OS X :: Files Appear Larger On Flash Drive?

Feb 19, 2010

Title says it all. Basically, I reformatted my new flash drive to MS-DOS (which I think/suspect it was already) and files copied onto the flash drive become much larger. For example, a 275 megabyte folder full of images turned into a 425 megabyte folder-even when dragged off the flash drive.

What could cause this? I do suspect that it's a labeling error, as the file doesn't act like it's gained size.

OS X :: Flash Drive Containing .M4V Files Don't Show Up On PC?

Sep 14, 2010

I have a 1GB flash drive..of which i've placed some iTunes formatted home movies in to hand to my dad who has a Windows XP laptop.

When this flash drive is connected to his laptop and I discover the flash drive on XP, and try to open it...nothing happens. Nothing opens. At best it says that in order to view the files in the flash drive that Windows XP needs to reformat the flash drive, but in the process it states that it will have to erase all content and data to do so..

So now i'm wondering how can I transfer these movie files from my MBP to his Windows XP laptop.?

I've only tried this on flash drives and really hope it wouldn't be the same situation if I used my external hard drive instead; as in connecting my external HD which had a ton more home movies, connect it to his laptop and hopefully it showing up... My external HD isn't running Time Machine or anything like that, it's just a clean External HD where I throw in a lot of home movies...

Hardware :: How To Delete Files From USB Flash Drive In OS X

Nov 9, 2007

I don't know how to delete truly files from my flash drive. Whenever I press cmd+backspace or simply drag file to trash, it doesn't delete fully, i.e., space available doesn't increase on flash drive, the icon just disappears. When I plug it in using Windows, I can see .Trash and .Spotlight<something> folders which are hidden. In .Trash I see my deleted files, but how the heck can I really delete them off my flash drive? I often just copy all my content to hard drive, format flash drive and then copy back my content.

OS X :: Difficulty With Reopening Files On Flash Drive?

Jul 12, 2009

I went to use my flash drive to open some old files (which were created on a pc, Word) to see if I wanted to delete them, opened several files with Word using Windows for Mac, closed out the files, went to reopen them and couldn't. The size of the files went down to zero KB after opening. I had tried to move several to the trash but I got an "error -43" code. I can't figure out why this is happening. No idea where to start.

Hardware :: Wrong Date Shows On Files And Flash Drive?

Dec 26, 2009

I have 2 Ibooks: one has OSX and the other is on the highest version of the old OS9. Something odd happened the other day with a new USB flash drive I started using. I was transfering files (word docs) onto a flash drive. When I inserted the flash drive in the old iBook, each file (and document) showed the date Dec 9, even though the docs were from Dec. 16. When I inserted the flash drive in the newer iBook, it showed the correct dates for each doc. I tried this back and forth, and found the same thing. Yet, all the dates are correct on everything on my hard drive on the old iBook. It only is a problem with this new flash drive I'm using. It never happened before.

MacBook Pro :: Replacing Internal Drive With Larger Drive On 17"?

Apr 8, 2012

I have a mid-2009 MacBook Pro 17" computer.  I bought a 750gb Hitachi drive in an upgrade kit from OWC.  I have formatted it and now using Carbon Copy Cloner am making a copy of the internal 500gb drive.  I am not very familiar with Mac OS X drive partitions.  When Carbon Copy Cloner copies the 500gb partition from my Pro, will it leave the other 250gb or will I need to use Disk Utility or somethng else to format the remaining space? I would like to put the 750gb in the Pro moving the current 500gb into the external housing if possible.

Hardware :: Unable To Eject Flash Drive / Not Deleting Files From Trash?

Sep 7, 2009

I have a flash drive that I use a good bit, but recently it's started doing this thing where it won't eject. Even force ejects hang and I literally have to restart the computer to get the message to go away.

It also has issues deleting files. Perfect example, I just plugged it in, dragged one file to the trash, didn't do anything else, and when I try to empty the trash it says that file is in use when it definitely is not. Then, giving up on that I try to eject the drive and it won't.

I'd say it won't eject about 3/4 of the time. Other drives are fine, so it's not something I'm doing, and it does it on every computer I try, so it's not just my computer in particular.Any ideas what might be causing this?

OS X :: Mac Cannot Save Files Larger Than 4GB (Torrent Download)

Aug 13, 2010

Here is the real problem that we (MAC OS X) users are facing now.

1- The MACINTOSH HD, is already formatted with Mac OS Extended (Journaled). BUT, I installed bit torrent and whenever I want to download a torrent file for movie or something bigger than 4GB it refused as discussed above. WHY?? In my opinion, Mac OS Extended (Journaled) is also not supporting files larger than 4G?? if this is right .....Damn to MAC then.

2- I thought to myself, why don't I install windows XP by boot camp, and solve this problem??, but Boot camp request you to format the partition for windows with FAT32 so you can read the files when you are in MAC system, but this does not solve the problem as we still can not install files larger than 4GB. !!

