OS X :: Can't Cut And Paste In Finder?

I know this is against Mac's philosophy but I really want a simple cut/paste or copy/paste with shortcuts for my finder. Is that anyhow possible? I have tried doing this via QuickSilver, but there has to be an easier way.
View 16 Replies View RelatedI used a cool app called filecutter to cut and paste files (move them). Snow leopard broke the app. I can no longer right click on file and see the filecutter option. I guess path finder has the ability, but I do not need all the extra stuff it comes with.

Is there a setting in OSX that will set the Finder to show folders on the top before individual files - much in the same way Windows does?
View 6 Replies View RelatedSometimes I simply cannot open a new finder window. If I use Command-N or if I choose New Finder Window in the Finder menu, nothing happens. If I am using Command-N, I can see the File heading in the Finder menu bar highlighting, and then after a few seconds the highlight goes, but no window opens. Also, clicking on my Downloads icon in the dock, the dialog opens showing all the files, but if I then click on Open in Finder, the dialog closes but nothing happens. Now that I am writing this message, it all works again! That's what I mean by 'sometimes'. This issue can last for tens of minutes. Secndly, and this is still a problem, my finder Preferences do not stick. So for instance, I don't want to see an icon for my hard disk on the desktop, so I untick this in Finder preferences. The icon disappears. If I now re-start, then it comes back. The same happens for removing the empty trash warning and all of the other Finder Preference tick boxes.
Now, when the first problem of not being able to open a finder window suddenly stopped being a problem, the icon for the hard disk suddenly appeared on my desktop. So the two issues are linked. This has been going on intermittently for a few days. I have verified my disk, and repaired permissions.

I upgraded my MacBook Pro quad core 2.5 from Lion to Mavericks. Since then I get a LOT of beachballs when I'm using Finder. I repaired permissions, deleted com.apple.finder.plist (twice) and finally reinstalled Mavericks over the first one. Still painfully slow and lots of beachballs.

Today I tried to change the finder icon in the dock. Because I'm cheap, I dont have candybar, so I tried to use liteicon. While this changed the finder icon in messages like "do you want to empty trash," it did not change it on the dock, even after logging out and relaunching the dock.
So I went into a bunch of core services and replaced all the finder .icns and .pngs with the one I wanted to use. When I relaunched the dock, the finder was invisible, but it still had the little blue "open" dot below where it was.I downloaded the candybar trial to try to fix it, but even candybar didn't get the icon back.
I'm using 10.5.8. Where are all the places the finder icon should be to show up?
Wasn't this an option previous to 10.7.4? It doesn't work now. When clicking the Finder icon in the Dock, a new Finder window would open? I know about Finder prefs - General - Always open folders in new window but this isn't what I mean.I'd have a Finder window open then want to copy/move something so I clicked on the Finder icon in the dock to get a new window.Every time I clicked the Dock icon, I'd get a new Finder window.

