OS X :: Finder Bug - How To Replicate

Jan 25, 2009

This has been around for a while, and is something that really irritates me. It happens on odd occasions too, so not sure how to replicate it.

Anyway, this is what happens. Say I'm browsing in Safari, I'll be unable to click on my desktop. Only way to be able to do access Finder is to CMD+Tab to it then it all works fine.

It'll happen in any application and on odd occasions - sometimes I'll open a folder in Finder, then go back to another application and I can't click on that folder or on the desktop. It'll just remain in the application.

This has happened consistently throughout Leopard and isn't specific to me - my previous gen MBP did this, and on a fresh Leopard install it happens randomly.

MacBook Pro :: Replicate Sounding From MBP?

Dec 11, 2010

So I was just browsing the internet one day on my MBP. I bought it this summer before school started.

Now, this weird static scratching sound came from the upper left corner when I lifted the computer up. It also happened when it wasn't plugged in and it happened when it was plugged in. It's also happened with minimal movement.

Do you have any ideas what this could be?

I haven't been able to replicate the sound forcefully since it's really random.

What should I do?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Replicate Easy Photo View/editing Of Windows?

Jun 25, 2012

I switched a few months ago from a Windows XP machine to a Mac Air running Lion. I've searched for the answers to these questions but they are too general to search for here or in the App Store, so I'll try submitting a big question.

On my Windows XP laptop, I could insert my camera's SD card, quickly view each photo in a preview pane, rename it quickly in the same window and delete from the same window. This allows you to quickly go through many versions of the same photo, rename the one you want to keep and delete the rest. When finished, you only need to drop and drag the ones you want to keep into whatever folder you want.

There isn't an easy option with OSX, is there? I want to view and rename them while on the SD card, then transport them where I want. Loading into iPhoto is clunky and I'm losing track of where the different versions are. Opening them in Preview doesn't allow me to quickly and easily rename and delete them (though you can toggle back and forth and eventually do this).

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Cannot Open Finder Window And Finder Preferences Don't Stick

Apr 5, 2012

Sometimes I simply cannot open a new finder window. If I use Command-N or if I choose New Finder Window in the Finder menu, nothing happens. If I am using Command-N, I can see the File heading in the Finder menu bar highlighting, and then after a few seconds the highlight goes, but no window opens. Also, clicking on my Downloads icon in the dock, the dialog opens showing all the files, but if I then click on Open in Finder, the dialog closes but nothing happens. Now that I am writing this message, it all works again! That's what I mean by 'sometimes'. This issue can last for tens of minutes. Secndly, and this is still a problem, my finder Preferences do not stick. So for instance, I don't want to see an icon for my hard disk on the desktop, so I untick this in Finder preferences. The icon disappears. If I now re-start, then it comes back. The same happens for removing the empty trash warning and all of the other Finder Preference tick boxes.

Now, when the first problem of not being able to open a finder window suddenly stopped being a problem, the icon for the hard disk suddenly appeared on my desktop. So the two issues are linked. This has been going on intermittently for a few days. I have verified my disk, and repaired permissions.

I upgraded my MacBook Pro quad core 2.5 from Lion to Mavericks. Since then I get a LOT of beachballs when I'm using Finder. I repaired permissions, deleted com.apple.finder.plist (twice) and finally reinstalled Mavericks over the first one. Still painfully slow and lots of beachballs.

OS X :: Finder Icon Missing / Finder Became Invisible After Relauncing The Dock

Oct 1, 2009

Today I tried to change the finder icon in the dock. Because I'm cheap, I dont have candybar, so I tried to use liteicon. While this changed the finder icon in messages like "do you want to empty trash," it did not change it on the dock, even after logging out and relaunching the dock.

So I went into a bunch of core services and replaced all the finder .icns and .pngs with the one I wanted to use. When I relaunched the dock, the finder was invisible, but it still had the little blue "open" dot below where it was.I downloaded the candybar trial to try to fix it, but even candybar didn't get the icon back.

