OS X :: Connecting To Other Mac In The Finder?
Jul 30, 2010
About a week ago connectivity to shared Macs (Bonjour) in the Finder became slow or failed with server connection failure error messages. We all run Snow Leopard except two older machines which run Tiger. Of course the two Tiger machines shares are immediately connectable. Although they also cannot connect to any of the Macs running Snow Leopard.

I currently have about 8 iMacs in our lab on OS X 10.5.8 with all of their updates. When attempted to reach an SMB share on a Windows 2008 server by way of smb://10.x.x.x each mac starts to error. It reaches the server and asks for their login, but after the correct info is inputted the mac starts to act up. The apple menu disappears and so does every icon on the desktop. The finder navigator becomes inaccessible and you aren't really able to do anything until the computer is forced to shut down by holding down the power button. I turned on Activity Monitor and then tried to connect to a server and saw that the processes Finder and ReportCrash both appear and then disappear about every 15 seconds or less. Over and over again with no popup reporting the crash to the user.

Is there a setting in OSX that will set the Finder to show folders on the top before individual files - much in the same way Windows does?

Sometimes I simply cannot open a new finder window. If I use Command-N or if I choose New Finder Window in the Finder menu, nothing happens. If I am using Command-N, I can see the File heading in the Finder menu bar highlighting, and then after a few seconds the highlight goes, but no window opens. Also, clicking on my Downloads icon in the dock, the dialog opens showing all the files, but if I then click on Open in Finder, the dialog closes but nothing happens. Now that I am writing this message, it all works again! That's what I mean by 'sometimes'. This issue can last for tens of minutes. Secndly, and this is still a problem, my finder Preferences do not stick. So for instance, I don't want to see an icon for my hard disk on the desktop, so I untick this in Finder preferences. The icon disappears. If I now re-start, then it comes back. The same happens for removing the empty trash warning and all of the other Finder Preference tick boxes.
Now, when the first problem of not being able to open a finder window suddenly stopped being a problem, the icon for the hard disk suddenly appeared on my desktop. So the two issues are linked. This has been going on intermittently for a few days. I have verified my disk, and repaired permissions.

I upgraded my MacBook Pro quad core 2.5 from Lion to Mavericks. Since then I get a LOT of beachballs when I'm using Finder. I repaired permissions, deleted com.apple.finder.plist (twice) and finally reinstalled Mavericks over the first one. Still painfully slow and lots of beachballs.

Today I tried to change the finder icon in the dock. Because I'm cheap, I dont have candybar, so I tried to use liteicon. While this changed the finder icon in messages like "do you want to empty trash," it did not change it on the dock, even after logging out and relaunching the dock.
So I went into a bunch of core services and replaced all the finder .icns and .pngs with the one I wanted to use. When I relaunched the dock, the finder was invisible, but it still had the little blue "open" dot below where it was.I downloaded the candybar trial to try to fix it, but even candybar didn't get the icon back.
I'm using 10.5.8. Where are all the places the finder icon should be to show up?

Wasn't this an option previous to 10.7.4? It doesn't work now. When clicking the Finder icon in the Dock, a new Finder window would open? I know about Finder prefs - General - Always open folders in new window but this isn't what I mean.I'd have a Finder window open then want to copy/move something so I clicked on the Finder icon in the dock to get a new window.Every time I clicked the Dock icon, I'd get a new Finder window.

If Finder has been running for a while, and I have a number of finder windows open, when I option-command-w, the Finder crashes and then restarts with all the windows that just closed.

When I close a finder window, the finder menu disappears and then reappears along with the finder window. It looks like finder is crashing and restarting. This started happening after I downloaded a pdf and put it in a folder. Maybe there is a bug in the way finder is rendering the image of the pdf file at the top of the finder window?
How can I restore normal behavior of finder?

An apple consultant at Best Buy sold me the mini display port to VGA adapter, VGA display cable, and stereo audio cable. When all set up, the volume comes through the TV very very low and the only picture I get is the purple light in outerspace MacBook picture, not the movie playing on my macbook.

I'm trying to connect to Leopard from my XP machine at work and I haven't been able to get it working thus far. Here's what I've tried:
1) Enabled Screen Sharing from the Sharing system panel.
2) Checked to make sure Screen Sharing is listed as being allowed to go through the Firewall.
3) Downloaded both the free version of RealVNC and UltraVNC.
RealVNC 4.1.2 gives me the following error: "No matching security types" UltraVNC 1.04 gives me the error: "Incompatible Version" Has anyone had any success connecting via VNC (w/o ARD installed) from XP? If so, what did they do and what XP VNC client?