If Finder has been running for a while, and I have a number of finder windows open, when I option-command-w, the Finder crashes and then restarts with all the windows that just closed.
When I close a finder window, the finder menu disappears and then reappears along with the finder window. It looks like finder is crashing and restarting. This started happening after I downloaded a pdf and put it in a folder. Maybe there is a bug in the way finder is rendering the image of the pdf file at the top of the finder window?
How can I restore normal behavior of finder?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am a OS X newbie after using Windows for almost 15 years. One thing I am having trouble figuring out is how to cut & paste files and folders similar to what can be done in a Windows environment (i.e. cut using Ctrl-X, paste using Ctrl-v).
An example is if I want to move files from my hard drive to a flashdrive...is there way to cut and paste (i.e. move) the files? My current method is to just drag the files the new destination (which copies them) and then drag the files from the old location to the trash bin....
When I look at the 'edit' menu in Finder, the 'cut' and 'paste' options are grayed out which makes me think they are unavailable.
I used to be able to copy and paste easily with pre-leopard. What happened and does anyone have a work-around?
View 12 Replies View RelatedHow is the thermal paste in the 2008 Mac Pro?
Is it applied well?
Did any of you guys remove it and replace it with a more high-performance compound such as Arctic Silver 5 or Ceramique?
I have a feeling that Apple did a bad job correctly applying the thermal paste because some of the temperatures that I am seeing are a little on the high side.
Greetings -- I'm having trouble copying-and-pasting an image from a PDF. When I use Preview or Skim, I can select a region of a PDF and click "copy" and then paste that image into another program -- HOWEVER, the resolution of the pasted image seems to be fixed and not very good.
In Windows using Acrobat Reader, I would just zoom in and copy a region to get a higher-resolution copied image. However, no matter how I zoom in OS X I don't get higher-res copies.
I found a limited alternative, which is to use Previews 'grab' to select a region of the screen and copy as a tiff. This is essentially a 'print-screen' so that the resolution is as good as the current view. HOWEVER, this is rather limited and annoying because one needs to have the entire image able to fit on screen and because one has grab, then open the resulting file on the desktop, and THEN copy and paste from that new file.
Does anyone have tips on how to grab high res images off a pdf?
I did a search on this forum and on google and I can't find out how to cut and paste something from mail and then place it in a form on Safari. I see all of the complaints about the iphone but nothing on osx.
I can copy with no problem but when I go to right click where I want to paste the information, the paste option is grayed out.
This is useful for copy and pasting tracking information and or searching for addresses.
I have tried using the menu bar as well as right clicking and I just can't get this to work.
I have had my 15" macbook pro for about 6 months now. Amazing labtop...
Now i have learned almost all of the keyboard shortcuts and use them very frequently. The main ones I use are obviously + C followed by + V . However, recently my + C refuses to work! To copy something I have to manually go into the edit menu and select copy. Yet, all of my other keyboard shortcuts, including + V continue to work!
I don't understand. How do I fix this? Keep in mind, this has been going on for about a week so the computer has been turned on and off many times.
I have received a link via email, and i would like to copy and paste it to my desktop. I have a PC and have done this on that, but can't figure how to do that on my Mac.
I'm sure it's a very simple process, but I just can't get it.
My mom bought this mac G4 from a guy and he didn't include a keyboard, so i've been using one of the keyboards we use for our PCs. On a PC simply holding down ctrl + C will copy and holding ctrl + V will paste. I can't do that with a mac. Is there anyway to copy and paste on this mac? I don't know if it's important or not but this mac is considered "vintage" as the guy at the mac store called it, meaning they cant get parts for it and we have to get a Tiger disk to upgrade it any.
View 2 Replies View RelatedAs a complete newbie in the mac-world, I am faced with some challenges since everything is (fortunately) not identical to the windows world.
One that is driving me nuts is that I am unable to cut anything in almost all applications and folders. I know the shortcut is what-that-keys-name (ctrl in windows) + X, but it doesn't work, since it is always "greyed" out/inactive.
Could someone explain why that is? I should say that most, not all, of the files were copied over via an external HD from my old windows machine.
Unless I just can't find it, one of QT Pro's best features, the ability to cut/copy/paste among clips is gone. This was a very helpful way to edit and combine video clips.
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy question is about the copy and paste functionality of the Mac while using Safari. For some work I do, I need to copy and paste website content to word documents (for example, in PC, I would select all, copy, and paste into Word). I can do the same thing with Safari and Pages, yet when I am on a site with drop-down menus and have selected the item from the menu and try 'select all, copy and paste' with Safari & Pages, it copies ALL drop down menu options. I only want it to copy the one I've selected. Also, this site allows me to enter free-form text in text boxes, but the select all/copy/paste doesnt pick up the text I've entered either.

About copy and paste, is there a way to program this into the right click of my trackpad/mouse?
Right now I have to highlight the word, scroll up to file, click on copy, then do the same to paste...
Any way I try does not work, not even the shortcuts.
I think it is because I deleted the StartUpitems folder thinking it was Start Up Items. I was going through deleting anything with the name of a application I no longer used. I do not know what to do, but I cannot drag or paste any files.
It afects all users. Is there anything besides Install and Archive that I can do?
I do not have an install disk.
Just a real stupid question. Is there a generic way to copy and paste between applications without copying the formatting? If I copy from a website in safari to Excel (for example). The cells in Excel will be formatted exactly the same as on the website including different fonts, and sizes. But often I just want the text, not the formatting. Is there an easy way to do this?

Simply press Cmd, C and any number from 1 to 9 to get additional clipboards.
