What I want to do is back up my current Mac mini (160GB hdd) with Time Machine. I then want to upgrade the system drive in the Mac mini to a 320 GB drive and restore from the Time Machine backup with all my programs, settings and files. Will it work even if the back up and restoration drive sizes are different?
View 2 RepliesMy new Macbook is only 1 week old, so there is not much (or any) useless crap that I don't want or need. The Macbook came with a 160Gb hard drive. Prior to switching to Mac I was a 4-year Linux user. I purchased a new 320Gb drive for my Linux-PC laptop just 2 months ago. I took that drive out and would like to put it in my new Macbook. I would prefer to transfer data from old to new drive rather than starting fresh all over again. So I assume Time Machine is the way to go, and/or use Migration Assistant. My question is how Time Machine works, exactly.
In Linux when you do a backup using Partimage, it backs up byte-for-byte, meaning that if you back up a 100Gb drive, it will restore that same volume size regardless of how much bigger the restore drive is. Put another way, if you buy a 150Gb drive and restore, you will end up with a 100Gb drive with no space left over. I want to avoid this! So how will I backup and restore, and at the end have a 320Gb drive, rather than another 160Gb drive? Will I have to install the OS on the new drive before I restore? And yes, I do have an external hard drive I can back up to, though I haven't used it yet.
How to copy your Time Machine contents to a new larger Time Capsule drive ? I have three Time Capsule , two new (3 and 2 TB) and one old (1TB) contaniing all my backups. Only the 3TB have WiFi enabled, the other two are using ethernet only. my Macbook Pro are using ethernet only. I want to migrate from the old 1TB to the new 2TB for backup and other contents. Problem: my Time Capsultes dont show up in Disk Utility.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI had to restore my Macbook Pro to a previous backup because of an issue I am experiencing. I seleted the Restore option in Lion Recovery, I seleteced the backup I want to restore from on my Time Capsule to restore, initially the restoration looked good. However once the progress reached 0.6% the restore simply stopped and the estimated time rocketed indefinitely up to some 200 hours. After I gave it a second attempt, this time again the restoration stopped at 0.6%, and when the estimated time reached around 26 hours an error message showed up saying the files cannot be restored and prompted me to restart my computer. I have attempted a repair of the sparesbundle in Disk Utility on my iMac and I am giving it a third attempt. I haven't done anything to the sparesbundle file and it backs up perfectly fine up until this morning right before I decided to restore my old system so I am brushing file corruption aside.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've got an iMac with a 1TB harddrive and am trying to use a time machine set up to back up my harddrive. The external harddrive I'm using for my back up is also 1TB. I currently have about 135GB of free space on my iMac's harddrive and my external drive is completely empty. When I try to back up using time machine it tells me that the back up is 1.2TB and cannot fit on my 1TB external harddrive. What would cause the initial back up to be larger than the actual computers harddrive? Is there anything I can do to rectify this issue without me needing to purchase a larger external harddrive for back up?

Basically I have a 750GB hard drive in my Macbook Pro and over 300GB is taken up with 'BackUp' data. This is more than the total of everything I have on the drive other than that. Time Machine has always been setup on an external drive and when searching all files on the Macbook there is nothing for backup files so don't know where it is coming from.

I have a power mac G5 2.7 that is 2.5 years old. It came configured with two 400GB drives inside as it will only hold two. I now really want to change them out to either two 750 GB or preferably two 1TB drives. Apple, however, has told me it won't work and that my unit will not handle this huge additional power consumption. I have called mac mall and they say no way as well. OWC says they have many working like that and its never been a problem. Then I called Apple again and they said it will work fine. I have 6 more months of Apple care, but either way do not want to blow the interior of this system up. I know I need SATA drives and would ideally like to purchase the Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.

I have purchase a new hard drive for my MacBook Pro Intel 2 Core duo and know how to do it, but once it is installed in the machine, I want to know how to install the operating system. The computer now is almost empty (only a few photos I have backed up) so there is no need to transfer any data. Do I just use the discs that came with it? Please tell me how I restore the system with this new hard drive.

