For some reason, my .zip, .dmg and other archive files are being moved to my trash without my consent whenever they're decompressed. I do NOT want this to happen. How can I prevent this?

Suddenly, every file I put in the trash can is emptied immediately. This has never happened before, and I do not believe it is because of a setting somewhere that I changed. Any tips on how to prevent this?

I just upgraded to SL. Now I got crazy on my Trash. Whenever and Whatever I drag a file, a movie, a pic, everything, it will not move the the trash. Instead system warms me "This item will be detect immediately, you can't undo this action." And the item is detect directly. I always have a empty trash.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI bought me a brand new iMac. I freaking love this thing, don't know why I didn't make the jump (back) sooner. Anywho, I have two external hard drives in which I used to transfer data, including some pictures and audio from my Windows Vista computer to the new Mac. I go ahead and finish transferring over the files. When I go to delete the files off my external hard drive, I am met with a "the item (insert file name here) can't be moved to the trash because it can't be deleted". Now, I notice that this happens with ANY file or folder that I attempt to move to the trash can from either of my external hard drives. I can't seem to find a solutions anywhere either via a Google search or on this forum.
View 11 Replies View RelatedMy phone calls and it's my (pc-centric) friend Kasper. He's on msn with his girlfriend in Switzerland and she's panicking. She's just accidentally moved her desktop (including everything on it off course) to the trash. She's also trashed Skype (might have been on desktop?!?). And now she can't move it back out again!Unfortunately I'm not the master of Macs that Kasper hopes and I've no idea what to do about this except try to restart. To calm his girlfriend down I've told him to tell her that I'll be back in 30 min. with expert advice from Macrumors... So, what advice should I pass on to him to her?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a 500GB external harddrive that uses TM and have recently wanted to free up some space, so stupidly I manually moved a ton of the backups (I can't even imagine how many gigs) to the trash. The trash bin now can't even fathom the amount of space and literally doesn't empty itself (it goes to like 140,000 items to delete and just keeps going). So I read that you're not supposed to delete TM backups this way but now I'm kind of screwed because I can't move the files from the trash to the External again cause it takes too much time. What the hell am I supposed to do?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI cannot delete email the "normal" way. When I set up my POP account, it created a second trash folder with the same name as my mail account. There are thus two folders in my Trash can - "On My Mac" and the one named after my email account. When I try to delete any mail it says that I cannot move anything to the Trash folder for my Mail account. I have to DRAG all email I wish to delete to the "On My Mac" Trash folder? I just want to be able to click delete and have email go away! Why is this not working?

I somehow managed to do something really silly, I don't know how exactly I did it, but I had moved my desktop to the trash. So now it's sitting there in the trash. I don't dare do anything until I get some proper advice. Can I just drag it back to my home folder and clear the trash?

I accidentally moved MS office 2011 to trash and cannot get it back... "put back" option is not in bold. Have read many threads to drag it to desktop, applications etc but am afraid to do this. should I just re-install the program as I have the disk? but my main concern: if I reinstall, will I lose existing files of Word, Excel, PP? I see them now converted to I-Works, will they remain? BTW - I have not backed up on time machine in over 2 months!

I accidentally moved an event from my library to the trash (from within FCPX using the 'move event to trash' command). I realized what I did right away and hit 'undo' from the file menu. When I open the event library I can see everything there, but the project is not showing up in FCPX, even after restarting the program.
Is there a way to save the project? I also saved all of the project files/folders, including the 'current version' to a separate folder before accidentally trashing (copied them to a backup with the master files I created). Is there a way to restore those files? I like to save the project folders/files with my masters in case I ever has to revisit any project for any reason. Figured I could just drop them back into the directory and then reimport all of the 'missing' media.
I was trying to delete one file , so i dragged to trash, then all of a sudden I realize my entire Drobo (3TB Huge) was highlighted and deleting to my trash! So now I have a trash folder full all my Drobo's content and I can't figure out how to get it all back to "put back"! Despite having several files in the trash, its icon never changes (always shows an empty trash) and the "Empty Trash" option is dimmed (that is, cannot be used). OnyX ws the only solution but it's temporary. What's the fix I should apply to Mac OS X? Also, why is it that every time I want to move a file to trash I must enter my password? It's annoying to say the least.Please help me as I don't want to go through the royal pains of installing everything again, Windows-style. I think Mac OS X should be better than that.

When I try to partition it, it takes about 10 minutes, by that time, pretty much everything is frozen. After that time has elapsed, it gives me this error. What am I doing wrong? What files cannot be moved? I went to Disk utility but I don't know what to do here. I remember I deleted the previous Windows partition that I had.

I have tried to install windows on my mac and bootcamp says files can't be moved, I haven't got a problem with reinstalling my mac provided someone can tell me if it's possible using a backup from time machine and the process needed please. I've no idea whether it will work and I want to be 99.99999% sure before I do anything as I have important work on my mac which I can't afford to loose.

View 24 Replies View RelatedI have several hundred word processing files I prepared in MS WORD. I moved the folders containing this files from my old computer to my new iMac. Every time I try to open one of these files, I see a box on the screen saying the file cannot be opened.
This is true when I try to use MS WORD for mac, when I try Pages, and when I try other word processors.
I suspect some sort of permissions need to be set for the folders or the files. I hope it can be done in "bulk"
am not sure if I am posting this in the right category. I am new on here so forgive me if it is not in the right place. I am having trouble with my partition using boot camp. I am getting an error about the files not being able to be moved. I have repaired permissions... did not work. Defragmented.... did not work. When I look at the defrag log I see that there is an error -43 on a jpg, which I can not find. All the other errors are items running that pertain to actually the computer working (quit all files that were opened just to make sure).