3- Even if we format the external HDs with NTFS, MAC OS X will only read them and won't save on them or amend them, So we still can not install torrent files larger than 4GB. !! (Remember FAT 32 can not read NTFS, this means that the installed version of windows by Boot camp (FAT32) can not see the external HD which is formatted as NTFS, also MAC can only read it but NOT amending or saving.

4- What is the best solution regarding the information I have posted above. Please note I am using MacBook Pro 13" with Mac OS X.

Apple allowed us to install windows versions on Mac Computer but they did not solve the problems of the large files, especially files are getting bigger day by day, and also I can not understand why Mac OS Extended (Journaled) can not also read and write and save files larger than 4GB

Power Mac G5 :: Need Larger Internal 2nd Drive For Final Cut

Dec 2, 2007

I'm using an older G5 single processor. I've reached the Max with a 300 Gig Seagate 2nd internal drive. I've run out of FCP srcatch disk space. I have about 75 Gigs left. I researched a Seagate HD Model ST3750640AS - Interface SATA - it's 750 Gigs. I just wanna make sure that the ones sold by New Egg etc., are compatible. Here's New Egg's; [URL].

I also wanna make sure that I've choosen the correct path to back up the 250 Gigs of data; First I need to copy all of the scratch disk files into another Hard Drive. Perhaps one of my external Lacie's. I'm familiar with how to Erase the New Drive, and format the New drive using MAC OS extended Journaled. Next (in turn), I'll need to copy all that data (little bits at a time), back to the New Seagate internal drive.

Applications :: ITunes Create AAC Version Makes Files Larger Since Latest Update

Apr 6, 2009

For years I've used iTunes' "Create AAC version" .mp3 to .m4a feature in the advanced menu, primarily to reduce the file size of my many thousand mp3 songs.

Since the latest update to iTunes, whenever I do this now, the AAC version file size created by iTunes get larger, and makes the .m4a significantly bigger than an .mp3.

I understood the very point of an AAC/.m4a was to be a smaller sized file of an equivilent .mp3 while keeping a similar quality.

I know large artwork affects the file size, but this still happens regardless of artwork.

Does anyone know what's changed re this feature in this latest update?

Power Mac G5 :: Upgrading Hard Drive To Larger Size?

Dec 15, 2007

I have a power mac G5 2.7 that is 2.5 years old. It came configured with two 400GB drives inside as it will only hold two. I now really want to change them out to either two 750 GB or preferably two 1TB drives. Apple, however, has told me it won't work and that my unit will not handle this huge additional power consumption. I have called mac mall and they say no way as well. OWC says they have many working like that and its never been a problem. Then I called Apple again and they said it will work fine. I have 6 more months of Apple care, but either way do not want to blow the interior of this system up. I know I need SATA drives and would ideally like to purchase the Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.

MacBook :: Clone OS Leopard - Bootcamp To Larger Drive

Jul 19, 2009

I have a Macbook (about a year and a half old) with 250 G hard drive which is partitioned in half. One half has Mac Os (leopard) and the other bootcamp partition is Windoze xp. I use both equally. I am planning to get a 500-750 G 2.5 inch hard drive and clone my entire hard drive to it so I will have more room (and also a good backup if the need ever arises). Since my drive has BOTH the Mac os and the bootcamp partiton with windoze on it, I need to clone them both over to the new drive. I believe superduper just clones the OS portion and I really don't want to re-install the windows stuff unless i have to! I read that winclone can clone the windoze partitian. SO THIS IS MY PLAN. I AM NOT SURE IF THIS WILL WORK. Is this right? Did I leave anything out? Is there a better way?

1. Get new larger drive and put in a separate powered enclosure
2. Connect to my macbook with usb connector
3. Use superduper to clone the Mac Os to the new drive.
4. Use Winclone to clone the bootcamp (windoze) partition to the new drive
5. Replace the old smaller drive with the new drive.

I think this would work, but am not sure how or when i have to partition the new drive to work with winclone. or does winclone do this automatically?

MacBook :: Replaced Hard Drive With A Larger - Can't Load OS?

Jul 22, 2009

iBook, G4 12", 1.2 GHz

This old unit needed a bigger hard drive, so a friend gave me a Hitachi 60 GB drive he didn't need and I installed it. He told me that it was formatted for MS-DOS and that I would need to reformat it for Mac OS. I'm pretty sure that I did accomplish that using Disk Utilities in the Installer program.

I put a OS 10.4 install disk in and tried to boot from it. My problem is I'm getting a screen alert that says, "This software cannot be loaded on this computer." I can either restart (what good is that?) or go to "Startup Disk" where I choose the install disk (or Network Startup) and click on Restart. Then I choose English as the main language and bang! - right back to the wonderful, "This software cannot be loaded on this computer."
