OS X :: Firefox Using Over 500MB Memory?
Sep 4, 2009I just updated my Unibody 15" MBP (only 2GB RAM) and now firefox is consistently using over 500MB of memory. It really seems to be clogging things up. Anyone else seeing this?

View 24 RepliesI saw a thread the other day that alluded that Chrome or FF were memory hogs vs Safari. I have FF on my iMac and like it fairly well, my wife really prefers it. I have not installed it on my MBA because of the comments that I read the other day. It seemed like someone also posted Chrome was almost or as bad. There have been some spirited threads on how to keep our Airs running at top efficiency, going both easy on the RAM and on the battery life. The general consensus amongst members is Flash with a Flash filter plugin such as ClickToFlash battery life. If a browser is a memory hog will it also hasten the battery's discharge or just sap your RAM? Or would the user never really notice the difference unless they were tunnel visioned on their system monitor whilst surfing the web?
View 23 Replies View RelatedI'm currently using the Firefox 3.5 Beta4 version and it's a damn memory hog. It uses 600MB after a half an hour of browsing unless I restart it. Is this normal, or is there something wrong with my computer?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI'm working on a video project in which it is necessary to send large chunks of video back and forth (500mb up to 4gb). So far, we've been using iDisk, and it's painful. It's dreadfully slow and times out occasionally. Is there a way to simply connect to each others Mac using Leopard? If we have the ISP information? I'm new at this, so I'm not too sure of what information we'd need.

It claims over 400MB/sec write and over 500MB/sec read.
Is that possible with TWO eSATA connection transfer rate over 500MB/sec read ?
Any one experience this?
If I use this enclosure to convert M2TS to MP4/MKV file, would that give me any improvement?
i know safari is default cuz its apple and all.. but what do you guys have as a separate option:
Google Chrome
Firefox 3.5
Firefox 4 Beta
Opera
Just safari
just curious.. wanting to put a browser but not too sure. (on my desktop PC, i have firefox 4), but i would like to know
the Firefox addons on Mozilla's website work on OSX when using Firefox? I just wanted to make sure since I like using all of the apps on my firefox configuration and was thinking about buying a mac. I know a lot of 3rd party apps that aren't specifically made for Mac at times will not work
View 1 Replies View RelatedI don't like Firefox 11 one bit and am yearning for 3.6. I read online to drag firefox 11 to trash and that, of course did nothing to actually uninstall. I then dowloaded 3.6 and 'installed' that, restarted but still firefox 11 lives on in my computer.

I have a iMac DV G3/500 (Special Edition) from summer 2000. Anyway, I am using Mac OS 10.2.8. Recently, my start up disk's memory has gone done from 1.2 GB available free space to 668MB (currently). I haven't saved anything on this disk so I can not understand why this memory has dissappeared. I have also had icons on the start up menu disappear. Could someone please tell me how I can restore the missing memory?
I have a Black MacBook (Early 2008). I think that I still have the factory standard RAM sticks (I bought the Mac used from a friend). I noticed today that I am running on only one gig of RAM even though I have two gigs of memory.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just bought a early 2009 MAC Pro and it came with 3GB of RAM, I ordered 3 2GB sticks of memory to replace the 3 1GB sticks that I had in there from Kingston. I turned off the unit, I popped the little levers and pulled the memory out of slot 1, 2, 3 and then replaced the memory with the new Kingston in slot 1, 2, 3
One of the sticks in is not working at all and I get the RED LED light no matter what slot I move that chip to. So I am running on 2 of the new Kingston memory chips.
Can I mix the memory and add the 1GB into slot 3 and 4 with slot 1 and 2 full of 2GB chips?
Also how to I run the memory utility again? I went to /system/Library/CoreServices/ and then I see the program Memory Slot Utility.app
How do I run this? I'm used to no spaces and I type ./then program name
I've just updated the os to 10.6.2 and my 16gb mac pro 1,1 only shows 8gb in the system profiler. The memory tab shows they're all working correctly but size says "2gb" where should be "4gb".

