Applications :: Firefox 3.5 Beta 4 Version - Memory Hog?
May 18, 2009
I'm currently using the Firefox 3.5 Beta4 version and it's a damn memory hog. It uses 600MB after a half an hour of browsing unless I restart it. Is this normal, or is there something wrong with my computer?

I've been using Safari 5 since it came out but decided I give the new FireFox Beta 4 a look see. Here's what I got after the install. I looked at the toolbar customization but I don't see how to correct this.

I don't know about you guys but I am excited! This new version supports Exchange 2007 SP1 with Rollup 4 or later natively! Autodiscovery, Tasks sync, notes sync and categories sync is also fully supported. The best thing is that when ready it will be available to all Entourage customers for free (Standard or Media Edition of Office)
http://www.officeformac.com/.59b6a217
"Say hello to Exchange Web Services; The future of Entourage!
I'm excited to tell you about the future for Entourage connectivity to Exchange Server! We've transitioned away from WebDAV, and today we are announcing the public beta of the Entourage for Exchange Web Services client. With this new client, not only are we taking advantage of the Exchange Web Services connectivity, but we are also delivering some new user features such as:
* Tasks, Notes, and Categories now sync with the Exchange Server
* Resolving names against the Global Address List now works via EWS/HTTP. This means you no longer need to be connected to your corporate network via VPN to resolve names when addressing an e-mail or meeting invitation
* Improved Autodiscover. In Entourage for Exchange Web Services Beta, the Autodiscover service keeps user account settings up-to-date after the account setup.
- It runs in the background every time that you start Entourage.
- It also runs at a server-defined interval, typically every hour, to make sure that the Exchange Server settings are always kept up-to-date"
You will need to register to get the new beta. Acceptance to the beta can take up to 48 hours..I am still waiting to be accepted to the beta. I cant wait..
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/itpros/entourage-ews.mspx
It is not a new Entourage but a client that runs as a daemon on Mac every time Entourage starts!

This is the weirdest thing, Firefox sometimes crashes when I press +Q to quit it. I cannot figure out what is causing the crashes, but it occurs most frequently on the site [URL] where xxxx are 4 digits I can't seem to remember (KoLmafia's relay browser). Most of the time it does not crash. The few times it does, it always does it on quit.

Curious, besides FF3 being newer, looking slicker. What are the other advantages of upgrading? Cause I'm still using FF2.0.0.20 and other than the odd crash, it seems fine.

My add-ons are all installed, and enabled, but most are not working. The plugins are all just gone, such as flash. I installed flash again, restarted, and it still doesn't have flash.

While the first two beta releases of Apple's Mac OS X 10.5.8 Leopard update signaled a focus on underlying service technologies, a third pre-release made available to developers overnight expands upon those areas to include several forward-facing apps and additional frameworks. People familiar with the beta, labeled Mac OS X 10.5.8 build 9L16, say the Mac maker has for the time being tabled its focus on components such as Bluetooth, Automator, graphics drivers, iDisk syncing, Spotlight and Sync services.

I like Safari's U.I. very much, but, everytime I load around 5 pages at the same time it starts to freeze and give me the rainbow circle on the mouse pointer. If I open the same sites with Camino everything works great and even faster than Safari.
I do not want to quite switch to Camino, because its UI is ugly, but its really superior to Safari on speed terms and has the same compatibility as Firefox, because its Gecko engine (?).
I will miss Top Sites and Safari's UI so much
How your Safari works? Is it fast and freeze free?

My Firefox asked if I wanted to install updated system plug-ins. I closed the browser, drug the install to my Applications folder, and now there's a copy in there as well as a Firefox ejectable icon on my desktop. I don't know where to go from here.

I still have my older Mac OsXv10.4 Tiger software. I wasn't exactly happy with Safari browser as it would block many sites and were considered incompatible so I downloaded the free Firefox browser (the 2.0 version) of which I still have. I'm aware that there is a much newer version and would like to download that, but I've heard a lot of people saying they have been having severe problems with it, but then they have PCs and not Macs. So my question is for you Mac users that use Firefox, have you had major problems with the newer version? I'm real hesitant to download if I'm going to have the same problem PC users are having...like constantly crashing. Also would my old Tiger software be compatible? I don't want to upgrade to Leopard.

I love osx leopard with just a few exceptions. I hate the ugly gray menu and title bar colors.
I found a utility to change the menu bar color (LeoColorBar) and was able to change the menu bar color to match my firefox theme, (Aeon Clouds 2.9.1).
It would be great to change the firefox title bar as well. Do you know of any utility or terminal command that would make this possible? I use the latest version of firefox, 3.0.3.

It seems like every other version of Firefox is not capable of displaying PDFs. I went to the Firefox website and found many others looking for a solution but no answers. Because people at this site are so much smarter, I thought I would ask here. I tried this, no joy.[URL]..

I saw a thread the other day that alluded that Chrome or FF were memory hogs vs Safari. I have FF on my iMac and like it fairly well, my wife really prefers it. I have not installed it on my MBA because of the comments that I read the other day. It seemed like someone also posted Chrome was almost or as bad. There have been some spirited threads on how to keep our Airs running at top efficiency, going both easy on the RAM and on the battery life. The general consensus amongst members is Flash with a Flash filter plugin such as ClickToFlash battery life. If a browser is a memory hog will it also hasten the battery's discharge or just sap your RAM? Or would the user never really notice the difference unless they were tunnel visioned on their system monitor whilst surfing the web?

In order to install Windows 7 via bootcamp, do you have to use the full version of windows or can you use the upgrade disc to install? I figured I should ask before buying another license as I have an upgrade version of Windows 7 Pro that I don't use. I do own previous versions of Windows (all of them....just like I do Mac OS).

I accidentally updated MacFuse from 2.0.3 to 2.1.5 beta (was checking if there was a new beta version, went to uncheck "Show Beta Version" and stupidly clicked "install" instead). I can't remember if 2.1.5 beta was a "safe" release of MacFuse. I was checking for updates as I am going to rebuild the Windows install on my MBP and am now worried that 2.1.5 might cause issues. Is 2.1.5 beta "stable"? If not, is it possible to downgrade back to 2.0.3? I've read in a few random posts around the internets that say its not a good idea to do this.If I uncheck the "Show Beta Version" box, MacFuse wants to "update" from 2.1.5 to 2.0.3. Guessing that would be a very bad idea?

Seems Glimmerblocker isn't working with the beta release of Safari 4. Anyone have any luck blocking ads? Also, I'd love to block flash. The inability to block flash is probably the main reason I could never use Safari full time. The browser looks amazing and is very snappy, but alas.... I need plugin support.

I'm using Safari 4 beta and it keeps crashing after no longer than one minute of use. I have deleted the plist, reset Safari, uninstalled and reinstalled, used multiple users, and no luck. I've been using it since it first came out with no problems until now. I did a search but all the threads I saw were about Safari 3 and none of them had a solution that worked yet.

I'm running 10.4.11, and each time I run the software updater, go through all the stages...download, install, restart etc... I open the software updater again, and the update is there again waiting to be installed!
This update is that recent Safari 4 one. I've repaired permissions and tried again, but had the same result. Any ideas for a perplexed mac user?
