OS X :: Don't Have Permission But Have Read / Write Access?
Mar 2, 2010
I'm trying to copy over an ISO file (legit one mind you) and OSX is telling me that I cannot move the file because I don't have permissions for it. So I do the usual, get info, check the permissions box, but the funny thing is, I do have Read and Write access but it still pops up that error.
I'm stumped on how to fix this... any ideas?
Here's a screenshot to clarify what I'm talking about.

so my iMac running leopard on my college campus was forced to install this application called "Policy Key.app" This program allows me to connect to the internet for my campus, yet, as I dug through the permissions of this app, I see that there is system access, admin access, myself with access, and then...."Unknown" with read and write capabilities. Is this normal? I assume the write part must be to deactivate my internet if I am doing something illegal obviously but I must say I feel uncomfortable knowing that there is the "Unknown" user that can read and write my internet access levels.

Been a Mac convert now for about a year and haven't really looked back. So far the only thing keeping me from going straight Mac is Quicken. Hopefully this spring Intuit will get the latest Quicken for Mac right, but I digress. I am currently running VM3 to boot into Windows 7 in order to use Quicken, and a few other things from time to time. But this new Modern Warfare 2 game kinda has me thinking I might need to install Windows 7 via Boot Camp in order to give it a try. With that said, if I install W7 via BC I'm I able to access the data on my Mac partition, and with full read/write access? Furthermore, do I understand correctly that VM will then allow me to access my BC install from within it, thereby having the best of both?

I know this is lame, but I searched and can't find a solution. When I click on a day in ical it says it is a Read-only calendar. I repaired permissions, but it still says read only. The strange part is, in the Get Info screen, it says Read-Write for all the users.

I'm buying an external hard drive to use as a backup for my MacBook but also as a network drive that all the computers connected to my router (Airport Extreme) can use. There are two MacBooks and two PCs that connect to the network. I only need my MacBook to be able to write to the hard drive but I need the two PCs to be able to access and use the files on the hard drive. I was going to get a 1TB external and give it two partitions. The first partition is going to be the Time Machine backup for my MacBook and the other will be accessed by all computers on the network. What format will the second partition need to be so that both MacBooks and both PCs can view and use the files? Also what external hard drive would you recommend?

I'm trying to install software on my MacBook. When I select my hard drive applications folder for installation, I get this message: Error! You do not have write permissions to the chosen installation destination. Please choose a different location for installation.
I am on the admin account, so I don't know why it's giving me this. In my weak understanding of computers, I thought perhaps I could repair disk permissions. After running that, I ended up with a gazillion errors, mostly related to my wireless printer, but the following, as well:
ACL found but not expected on "Applications/Utilities".
ACL found but not expected on "Applications".
ACL found but not expected on "Library".
I don't know if that relates or not. How can I give myself permission to install programs in my hard drive applications folder? Where else should I install this program (and does it matter)? If you know iTunes, would you also take a look at this thread of mine, which didn't get much traffic?

When I started uni years ago, we were given free 2G USB flash drives. The drives were partitioned in half so that there was a read/write partition to use for whatever and the other partition is read only - it has a bunch of files relevant to us students and links to all the relevant uni webpages and such. Now that I've finished uni I'd like to use my drive as one whole read/write-able drive. But I'm having trouble getting rid of the read only partition. The get info panel shows that I have only permission to read and there is no option there to change that.
Disk Utility will not allow me to erase, format or re-partition the drive (I can erase the read/write portion though). All the options to do anything to the drive are greyed out, presumably because I cannot write to it. Is there some way I can give myself permission to write to this drive? It is a perfectly good drive and it seems a shame to waste half of its space on stuff I will never use again. I am running OS X - 10.5.6 on an iMac G5 and the drive is formatted as: MS-DOS (FAT12). I have also tried to erase/reformat it in Vista, but cannot because of the write protection.

I installed snow leopard on my macbook pro (17") and now I can't update Path Finder. I am new to the mac (former windows user)and I just purchased Path Finder but now I can't install the dowloaded update. I have never told that purchased software does not have permissions to write to the application's directory. Below is the full update error:
Update Error!:
"Path Finder does not have permission to write to the application's directory! Are you running off a disk image? If not, ask your system administrator for help."
I am the administrator on my macbook. How can I give permission to a purchased software to write to the application directory? Please help anybody. The same thing happens to Opera update.

Sometime in the past couple of days I lost write permission to my own home directory (/Users/yalla) - The attributes for my homedirectory are correct, but there are extended attributes as well, and I believe this is where the problem lies.
For Documents, Downloads etc, I am allowed to create/modify/delete files and directories, but under my pure homedirectory ~yalla I am all of a sudden unable to write, meaning I cannot create for instance a new .bashrc (not that I need to since I already have one), or create new catalogues.
I have tried both from Terminal and from Finder, and I am not allowed to create new directories under ny homedir. By going to Finder and going under "Get Info" for my homedir, I have gone to Sharing & Permissions and changed from Read Only to Read & Write which seems to fix it. I have however not been there before and made any changes, and I am therefore worried that by changing this to R&W I am fixing a symptom and not the core problem.

I have the PIONEER DVR-104 Drive in my MDD Dual 1Ghz G4 that has stopped reading DVD's. It still reads CD's just fine and will write CD-R's just fine. To get arround the problem (I need to be able to atleast read DVD's) I've installed a plain DVD drive in bay 2. This problem existed before I upgraded to 10.2.4 so it was there under 10.2.3 as well. Toast and the Apple System Profiler recognize it as a DVR-104, the proper drive. Lets see what else can I tell you... We are using Apple branded media. When I do drop a DVD-R in the drive whether blank or written it trys to read it for about 30 sec then spits it back out.

I notice the security news that FireWire could be used to bypass your login password because it accesses your RAM.
That got me to thinking: Can you use FireWire to read/write the RAM of the 'puter next to you and could you use this "feature" to turn that RAM into a RAM disk for fast access?

I have an external Transcend HD, which has been working perfectly fine for around 5 months now. It is NTFS, and I use NTFS-3g and Macfuse. Been running fine. Was able to read and write. Suddenly I am only able to read though. I go into the "Get Info" pane and the option to choose whether I want to read and write, or read only is gone, and all that it says is "You can read only". getting this back to read and write is really appreciated. I really need this disk.

What is the standard tool to test your hard drives read/write speeds? I'd like to test my new SSD to see how fast it really is. I've heard you cant trust XBench for that which is the only thing I have to use.
