I went into root account and changed the name on my home file and now when I open all my files file in finder it is blank everything else seems to be ok don't know what to do about it

One of my friends just called me, saying he changed the name of his home folder, and after a restart, everything is gone.
I've never done this, and I don't know what to do to fix it. Quick googling has come up with nothing useful.
He's got an album that he just recorded, which isn't backed up, and so he's pretty distraugh.
Anyway, one of my home folders for a user account has gone missing. when you are logged into the account it belongs to you can navigate to it via finder. However you cannot see the folder via finder from any other account. This account is NOT an admin. I had this problem when I was running tiger and it still remains now that I have leopard. 2Ghz INtel core 2 duo Aluminum iMac.

I am not clear how to do that in order to fix it.
View 3 Replies View RelatedStupid I know, but I saw my 'home' file was named root and for some reason thought it should be Home so I tried to change it.Meanwhile about half an hour later I had a power cut. On rebooting the computer, it logs me in to a default user with default settings.I know many people have done this before and I've been searching the net all day trying to do everything they say. The main difference is, the name wasn't changed and is still root therefore there is no 'old' file somewhere called home with all my files in that I can just swap over or change the name back to what it was before as most people seem to have been able to do.

I had to reconfigure iTunes, Firefox and Camino both fail to start and not to mention other applications not being able to find my/their stuff. When I open Finder on my iMac, then click on my user name in the sidebar, I am not seeing the Library folder for my user name. I need to modify some of the application support folders for specific applications, but I cannot find them using Finder. These folders are specific to my user name and are not located within the Macintosh HD/Library folder for the entire computer.
They should be in the path Macintosh HD/Users/[my username]/Library/Application Support/[application name].
But for some reason, the "Library" folder doesn't even show up in Finder when I click on Macintosh HD/Users/[my username]. It's visible when I open one of the applications and use preferences to access folders in the application support folder for that application, but not when trying to get to the same location using Finder -- which I need to do in order to copy and paste some of the files.

i copied a user folder from my old windows machine it was a ntfs hard dive to my dekstop. I can see the folder structure and the folder took a while to copy over but there are not files in the folders. They seem to be hidden?

The search results I am getting do not include all the files that meet my search criteria. For example, I am looking through photo files for any files with "34" in the name. Some files show up, but not all of them. See screenshot. I am searching in the "Branded Photoshoot" folder, and I am getting some results (Branded Photoshoot/Hilton Universal/IMG_1434), but another file that is in folder, though a different subfolder, (Branded Photoshoot/Architectural Center/IMG_1534) is NOT showing up. What is causing that subfolder and its files to not be included in the search results?

My blue 1TB external WD Passport Drive (whose name is Ralph and who holds all kinds of precious things that I love and can't lose) isn't showing up on my Finder screen. Whenever I connect him, his light turns up and blinks as usual, but I can't access anything on him. I don't even get an error message when I disconnect him without ejecting. I've tried using different USB ports and different cables, but it's not working. I've also tried connecting him to different computers (3 different macs and 1 Windows 8 PC), but NOTHING.Â
I've been trying everything the past few days to get him to work. He shows up on Disk Utility occasionally. I've tried verifying and repairing him through Disk Utility, but it says that the verification could not be completed, or that it can't repair him. It tells me to back up as many files as I can and then restore him, but I can't access the files to back them up in the first place. Also, the partition name seems to have changed to 'disk1s3', which appears greyed out on the Disk Utility screen.Â
In regards to mount point, it says that the disk isn't mounted. I tried mounting it by right-clicking it on Disk Utility, but the mount failed. I tried restoring him onto another 1TB WD drive (Oscar), but that failed too.

I don't like the way that finder arranges my files and folders. I have tried all the arrangements and none of them "flow" for me. What I would like to do is to be able to put my files / folders where I want them. I like to group similar folders together and put the most important files/folders at the top. Now this isn't an exhaustive list of how I want to arrange them. Its more about where my eyes go and what I want to see. I am a new mac user so maybe this is a really simple fix that I don't know about.Â

I accidentally removed the "Downloads" folder icon from my OS10 dock, and when I restored it there, it had changed to an icon of a PDF notebook. When opened, the stack shows only PDFs. What happened? How do I restore it to a regular Downloads folder in the dock?

I recently noticed that there was an application folder in my home folder (the folder with your username), but that application folder had been empty. I remember I used to be able to access to my applications from that folder, but not anymore.Â
Since the folder was empty, I deleted it before doing further research.Â
After deleting the empty application folder from the home folder, I looked up and some said the application folder in the home folder and the application folder in Macintosh HD are two different folders. I don't know what it means, but I would like to have an application folder with applications in my home folder. Is this possible? or should I just make an Alias folder and put it in my home folder?

I know the Home Folder short name changing issue has been discussed already on here, and most people seem to advise either against it or to backup before proceeding. I just obtained my first MacBook Pro second hand, and it still has the previous owner's Home Folder and Short Name, even though he has deleted all his files from it, and there's only pretty much standard folders within it (Library, Applications), but nothing in them. I've been saving my own stuff elsewhere in another folder I created on the Mac HD drive. Is it fairly safe then to change his name over to my own following the steps on the Apple website, or would his home still be attached to certain important components? I'd rather not create a brand new account where I have to fiddle with settings again for everything, though I'm not sure if I may have to do that anyway. I'm using Leopard, by the way. The login he passed on at start-up still says administrator as a user name, though, not his shortname. Will that change also?

However I have seen it because after converting samples Logic showed me the folder and its contents. I would very much like to move the samples from their present location in this folder on the startup disk to the EXS 24 samples folder on the external RAID array that is dedicated to this purpose - - but I don't know how to make the Library folder visible.

Drive still accepts and ejects discs as usual. Problem happens with all kinds of discs, CDs and DVDs.
I even tried replacing the drive with a brand new one, still nothing showing in finder.

Also one of the steps is to just rename your home folder which it will not allow me to do.
