai Zovi, who congratulated Miller after his hack, didn't participate in this year's contest, saying it was time for someone else to win.

have i been hacked/phished? i clicked on a link in an email from an old friend and apparently, his email was hacked into because the link was to some spam website offering exorbitant amounts of money off the internet. every time i tried to close the window, a drop down menu would appear asking me if i wanted to leave the page. the page didn't let me close it until i clicked "yes". is my computer safe? perhaps a dumb move, but i thought the link was safe because i recognized other friends' email addresses it was sent to and the email came from a friend ! do i need to worry about a key logger or any of my accounts being compromised? maybe i'm not doing the right kind of searches but i can't seem to find anything on the internet about macs and security. is there some sort of anti-virus or anti-malware software, etc, for macs?

I know you can change admin passwords by just pressing the power button and command s... my brother always changes my password and I physically have to hide my computer so he won't hack it. I know people use firevault to protect files but I don't need to do that. Are there any settings I can change or software I can install to prevent hacking?