I'm using 10.5.8. Where are all the places the finder icon should be to show up?

MacBook :: Can't Close Finder Windows - Finder Reopens Them

May 1, 2012

When I close a finder window, the finder menu disappears and then reappears along with the finder window. It looks like finder is crashing and restarting. This started happening after I downloaded a pdf and put it in a folder. Maybe there is a bug in the way finder is rendering the image of the pdf file at the top of the finder window?

How can I restore normal behavior of finder?

OS X :: Cut Not Functional When In Finder?

Oct 25, 2010

We have a couple of systems running 10.6.4. While the Cut function (Cmd+X) works in the applications, it's nonfunctional (grayed out) while in Finder. I'd really like to use Cut/Paste rather than dragging when moving files, as there's less chance for accidentally dropping them where they don't belong. Anyway, I can't seem to find how to make Cut functional.

OS X :: How Finder Is So Much Faster?

Sep 3, 2009

Other than being a Cocoa app now and 64-bit support of course, I think Finder got so much faster especially with folders with a lot of content (like Apps folder) because it seems to load icon previews after it loads the file(s); where as (in my exp.)

Leopard seemed to try and load the files and icon previews at the same time then show you the contents, where as in SL I see the file first and then it loads the icon preview.

OS X :: Combine USB HDs In Finder?

Feb 5, 2010

I have 9 external USB HDs plugged into my Mac and in Sidebar it shows them all seperate and it looks bad cause theres so many. Any program or anyway I can make it show like 1 Folder called "iTunes Server" or something and when u go into it then shows all the external drives? I just want something where it shows only 1 folder or something.

I can do this now by hooking my USB hub to my Airport Extreme and then it shows up under Shared as 1 drive but when you click on it it shows all the HDs hooked up to it.

Thing is I want to hook it up to my Mac not my router.

MacBook :: Can't See The Finder

Mar 21, 2012

This first started because I was trying to empty the trash and the Mac asked me if I wanted to "permently delete" the files, but nothing else was working because I never saw this dialouge box.  I don't even know what I did to make it appear.  So then today I tried to shut down and it wouldn't do it because, again, there was a dialouge for trash emptying that I didn't see.  So, I tried to open finder preferences for something else and I never saw it.  Sometimes I'm looking at the wrong desktop, so I thought that was it.I looked at mission control and didn't see it in any of the desktops, so I was scrolling through the desktops and I could BRIEFLY see the finder window when I was scrolling, but then it'd disappear!I have updated to Lion (OSX 10.7.3).

OS X :: Finder Won't Copy A Certain File?

Oct 24, 2010

I'm in the midst of backing up an external drive (to another external drive) via Firewire 800, which works fine, but for some strange reason one specific file won't be copied. It's an iDVD file with a filesize of 12.98 GB. All other files have been copied without any problems.

When copying over to the backup drive all seems fine for a while, then (after having copied 4.01 GB) I hear some "clunking" sounds from the source drive followed by the error message shown below. I've tried copying the said file several times and to different backup drives, and in all instances the file copying stops at 4.01 GB.

I've checked both drives with Disk utility and they check out fine. And the iDVD file opens fine in iDVD.
Could it be that MacOSX needs some free "work space" on one or several of the drives in question, which isn't available?

Cureently, the source drive has only 10.63 GB free space, the destination drive has 582 GB available and the computer's (1.67GHz Powerbook G4) internal 80 GB drive has 23 GB free space.

MacBook Pro :: Finder Hogging Ram On New MBP?

Nov 18, 2010

I bought a brand new 15" i7 MBP two weeks ago. Today I noticed Finder taking up 375 MB of RAM, somewhat significantly more than anything else running. As of now I still just have the stock 4 GB ram in the machine, and less than 100 MB are free.

I'm not noticing any huge slowdowns so I'm not totally worried about it, I was just surprised to see Finder using so much memory. Is this normal? Is there an easy way to restart Finder?
