When partitioning so that I can install XP, bootcamp claims that specific files cannot be moved, making it so that I am unable to install XP. It then orders me to ~gasp~ back my files, and reinstall OSX. Anyone else have this error message? I wanted a 14GB partition, and that would leave about 16 additional gigs free on the OSX partition

I have tried to install windows on my mac and bootcamp says files can't be moved, I haven't got a problem with reinstalling my mac provided someone can tell me if it's possible using a backup from time machine and the process needed please. I've no idea whether it will work and I want to be 99.99999% sure before I do anything as I have important work on my mac which I can't afford to loose.

View 15 Replies View Relatedam not sure if I am posting this in the right category. I am new on here so forgive me if it is not in the right place. I am having trouble with my partition using boot camp. I am getting an error about the files not being able to be moved. I have repaired permissions... did not work. Defragmented.... did not work. When I look at the defrag log I see that there is an error -43 on a jpg, which I can not find. All the other errors are items running that pertain to actually the computer working (quit all files that were opened just to make sure).

I get this error message: The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved. Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again. I do not have a removable hard drive to back up my data on. I've got two flash drives that I put my most important documents on but that's it. I can use my IPod Nano to store my ITunes library until this gets figured out.
The only data I would really lose would be my firefox information, though I did get the book mark history, my video game saved data (4 games), and programs like Word 04, Flip4Mac, and other miscellaneous gadgets. I have already shelled out $80 for the Leopard upgrade and $120 for XP. I have no other need for a removable hard drive and as such I will not buy one. I just got off the phone with Apple Tech Support, one hour of it, and after trying repairing disk permissions and other Disk Utility functions we got nowhere. I tried booting from the Leopard disk and doing the same Disk utility repair/repair permissions to no avail.
Varying the size of the partition had no effect. I tried wiping the free space on my hard drive via Disk Utilities and that did nothing. I have plenty of room on my hard drive, it's 120GB and I have a shade over 60GB remaining. The information on "Mac HD" is as follows:

During the rebook with the Leopard CD, there were apparently some disk permission errors. During the repair permissions process it appeared they could not be repaired but were modified or something to that effect. I just ran another -verify disk-verify disk permissions-repair disk permissions and these errors did not show up. A subsequent attempt at partitioning failed. I was directed to call tech support tomorrow AM and am supposed to ask for someone in 'Tier 2', but I'm hoping someone has some ideas that do not including wiping my entire hard drive and starting from scratch. Particularly since I don't know if that will actually work
I have an alu iMac with a 500GB HDD. There is about 200GB free. Every time I run the Bootcamp Assistant, choose a Windows partition (doesn't matter what size), it sits with the progress bar spinning for ages before it gives me the error "Disk could not be partitioned as some files cannot be moved. Please reformat the disk and try again". There is no way I can back the disk up, reformat, reinstall and re-update everything. No other apps are running when I run the Bootcamp Assistant.
View 9 Replies View RelatedYesterday when I wanted to boot Vista Ultimate 32-Bits on my 20" iMac (late 2006 model) it only gave me BSODs at startup and then rebooted my computer automatically. I tought: OK, let's just erase Windows. So I fired up Boot Camp-assistent and deleted the Windows partition. Today, I wanted to reinstall Windows Vista again, but when I tried to partition my drive with bootcamp, it gave me the error saying that my harddrive could not be partitioned because some files can't be moved. It says I'll have to format my hardrive to 1 partition using the Drive Utility. But I'm very afraid I do something wrong and that Mac OS can't boot anymore. I also don't have a drive to store a back-up of all my files on. Can I just ignore this screen and if I do, will I be able to start Mac OS X normally? I DO NOT want to install Windows after this anymore, guess I will buy a PC for games in a while or go to my friend's house to play Crysis and such.

I recently made a clone of my Windows XP Pro SP3 installation (its roughly about 14GB according to Finder/WinClone) so i made a 80GB partition on my 320GB drive and it gives me this error message:
the WinClone came from a 500GB internal drive and ive gotten winclone images to restore to a MBP before but not sure why its giving me this error code, anyway to restore the image to the new partition (which was created with Bootcamp) as i no longer have access to the old machine it was running on.
So my iMac came with a 1TB hard drive and I installed Windows 7 x64 but only gave it some 93GB. I have a two-prong question:
Can I add a third partition to my drive after I partition for BootCamp? My main partition ("Macintosh HD" by default) is over 900GB large and I'd really like to cut that up into 2x450GB, for example, in addition to the 93GB BootCamp partition.
Second, once partitioned, is it possible to resize the BootCamp partition to make it bigger after it has been set up?
the other day ive decided to finally put xp on my macbook, just so everybody knows i use my macbook for my uni assignments and to store all my close memories (photos and diaries) so the data on there is vital and priceless. I launched the bootcamp application and i chose to partition 32gb for the windows, at this point i turned away to use my main PC playin a game while my macbook is partitioning away. i look back about 10mins later and i see a grey screen asking me to reset my macbook in few different languages. i didnt really read it properly thinking its apple and everything is idiotproof! it said to hold the power button in for few seconds to reset which i did, i resetted it and i was expecting the bootcamp to relaunch to further continue the operation (installin windows time or doin the driver disk thing) but it doesnt happen. i put the xp disc in and it doesnt load, and i look in finder and im missing a good 32gb, i restarted again holding the option key and i only see the Mac HD icon. i am a fairly new mac user and i just want to keep it full mac, i want to restore the way that it was without the stupid windows idea. is there a safe way to remerge my partitions together into the orginal full one? also ive used disk utitilies and it doesnt pick up another partition.

