1) my desktop items are invisible including HD, cds, memory sticks etc
2) i'm unable to access finder
3) i'm unable to open folders (library, pictures, music) unless using an already open application (pictures in safari)
4) i'm unable to use apple/top toolbar unless application is open
Woke up this morning late, so I didn't check the weather online like I usually do. Unplugged everything from my MBP (including an external display) while it was still asleep, tossed it in my back after it slept again, and headed out the door. When I got to class, all of my desktop items are gone. Macintosh HD, mounted dmg's, some files, and some other things are all gone off my desktop. They obviously still exist and I can open them from Finder
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am on OX 10.4.1.1 I think or maybe just 10.4.1 I know that some corrupted files got on my desktop and its preventing me from accessing my desktop but I can still get applications to run, I tried removing the files using Terminal but when I do so it says Access Denied. This is my computer and there are no other users on this. I believe I backed up all my files to an External a few days before, how to get finder to load properly so I can delete the corrupted files or know another way to get the files to the trash since I cannot see them.

I usually keep my desktop empty and use it to store stuff I'm going to process in the next hour anyway.
Sometimes my desktop is absolutely empty, but when I navigate to the following path: UserDesktop, the files do show up.
When my hard-drive crashed.. Is there any way to recover them?

View 1 Replies View RelatedUnfortunately the logic board of my (late 2011) MacBook Pro died. Luckily it was an old unibody model, so I could move my SSD to a similar (albeit older, mid-2009) model and booting up my installation went fine.Â
The only problem I am facing is that I seem to have lost all items in the Local Items keychain, this includes all my Apple Mail passwords and a lot of passwords I entered in Safari. These were very long passwords I generated to be automatically used when needed, for security.Â
It seems that the Local Items keychain is not a .keychain file, but a directory with a SQLite database which is used when iCloud Keychain is disabled. Apparently it just created a new directory with an empty Local Items keychain instead of using the existing one. The name of the directory seems to be an unique ID related to the hardware I'm using.Â
I have already tried to rename my old keychain directory to the UUID of the new one and rebooting, but then it simply renames the user.kb file to user.kb-invalid and starts out with an empty keychain again. I cannot imagine that you always lose all your passwords like this every time your hardware goes defective? I still have the data stored in the login.keychain file, but since I have used Mavericks it apparently does not store all passwords there anymore.Â
how I can migrate the passwords from my old Local Items keychain to the new one?
I couldn't find any resolve from anyone on this topic in older forums, but I have the folder generated and backed up on my iMac and my backup drive, a DROBO. I managed to get rid of the lost+found items on the iMac, but the DROBO says "The operation can�t be completed because the item �dir_1558208� is in use." as well as the rest of the contents.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded to a Apple 10.4.11. I have this annoying problem I can't figure out. With my previous Mac, I could put anything on my desktop anywhere I wanted. For some reason, on this desktop, there only seem to be a limited number of "slots." By slots, I mean each item can only be placed on a specific place and there is a specific amount of space between and around each item. Once these are used up, any additional items pile on top of each other. It looks like I have five rows of six items each (you name it, pictures, Word documents, Excel documents, etc.) I hate this. I want to be able to put or move anything anywhere I want. How do I fix this?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI frequently want to grab a ton of junk on say my desktop and sort them into folders. Process is "make new folder, select all the items I want to go in it, drag them to it, name folder, move folder to where I want". What I want it to be able to do is select all those items and have a contextual menu command "Make New folder from selected". Ideally, popping up an Open/Save dialog letting me choose where to put the new folder and allowing me to name it. On closing dialog, I have my new renamed folder with all my selected stuff in it, wherever I want on my HD with no extra dragging and clicking. Does this sound worthwhile to anyone else? Am I missing some way that this can be done? Seemed like an obvious thing to me, was kind of puzzled to discover (AFAIK) no way to do it.

Is there any way to have an item appear where I release the drag-and-drop, or will the dragged item always go to the right side of the desktop?
Another question: is there any way to select a bunch of mail messages and drag them into a folder. I know you can do it where all the emails get merged into one text file, but is there a way to keep them all as individual emails with a group drag and drop?
I have a Mac OS X version 10.5.8, one of the 2008 black/white models. Yesterday, I was messing around with my computer because the hard drive will not show up in the finder (I already did the system preferences, doesn't work). However, I guess I must have deleted something because when I restarted my computer, the menu bar blinks in and out unless i get onto safari but I can't get into finder at all. Also, All of my items on my desk top are gone. And I can't get into Itunes (file locked, on a locked disk, or do not have written permission to enter it)
I'm assuming this means I need to take it in and get it fixed. But I wanted to see if I can do anything to avoid that because I am in college and have a paper every week so I pretty much live off of my computer.
I don't usually turn off my MB, only when I need to bring to school then it's off. Well, when turn it back on, the items on desktop are not in the same place, I have to rearrange them. Preferences are set.
View 4 Replies View RelatedRe: Burning Desktop files and documents to a DVD - iMac - Lion. According to the "Help" feature, I put in a blank DVD and selected Finder as I was asked to do. I tried to move some files into the blank DVD window from my Desktop. But I could only move ONE file into the blank DVD window. It would NOT let me move any more files into the blank DVD window after moved the first one in. Why is that?  Â
The "Help" featuer said I could move in my files and documents one at a time and them burn them all on the DVD. This is what did for years on my older iMac with Panther.Â

Is there a way to see the number of items in a folder shown in finder?
Seems to me that in earlier versions, if you had a folder with 100 items (e.g., photos) in a folder in a finder window, when you clicked on the folder, something like "100 Items" would appear at the bottom of the finder window. I don't see this now in Lion.

Often I need to select multiple separate items from a large folder of them; I use list view, and command-click on each item, and then drag the whole batch to the appropriate location. It appears that in Snow Leopard (unlike previous OS X versions), when if I scroll down the list to select further items, it jumps back to the top-most selected item after a couple seconds. This makes it completely impossible to select further items! Is there a preference to turn this "function" off? Why would anyone want such a thing? Even if it is what the Finder is meant to do, it seems implemented poorly, since if I grab the scrollbar slider and drag it down below my selected items, after the couple seconds the view jumps back to the topmost item, but the slider doesn't move. All it all, it feels like a glitch.
