Nov 7, 2008
"This computer's local hostname, Mac Pro=4 local is already in use on this network. The name has been changed to Mac Pro-5". To change the local hostname, open System Preferences and click Sharing , then click edit and type the name in the local hostname field.

I use VNC to connect my Mac mini from ThinkPad. Until 10 minetes, I used 192.168.1.3 to connect my Mac mini, but now I found I couldn't connect it! I checked my Mac mini's ip address, it is 169.254.122.214! As you know it is not easy to confirm ip address, I want to know if I can use a hostname even if the address is changed?

I work in an IT environment where we are adding more and more Macs every day. I have been charged with researching joining Macs to the domain. Before, we've had them unbound but we've decided to change that. Our environment is nearly entirely Windows based on the server-side. On Windows 2008 R2 servers we run DHCP, DNS, and AD. The problem is that when I bind a computer to the the domain, the hostname changes in the terminal window to one owned by an IP address previously. I'm worried that this might interfere with applications / scripts that run in the terminal.
I read that there is a hostname config file in OSX that can be configured to override this. I'd rather not do this for every computer in the domain though. Even if it could be scripted I'd have to manually type every hostname..not fun. I've read that enabling dynamic DNS on the DNS server should fix this but it doesn't appear to. We have "Always dynamically update DNS A and PTR records" checked and also "Dynamically update DNS A and PTR records for DHCP clients that do not request updates"
On the Mac client I've tried enabling and disabling the enable dyanmic DNS checkbox..
Is there a way to change this via a switch either on the backend or in the client itself without having to change that hostname file?

I am building a 10.7 Lion NetInstall image. What I want to setup at some point during the imaging process be it before the install or post configuration it prompts me to set a hostname for a system and then it auto binds the system to our AD domain using that hostname. Is this possible to setup on a Custom NetInstall image on System Image Utility? If so how would I go about setting that up.
I saw how you can create a predefined list of hostnames or have it auto set a hostname using a prefix and the mac address. However I want to be able to define a completely custom hostname during the image process.

Normally, you can create a DNS record that points to the zone itself, e.g.:Â
@Â Â 10800 IN AÂ Â Â 196.197.200.201Â
How do you accomplish that on a Mac OSX Lion Server? The DNS requires you to enter a hostname and it does not accept "@" as the hostname as it normally appears in the zone file. (manually modifying the host file does not work - I tried that ;-) )Â

When starting Safari it take 3-4 minutes to load Google - Then when I type in the search box, within the first letter or 2 it locks up again - sometimes says "Could not contact Spell Checker"
I updated from 10.3.9 to 10.4.11 3 months ago and all has been just fine but now I am getting these errors. Also when Safari is acting up, Mail won't operate properly.
If I set up a new user, everything works great. But I'd like to restore my Local Preferences if possible without losing anything.

I've created a few PHP websites on my mac mini before uploading them. I placed the website files in the 'Sites' folder of my user account and turned on 'Personal Web Sharing' in the Sharing preferences and could access them fine. All of a sudden, I can no longer access the sites through my web browser - I'm given the message that my browser cannot connect to the server. Any ideas why this might have suddenly started happening? I installed MySQL last week - would that affect it in any way?!

I am also a newbie to the MAC world and I am loving it. But I do have a question. At my workplace I access the internet via AirPort. I need to access files on other PC's in the office and I cannot seen to find a way. I know on my HP Laptop I was able to access other computers by clicking on network icon. As a side note I never used ethernet port on HP either.

I am using the ifconfig command to change my ip address as follows:ifconfig en0 down
ifconfig en0 169.254.x.x netmask 255.255.0.0ifconfig en0 -arp upThe commands claim to complete succesfully, but the ip stack does not seem to recognize its new ip address. For example: from a remote machine I issue the command ping 169.254.x.and receive no response. Using wire shark I can see the ping request are being received on machine 169.254.x.x, yet no response is sent.

I've read Pondini's articles on this but I still can't work out why Time Machine isn't creating local snapshots of my machine. I have 72GB of 500GB free on my HDD which is definitely over the 10% threshold needed for local snapshots to work (I think) so I don't know why it isn't working.