I work at home on OS X and connect to my office VPN using Juniper's Network Connect software. I also run Windows XP on my OS X using VMWare, and sometimes connect to the office VPN on XP, using the windows NetworkConnect client. I have two questions:
1. I installed MS Office 2008 Standard on my Macbook. I cannot get MS Messenger to talk to the MS communications service through the VPN. I have apple mail talking to the exchange server just fine, and entourage is also talking to the exchange server. I configured messenger with the communication service name, by id, etc., but no luck. It says 'service unavailable try later', even though I can ping the service box using the same DNS name from the terminal command line. Has anyone with Office 2008 for Mac got MS Messenger to talk to their internal office system?
2. As a workaround I connected to work via XP on VMware and connected to the office IM system using MS Communicator on XP. That worked fine. However, as soon as use Juniper network connect to connect to the office VPN on XP/VMWare, my OS X Juniper Network Connect disconnects. And vice versa. I really want both OS X and my XP VM connected to the VPN at the same time. I'm using a NAT connection on VMWare; played around with a bridge connection without much luck but didn't try to hard. Anyone have any ideas here? Again I'm trying to find some way for my VMWare XP and OS X to both connect to the office VPN using Juniper NetworkConnect, at the same time.

I'm trying to connect an iPhone to a Mac Mini via USB. The cable is known to be good. The USB ports all work with other USB devices. The iPhone works with USB devices on other computers AND if I plug it directly into the wall. When restart the computer with the iPhone plugged in, it connects while the OS is not in the ROM. As soon, however, as the OS starts to boot again, the iPhone disconnects.
I plug the iPhone in and nothing happens, including not indicating that it's charging (this is the problem). With the iPhone still plugged in, I restart the Mac. After all the open applications quit and the finder disappears, the iPhone chirps indicating that it's connected and charging. It stays charging while the Mac cycles through the rest of the restart. When, however, the Mac gets to the point where it starts booting the OS, the iPhone chirps again indicating that it's been disconnected.

I have a problem with my Powerbook g3, the display seems to be crapped out and not functioning. I tried hooking up an extrenal monitor. DVI - VGA.
The monitor received no signal. The only other option is s-video, but i'm afraid that the video port is just shot, hence the no signal from the monitor.
I have a program that only runs on that computer.
Is there anyway to link up a macbook pro to the powerbook, and use the macbook pro monitor for the use of the powerbook, so I can run the program.

He is running on a powerbook g4. For years (like 10 or so) he has been using an HP Deskjet 952c to print via USB.
We have recently gotten a Lexmark laser printer that prints wirelessly for the entire office. For a month or two, he was able to use both. He began to have trouble with the wireless printer and we had to delete and then re-add it to his print & fax in System preferences. That worked for the wireless, but then after doing that he was not able to print with his USB HP printer.
We went through the same process of turning the printer off then back on, then later deleted it from the print & fax menu, however, when trying to add it back on, his computer is not detecting it's connection. I have tried resetting his printer and unplugging and re-plugging all of the connections, and still it is not mounting or being recognized.
I don't know what could be causing this or what possible solutions there are. I wouldn't think it would be a driver issue as it is an old printer and has been working up until a few days ago, until his issue with the wireless printer.
Something that could be of note too is that his Entourage has recently crashed, however, I don't know if this would have any effect on his printer connection. Of course I would like this problem to be fixed, but maybe it's just time for an upgrade.

I'm trying to connect my MacBook Pro (just purchased this year) to my television, which is a relatively new (2-3 years old give or take) Magnavox 20" flat panel LCD TV (For reference: [URL] It can display HDTV and EDTV, and has the input for a VGA cable and standard AV & S-Video inputs, as well as a PC input with what looks like input for male DVI. All in all it looks capable of handling the MBP's input. I've tried connecting the mini DVI-VGA adapter to the VGA cable, and the macbook's screen flickers and reverts to normal (with the additional display detected and seeming to function on the mac side).
However, no image appears on my TV screen, except when I'm playing around with the resolution (at which point, an image almost comes on, briefly flickers on with a slightly off-color, then reverts back to a blank screen). At first I thought this was a resolution problem, but even at the macbook's lowest resolution, nothing came onto the screen except that flicker. Would I need a converter or something to get the image onto the screen? I was doing some research and, while my TV doesn't seem that old, I'm wondering whether it might be digital vs. analog signal or something?