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm new to mac and I've noticed that I can have 2 gigs of memory one day and the next I'm down to 24 or something!I've noticed that if I open a file in Itunes and then change the info that there are now 2 files in the finder, one with the old info and the new with the new metadata. Why does OS-X do that?!
Also, if I have 1 gig of memory left (out of 180 or so) why does it disappear to 0 if I open photoshop? I'm used to a PC running virtual memory and CPU but why does the Mac actually take away my available memory?I'm at my wits end here, it's been driving me up the wall for weeks!
A copy of Firefox is already open. Only one copy of Firefox can be open at a time. Understand I am a novice user compaired to most so, here is what I've done so far. Deleted FF in Apps. (trashed)Deleted FF profile (trashed)Attempted stoping any process in the activity monitor(nothing there)Force quit FF (nothing there) Searched every place I can think of for any file named Firefox or Mozilla with no results.cannot find anything in a "profile" that looks FF related Tried re-downloading FF and re-installing(same error prompt) Tried restarting the comp I made the switch to Apple this year because owners and users of Mac seem to very proud of their product, so does Mac according to the price.

I made a simple test by opening same webpages with firefox and safari.facebook, gmail, apple start page and an internet newspaper...in activity monitor safari was using 270 mb of memory versus 170 of firefox... on a clean reboot...before after using safari for a while.. kept the open pages and reopened them in firefox.. it was safari 550 mb vs. firefox 250 mb

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am trying to run firefox from a USB stick, but have come across a few issues. I recently lost a computer so I want to make sure that my online banking and other password kind of stuff/shopping is done without leaving any trace on my hard drive.
My first question is: Is it possible to protect myself in this way? I really don't understand the ins and outs of this, but I want to avoid leaving passwords etc on my hard drive. I am looking into ironkey since it was advertised here, but as I won't be moving the USB out of my home, I figured just running the app from my USB would be ok for now.
When running firefox, I can only get to a website by googling it, not by putting the address in the address bar.
I have tried to copy text from a site, but it only gives me the options to 'save image as' but when clicked, nothing else happens. The same is true for photos.
I've never been much of a Firefox fan. I think it feels too much like a Windows app, it's not as integrated into OS X as Safari and, in my opinion, it hasn't been as fast as Safari. I have to give it props for having add-ons and extensions but it creates a lot of security problems and conflicts with other extensions. I don't understand why so many people like Firefox so I just want to ask: Why do all of you like Firefox?

View 3 Replies View RelatedIt's called Google Desktop. It's an old version (1.1) that doesn't work and I've been trying to get rid of it for ages. Whenever I uninstall, it says it will be deleted when Firefox restarts, but it doesn't; when it restarts, it says 1 new add-on has been installed, and it's Google Desktop! I've even tried going into my Firefox profile folder's Extensions folder in ~/Library/Application Support/Mozilla and deleting all the add-ons, but the Google Desktop one reappears the second I open Firefox!

View 1 Replies View RelatedFor example, two I *really* depend upon are FireFTP and Google Toolbar.
Some I find really handy are Web Developer, Fangs, ForecastFox, Download Statusbar, and Google Notebook.
I have a load of others I use, but I suppose I could manage without them. Just curious.

I use the latest version of Firefox on an XP machine. I want to transfer my Firefox bookmarks, profile, etc. to a machine running Mac OS 10.3
Are there any snags to look out for since Mac OS 10.3 is a somewhat older operating system?
I have been having this problem for over two weeks on my iMac 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, running 10.6.6. I am running FF 3.6.12 and Thunderbird 3.1. I mention Thunderbird, because the persistent request to install fonts occurs on both apps, not just FF. Clicking "Do not ask me again," has no effect.
The odd thing is the requests in both apps want to install on the volume "NEON," which is my SuperDuper (bootable) backup drive, and should contain all the fonts that are on my boot drive.
I have tried the tricks suggested for FontBook (move all User Fonts to the Computer Fonts ?), with no change in behavior. With some difficulty, I did install the fonts being asked for on both volumes, with the result that Firefox and Thunderbird began asking to install a new set of completely different fonts, although fewer in number that when the problem began.
I recently arrived at college and when you join the wifi network (and through ethernet) you have to register your computer. I did this at orientation and everything worked fine. Once I got here I had to reregister (maybe they reset something in the system, so I don't think its a big deal but youre supposed to only have to register every 12 months).
I believe what happened is I opened Safari and I registered over Wifi and ethernet. And then nothing would load while I was on wifi, but Skype would work (but I've noticed that the Pandora One app won't load, but I'm not going to worry about that, at least for now. I can use the website).
So after like an hour chatting with tech support, resetting Safari, restarting, trying Chrome, I go in to the library where tech support is.