OK, so I am completely new to mac. The last time I used a mac computer was when my family had one around 1994/1995. So, I don't know how to do completely basic things like this.
I got my macbook on Saturday, less than a week ago. Last night I bought the Sims 2 at the apple store and I asked the guy if it would run good on it. He went through all of the requirements and said that my computer surpassed all of them.
So I go to run it and it won't run and says I need to free up local disk space. Basically I'm wicked pissed right now and am worrying that something is wrong with my computer or he was lying and I can't return it. How do I free this up? Is it a big deal that I need to do this after having the computer for less than 5 days? This is the only big program I've installed so far. I've only installed basic stuff like office and my printer so I don't know how it could be out of space already.

I currently have a media center machine, and my laptop which i use to load my music with. So i am loading my albums onto my laptop and keeping them in the local Music folder, but i have the rest of my music collection stored on my media machine (also a mac). Im wondering if anyone has a solid free solution i can use where it can sync my music folder on my laptop to the music folder on the media machine. I have looked for some on google but they either cost something, or they dont seem reliable. If i could find one that runs on schedule to back up my music every night that would be prime.

I have a CSS file that displays a repeated background. Only problem is, when I open the HTML file(linked with the CSS file to display the background) it doesn't show the background. This only happens when I'm opening the HTML file that is on my computer(local). I uploaded the exact same HTML/CSS files, and the needed images to my web server, then go to the link in my web browser and it displays 100% correct. So I know I haven't done anything wrong, coding wise. I have tried to open the local HTML/CSS files in multiple browsers(Opera, FireFox, Safari), and they all do the exact same thing. They display everything else correct, except there is never a background image. I am using a Mac Pro, with Leopard 10.5.7. Any ideas? Tell me if you need something more explained, or more details.

I have a MBP that I take to work with me every day. I like listening to iTunes at work and at home. I have a pretty large library so I moved the library from my MBP to a nice 500gb external HDD. So while Im at work, I plug it in and poof, Im off and running with my tunes.
I keep a copy of that library on my home server also.
Now here is where I get lazy. At home, Im much more mobile with my MBP. I take it on the deck, I have it in the basement, I bring it to the kitchen, garage, ect... I dont like carrying the external HDD around all over the place.
So recently I opened iTunes using the Option-click command and selected my home server as the location for the library. The very same library I keep a copy of on the external. iTunes gave me an error about not having a library file in that location. So I copied the library file from my external to my server and tried it again. iTunes loaded up but...
1. Im missing 50% of my artwork, artwork I spent a while collecting.
2. When I switch back to my external drive, iTunes gives me the same error from above. So I have to copy the library file to my external drive from my server and then back again when I want to switch again. (Hope that makes sense.)

I would like to ask about the macbook pro late 2008. I am willing to own a network local sharing server in my University so, students can upload their multimedia files and movies etc to my mac using the local network of the university connection. Student will use torrents apps to download files from the server so they log to the website which I will create and they download the tracking file then they open it and use it to download the file from the server via torrent apps. My Macbook pro is 2.4 with 4g ram and with 380G HDD I own a new macbook pro late 2009 so I will not use the old one and I will keep it online 24/7. But I don't know if I can use it or not for this purpose.

I have Mac OS X Leopard, and I am working on making a web site. I am using Coda/Espresso for my main HTML editing and Photoshop for image editing. When I try to preview the HTML file in any browser (including Coda's and Espresso's), it displays the HTML and the CSS and Javascript and stuff fine, but the images are not shown, but when I view it from the server, they show up just fine.
I have the site folder located at /Users/myusername/Sites/, and all the links are in this format: /folder/file.png I would prefer not to change the links to the full link URL such as: /Users/myusername/Sites/folder/file.png because that would mess with the server links too.
What should I do about this and how can I fix it?

at my work we have a Xerox WorkCentre 7232 with a phone line connected to it and an ethernet cable connected to it. You can print anything over the network so I know foresure that its connected to the network, and you can send faxes manually from it so I know the faxes are working. Now what I would like to do is make it so all the computers which are all mac's (10.4 or 10.5) in my office send faxes right from their computers by connecting to the xerox workcentre 7232. So if some one would like to send a fax instead of walking over to the machine they could just click on the pdf or word doc and tell it to be faxed from their computer. I tried to set it up with no luck, even call xerox for help but they wanted to send a tec over. So can someone assist me on how to set this all up? I'm I missing part of the puzzle and need some software?