Question: My Blackbook also has a Bootcamp partition running Windows - is there a way to take that image and migrate it to my MB Air? I'd rather not have to purchase the Superdrive and re-install/setup the Windows OS on my Air....
I have a 13" MBP with a 250 gb hd, I partitioned the HD 25gb for Windows XP shortly after I bought it. I was unable to install my copy of windows, contacted apple after exhaustive search as to why... Long story short, I now have Vista to install... When I went back to Boot Camp Assistant; partition was gone. Researched... ran disk utility, repaired and erased partition. Bootcamp HD now shows up in desktop, still not in bootcamp assistant. Since I am unable to locate in assistant; would there be any problems with just installing Vista off the install disk by restarting? Any ideas what to do if this is not a good idea (short of restoring)?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI want to try out Windows 7. During this process though I deleted my winXP partition. When I went to create a new BootCamp partition in The BootCamp SetUp Assisstant, it failed to create the partition on my harddrive.
I was greeted with the error, "BootCamp SetUp assistant failed to yada yada yada, please backup and reformat your harddrive."
So my question is do I really have to reinstall Mac OS X? (I backup with TimeMachine so it won't be a big deal but still thats a very long process.) Do you guys have any tips or anything to get Mac OS X to partition my main HDD?

I've tried several times, tried using different sizes every time. My HD's capacity is 250GB, and I've got 108.95GB free. So I am sure that making a new partition of 35 - 40 GB is not a big deal. I also tried using Disk Utility, both from the Mac OS install disc and while using the Mac OS itself, but it keeps giving me this error. I do not want to format my Macintosh HD's partition because I don't have an external HDD on me at the moment so I will not be able to back up. I have a lot of important data that can not be deleted.

My Finder says that I have about 50GB free, Disk Utility says I have about 20GB free, and Boot Camp says I have less than 10GB free. I ran a Disk Verify in my Mac OS Partition, it says the OS disk is corrupt. I went to the Recovery Partition, it says everything is fine. What do I do to fix these issues?

now here is the problem my windows 7 is infected with virus (thats why windows suck big time) and i need to reformat my windows 7 and reinstall a new windows 7.
how am i supposed to do it? insert the installation disk and do like how we initially installed windows 7? just format the partition and reinstall again? i just want to make sure so i ask before doing anything.
or can i do this? i use winclone to restore? any1 have any idea? i'm new to all this i dont know how to do it. i have backup using winclone but how do i do it? do i still need to format then only use winclone?
So I am trying to open up my bootcamp partition (running windows 7) in VMWare and I get this error message: Cannot open the disk '/Users/brandonquirarte/Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/Virtual Machines/Boot Camp/%2Fdev%2Fdisk0/Boot Camp partition.vmwarevm/Boot Camp partition.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on. It was working just fine before the upgrade to Snow Leopard but I am not sure if that has anything to do with it. I had to reinstall Windows 7 after I tried installing the Bootcamp 3.0 drivers so that may be more of the issue. I didn't test to see if would work still when I upgraded to Snow Leopard.

Ive noticed most people are having problems with all of these programs when trying to backup a W7 image whilst on Snow Leapord (Mac OS x 10.6, which I am running)I know that is the function of the 3 applications above... But to my knowledge... In theory - I should be able to just backup my W7 using a reliable backup program (Can someone recommend any?) and then delete the existing BootCamp partition, create a new one of 100gig and then just load up the backed up image for Windows 7...
I launched the Boot Camp Assistant 2.0 on my iMac OS X v10.5. I was hoping to install Windows XP Professional with Built-in Service Pack 3. However, when I tried to partition the disk (32 GB on Windows), a message came up, saying "The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved." I then ran Bootcamp, created a partition and installed XP. Everything was fine. I then partitioned my main drive and got the warning message about Bootcamp maybe not working afterwards. So I finished partitioning my Mac drive as I wanted and now I don't have the option of booting into XP through Bootcamp. When I try it just shows the Mac drive as my only boot option. I see the XP Bootcamp drive in the System Preferences startup disk area, but I assume I did something to the partition once I partitioned my Mac drives
I'm trying to transfer a file to my Bootcamp partition but seem to have come across some trouble. The file is a 7.86Gb iso and I need to move it from my OSX partition onto my Windows XP Bootcamp partition (NTFS formatted). I have an external hard drive and a pen drive but they are of no use. The pen drive is slightly smaller than the file when formatted, and so it cannot fit. The external HD is formatted as Mac OS Journaled and I considered reformatting as FAT32, but this limits file size to 4Gb. How I might get this file transferred?
