PowerPC :: Hard To Read / Write To External Drives With G5

Sep 17, 2007

This issue has been killing my work flow for quite awhile. I have a G5 dual 2.0. I can barely read or write files to an external hard drive. Say I try and copy 1.56GB of audio (12 files) from my external drive it will start to copy then stop at 500mb for minutes then start moving as normal and stop again around 900 for minutes.. then again at 1.4. This also happens when writing.

Here is the confusing part. This happens with two external drives (different models) with firewire 400, 800 and USB. I have reinstall OSx. I have repaired permissions and ran repair disc on everything. These hard drives work FLAWLESS with my Macbook Pro as well. Gr what can this be? It takes forever to copy data to or from a drive which is often how I transfer audio between my desktop and laptop. I should soon have Mac Pro money and this crappy G5 can go out the window. I am on 10.4..

OS X :: Does Mac Write Any Unique Info To External Drives On Mount?

Dec 24, 2009

I've always wondered this: I know when you mount a drive (USB stick, FireWire external or even an iPod of some sort) in OS X, a few invisible files get created. And if you have an AV program, sometimes it will write files to the drive. Same with some other third party apps. Do any of these files contain personal information, or things unique to the machine? Like user name or directory structure or things of that nature? I assume they don't, or else you'd probably see it mentioned more often, but I was wondering if anyone had a definitive answer..?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Read And Write To External Hard Drives?

Apr 13, 2012

hey all, this has been really frustrating for me today. i want to be able to write to an external HDD that's formatted in NTFS. today i find out it isn't possible to write to this file system on a Mac and that on FAT32 it is possible. however, FAT32 can't address files larger than 4GB so this hurts me a lot. are there any other file systems that'll allow me to read and write from a Mac? my goal was to use freeNAS to build a NAS with an old tower and connect my external hard drives to it, but if i can't write to them this may not be possible.

OS X :: After 10.6.3 / Cannot Write To SMB Network Drives Anymore?

Mar 31, 2010

Since the update to 10.6.3, I'm not able to write to mounted SMB drivers anymore. Reading and copying, as well as changing filesnames does work properly, but I cannot save any new files to the drives.

Following error appears:
The operation cant be completed because you dont have permission to access some of the items.

I've checked the NAS (Thecus N5200 Pro), but all permissions are correct. Same thing from a second Mac with 10.6.3 to the sames SMB mounted drivers.

MacBook Pro :: Paragon HFS+ For Windows Can't Read / Write Flash Drives

Apr 10, 2012

I use Paragon HFS+ for Windows which allows me to read and write to my HFS formatted drives. It works great for any external hard drive I use but when I use a flash drive it doesn't work. I format both my external hard drives and flash drives the same way, I use Disk Utility, I format them using Mac Extended Journaled and GUID partition scheme. When plugging in my flashdrive, my Windows 7 PC will not mount them. Disk Manager shows 3 partitions: EFI, Fat32 and some empty space. If I format my flash drives using the Master Boot Record partition scheme they work great.

So, here's what I have so far: External hard drives work fine when formatted with the GUID Partition scheme. (Mac extended journaled) Hard drives also show 3 partitions in Windows Disk Manager: EFI, HFS and empty spaceFlashdrives show 3 partitions but oddly enough the second partition shows as FAT32. But is completely unusable in Windows 7 Flash drives have to be formatted using the Master Boot Record partition scheme when formatting them as HFS+ volumes in order to work on Windows 7Windows 7 supports GUID partition schemes.

What is causing my Macbook Pro to treat an external hard drive differently then a flash drive when formatting them? Experience and common sense tells me that it shouldn't matter whether it's a flash drive or spindle drive, both should format the same. Granted, I could simply use exFat or FAT32 on my flash drives for cross platform compatibility however I prefer to use HFS+ when possible.

OS X :: Don't Have Write Access To Some Folders On Desktop

I have a strange problem, which I don't seem to be able to properly troubleshoot, even with searching the 6U with and without our beloved Free Porn.

Btw, I solved the problem in between writing this post, but if anyone wants to share some light onto the situation, I invite you to read the following, as I am still flabbergasted by it and want to know, why I can't do what I want to do as laid out in the section below.

OS X :: Cannot Get Write Access To Remote AFP Share

Jan 24, 2010

I cannot get write access to a remote AFP share. Here's what I have: Mac Mini which is where the share exists. I have file sharing turned on, the desired directories enabled via "system prefs" and both my local mac mini account and "administrators" group set for read and write access. The "everyone" group has "read only" access which seems to be enabled by default - I did not remove this permission. My local mac mini account also has my MobileMe account listed as the MobileMe user name in the account manager.

My account on my macbook has a different short name. When I connect to the mac mini via Finder (under "shared"), it connects using the mobileme account. I can view the AFP share on the mac mini, but I cannot write to it. I click "disconnect" and reconnect using my mac mini's user account (the admin level account that is set for read and write access in file sharing) and password, but the results are the same (read-only access). When I go back into the top level finder window for the mac mini, it shows it is connected as the mobile me account despite the fact that I purposely disconnected and re-connected using the mac mini account.

More info since original post: The pop-up errors I get when I try to write a file are (in order): "You may need to enter the name and password for an administrator on this computer to change the item named family-2009" (note family -2009 is an iMovie project). I'm not changing family-2009 and there is no remote copy, so I don't understand what it claims needs admin rights to change. If I click "continue" - The item "family-2009" contains one or more items you do not have permission to read. do you want to copy the items you are allowed to read?"