This old unit needed a bigger hard drive, so a friend gave me a Hitachi 60 GB drive he didn't need and I installed it. He told me that it was formatted for MS-DOS and that I would need to reformat it for Mac OS. I'm pretty sure that I did accomplish that using Disk Utilities in the Installer program.
I put a OS 10.4 install disk in and tried to boot from it. My problem is I'm getting a screen alert that says, "This software cannot be loaded on this computer." I can either restart (what good is that?) or go to "Startup Disk" where I choose the install disk (or Network Startup) and click on Restart. Then I choose English as the main language and bang! - right back to the wonderful, "This software cannot be loaded on this computer."
I'm thinking about getting a bigger internal HD for my 15 inch macbook pro. Currently 250GB, want 750gb. I have Macbook Pro 15 inch unibody A1286. Will it fit? And will there be more heat coming from a larger drive? If so is it advisable to avoid a larger drive because of heat issues?
View 2 Replies View RelatedWell my last couple of Time Machine back ups have been huge like 60GBs and my initial was approx. 100gbs, I thought time machine made smaller backups after the initial one not huge ones. Also, it seems like something is eating up my hdd space; last week I had 100gbs free and now I have only 50 and no major changes have been made to my mac so I am quite confused. Also, in my Music Folder I see a list of all of my artists and a folder called iTunes with all my apps but it also has a folder in that called iTunes Music which is 32 gb. That folder has a list of all my artists but I don't see a couple in the other folder that are in my iTunes Music folder. I used Disk Inventory X which gave me 10gbs.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a small capacity external hard drive. I don't download and store music, movies, et cetera so I purchased a 250gb Western Digital portable one.
I want to mostly back up my writing (I do a lot), some photos (for convenience, although I don't have many), and files (I have client information on my computer). So for the most part, they are small things.
If my computer was to crash, my worry is mostly that my writing would be lost. My question is, if I use Time Machine, does it automatically back up everything ? Or do I select things? Am I better off dragging and dropping? I am new to this.
Also, I also run Parallels as for one of my jobs, I have to use a Windows based program. I don't do anything else in my Parallels. If I was to lose the info on my computer, and Parallels was backed up, would I have to reinstall it on a new computer? This concerns me as I no longer have my Windows CD that I needed for the initial installation.
I was just wondering if there is anyway to use time machine as an external hard drive? i'm running low on storage with my macbook and wanted to move some files to it permanently for storage
View 3 Replies View RelatedI was trying to move all of my movies on to my external hard drive and I copied all of them (took two hours) on there. Then I deleted all but three of them off my computer and emptied the trash. I then look back at my hard drive's files and they aren't there!!! The only thing that was there was the 3 files.
But I also have time machine saved to update my external hard drive. It did and I can see the previous computer times/events/whatever you want to call it. I go to Hard drive>backups.backupdb>My Mac Book Pro>2010-05-04>Macintosh HD>Users>Me>Movies which only shows my iMovie library. I do the same thing but with Music>iTunes>iTunes media>movies to which only one file shows up.

My question is how do I get Time Machine to work on the external hard drive while it its plugged into the Time Capsule? When I connect the external hard drive to Time Capsule, it recognizes it and I can access the other data I have on the drive. However, when I try to access the Time Machine backups I get The alias ... could not be opened, as well as getting a failed message when I try to do a backup. 'Cept I haven't a clue about which external hard drives are the best, or in particular... which one is the best.
I'm assuming firewire is the way to go for speed, but I have no idea how large a drive I'd need. My internal drive is 500GB. Anyone have any suggestions for a durable, quiet external drive? What can I expect to pay?
We also have a second 20" 2.4 Ghz iMac in the house that has the 320GB drive in it. It will be getting the Leopard upgrade as well, so I could use a suggestion for an external drive for Time Machine for that iMac too.