It's my iMovie project that I created from scratch, so I don't know where this bunk about not having read access to some of the items is coming from. If I click "continue" the final error is - The operation cannot be completed becaue an item with the name "family-2009" already exists. There is no such file with that name on the remote AFP share, so I don't know WTF this thing is trying to do. It's complaining about having read access to an existing file when the permissions are set for read and write and the file doesn't exist. Both systems are fully patched Leopard.

OS X :: Don't Have Permission But Have Read / Write Access?

I'm trying to copy over an ISO file (legit one mind you) and OSX is telling me that I cannot move the file because I don't have permissions for it. So I do the usual, get info, check the permissions box, but the funny thing is, I do have Read and Write access but it still pops up that error.

I'm stumped on how to fix this... any ideas?

Here's a screenshot to clarify what I'm talking about.

MacBook Pro :: No Write Access On Internal HDD?

Jun 21, 2014

I have a mid 2010 MacBook Pro. It's running almost daily since 2010 and now weird things happen after some uptime when I try to do stuff in Finder:

"The operation can’t be completed. An unexpected error occurred (error code -50)." and if I try to sudo:

$ sudo ls

> sudo: Can't mkdir /var/db/sudo/username: File exists

> ... ls output ...

Furthermore, I cannot do anything write-related anymore, no deletion of files in the Finder, no opening of webpages. Eventually, I have to force shut it down by holding the power button.

I already wiped the HDD and reinstalled Mavericks from USB -- only to have this exact problem one day after setting everything up again. I even bought a new HDD, which worked quite well for a couple of days, only to result in the same error again.

Additional info:

OS X 10.9.3
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 (upgraded from 2 GB three years ago)
250 GB HDD / now 1 TB HDD
No dual boot / Bootcamp

ITunes :: Error On Ripping CDs - Don't Have Write Access

Apr 17, 2010

1) I had some problems after changing my acct. name, then changing it back again. I thought it was all sorted out, but then started getting an error message when I try to rip CDs in iTunes: You don't have write access for your iTunes Media folder or a folder within it. To change I tried Get Info & have RW permission, so I don't know what to do about that. Other than ripping CDs, iTunes seemed to be working fine however after a week of the above problem, it has developed something new that may be related. I can no longer use Get Info within iTunes to correct or add to entries about the albums like composer, tracks, disk, etc Perhaps that is another RW permission issue.

ITunes :: Lost Write Access After Migrating To New MBP

Jul 24, 2010

MBP 2.4 ghz running 10.6.4
iTunes 9.2.1 (4)
Factory refurbished model that I have been using now for about 10 days.

I got a new macbook pro. Now, I had been keeping my iTunes library on an external HD but I decided to migrate the library over to the new computers HD by hooking up the external, and using the Add To Library to import all my tunes. I have never purchased any music from the iTunes store, but I did have some free downloads from them. I went to get a free compilation from the iTunes store last night, and got this message. iTunes couldn't download your purchase. You don't have write access for your iTunes media folder or a folder within it. Change permissions (in the Finder) and then chose Store > Check for available downloads

Well, I did all this, made the permissions both Read and Write in all the folders associated with the iTunes library... and still no luck. I reset the path to the library in the iTunes preferences panel >advanced settings, and still no luck. I then decided to reauthorize the account, but got this message when I entered my iTunes password. There was an error storing your authorizations information on this computer. The required file was not found or has a permission error. Correct this permissions problem and try again, or de authorize this computer if the permissions cannot be changed.

Now, I have found tonnes of info about this (or similar) problems on the net, but no one seems to have posted a consistent fix. Proposed solutions vary from fixing the folder permissions in the Finder (which I have done 3 or 4 times now), to messing with the media library xml file, to dragging the whole library to the desk, restarting iTunes, then importing the original library back to the rebuilt iTunes folder. I imagine that if this is a DRM issue (which I suspect it is) then that last solution won't fix the problem either. Will doing an Archive and Reinstall solve the issue?

Can I just throw away all of the DRM tainted items and regain access to my iTunes library? How would I even identify which songs are even using DRM coding? I'm considering doing an Archive and Reinstall anyway, because this computer is acting a bit buggy. I'm not sure if this could be a hardware issue since this was a refurb model, but I haven't done all the hardware test from the OS disc yet, since I've been busy reinstalling software and libraries from my old computer.

Applications :: Unknown User Has Read And Write Access To My Policy Key?

Apr 13, 2009

so my iMac running leopard on my college campus was forced to install this application called "Policy Key.app" This program allows me to connect to the internet for my campus, yet, as I dug through the permissions of this app, I see that there is system access, admin access, myself with access, and then...."Unknown" with read and write capabilities. Is this normal? I assume the write part must be to deactivate my internet if I am doing something illegal obviously but I must say I feel uncomfortable knowing that there is the "Unknown" user that can read and write my internet access levels.

Windows On Mac :: Access Data On Partition - Full Read / Write?

Nov 11, 2009

Been a Mac convert now for about a year and haven't really looked back. So far the only thing keeping me from going straight Mac is Quicken. Hopefully this spring Intuit will get the latest Quicken for Mac right, but I digress. I am currently running VM3 to boot into Windows 7 in order to use Quicken, and a few other things from time to time. But this new Modern Warfare 2 game kinda has me thinking I might need to install Windows 7 via Boot Camp in order to give it a try. With that said, if I install W7 via BC I'm I able to access the data on my Mac partition, and with full read/write access? Furthermore, do I understand correctly that VM will then allow me to access my BC install from within it, thereby having the best of both?

When I click Continue, it shows the same dialog but it says You need permission to perform this action and the buttons Try Again or Cancel, I've repeatedly clicked Try Again and it does nothing.

AIM: I want to be able to access the USB drive and the printer over internet. I dont have a MobileMe acc, and i dont want to create one. I know it would be much easier if the AirPort would be hooked up to the phone line directly, but Its not possible...
