I may end up getting another external hard drive & would like to be able to stay with NTFS so I can use it with either PCs or macs, there is a PC in my home & I would like to be able to use it between the PC & my macbook pro. Does anybody know of good reliable software that does not hog resources that will enable me to read & write NTFS on my macbook pro?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Windows/DOS formatted external harddrive adn want to access/write/delete data from it using my MCP with Lion OS. I downloaded NTFS-3G 2011.1.15 and installed and restarted my Mac but then got this error when OS started and I cant see my Windows external disk any more. I am not 100% sure if the format of this disk was FAT or NTFS.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am sure many of you heard that Snow Leopard was supposed to have native read/write for NTFS partitions. Apple supported NTFS R/W in older SL builds but I guess decided to not to go with it for some reason, however support is still present. For this, you need to modify your /etc/fstab file to mount NTFS partitions for read and write.
First, uninstall NTFS-3G/Paragon if installed.
Open Terminal.app (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal)
Type "diskutil info /Volumes/volume_name" and copy the Volume UUID (bunch of numbers).
Backup /etc/fstab if you have it, shouldn't be there in a default install.
Type "sudo nano /etc/fstab".......................
i had a External Harddrive.Currently i can Read//Write on it in Windows PC(Windows7)But when i use the same drive in Mac i can only read...but can't able to write. How to resolve this issue

I had this external as FAT32 before which was not problematic until I started downloading 720 and 1080 .mkv movies that were larger than 4gb. So I reformatted to NTFS which will accept files larger than 4gb but realized that OSX don't be got the ability to write to NTFS.

After a lifetime of owning PC's I finally purchased a MacBook Pro running OS X. I installed Parallels Desktop 5, Windows XP, and several Windows apps to have dual functionality. Now I need to write to my NTFS ext. hard drive where I backup everything. It has 800gb of space left, so it would be a shame to get a new one just b/c I have a Mac now. I first installed MacFuse and then NTFS-3G. Now when I reboot, the ext. HD won't mount at all. What have I done wrong?
View 6 Replies View RelatedSome time ago I had a problem with my iMac. Turned out my internal HD was broken so I got a new one.
The problem is that after I got my iMac with the new INTERNAL HD back, I was unable to write data on my EXTERNAL (Toshiba) HD, which until then I had no problems with. When I checked the format of it, it now says NTFS.
As I have more than 1 TB of data on it which would take forever to back up, is there another way to change it's status and write on it again? I was once able to do it, so I don't know where the problem is.....

Before you peek into this topic to say "OS X can only read NTFS, not write to it", save the effort; I already know that. I have a 1TB WD MyBook Studio. I partitioned this drive into 2 parts, an Mac OS Extended partition and, using Win 7, an NTFS partition. Now my MBP can mount and see its partition just fine, but it refuses to mount the other NTFS partition, seeing it in Disk Utility as MS-DOS (Fat) format with a weird name. How do I get the MBP to mount the NTFS partition?

I was able to write to the NTFS drive from my Mac using MacFUSE and NTFS-3G. A few days ago, the hard drive showed up as 'read-only', and is still that way now. I've tried repairing disk permissions, reinstalling the NTFS applications, nothing seems to change the write permissions back.
View 14 Replies View RelatedThis issue has been killing my work flow for quite awhile. I have a G5 dual 2.0. I can barely read or write files to an external hard drive. Say I try and copy 1.56GB of audio (12 files) from my external drive it will start to copy then stop at 500mb for minutes then start moving as normal and stop again around 900 for minutes.. then again at 1.4. This also happens when writing.
Here is the confusing part. This happens with two external drives (different models) with firewire 400, 800 and USB. I have reinstall OSx. I have repaired permissions and ran repair disc on everything. These hard drives work FLAWLESS with my Macbook Pro as well. Gr what can this be? It takes forever to copy data to or from a drive which is often how I transfer audio between my desktop and laptop. I should soon have Mac Pro money and this crappy G5 can go out the window. I am on 10.4..
I recently borrowed my brother's laptop to use as a media station for listening to music from, and watching movies, in order to free up some space on my main macbook. In trying to migrate some files over, I discovered that my hard drive, a 320 GB WD Elements drive, is having some problems which I've never encountered before. It has always worked fine in the past, but now I can't transfer any files to or from it, from either computer. In all of my troubleshooting, I've gotten various errors, (-36, -50), and various messages saying how the device can't be read or written from, or how some files contian unreadable data, etc.Disk Utility found an unused node when verifying the disk, and notified me that the disk needed to be repaired.I then used Disk Utility, which said it was able to successfully repair it, but the same problem remains, and after verifying the disk, it still says it needs to be repaired.I've tried to find any files that may be causing the problem, and was finally able to delete a seemingly troublesome file that was stuck in my trash bin from the external drive after trying various apps, (ie Trash It, Cocktail, What's Keeping Me?).This didn't end up solving anything...I've used terminal to eliminate some other potentially problematic files, with no luck still, and I'm not too confident with Terminal so I don't want to be messing around too much without more guidance.
I've used Disk Warrior to try to solve the problem, but still with no success.When I use the app to Check All Files and Folders, it does so for only a few seconds, then reports that "An unexpected error ocurred while attempting to perform file operations" for several files, and that several files' "Property list is damaged and cannot be repaired". When using Disk Warrior to REBUILD the drive, the app pauses for about 15 seconds, then says that it can't be rebuilt because it is in use.Again, I've used the What's Keeping Me? app to kill any activity with the drive, and the same error occurs.I've spent a lot of time trying to sort this out.

hey all, this has been really frustrating for me today. i want to be able to write to an external HDD that's formatted in NTFS. today i find out it isn't possible to write to this file system on a Mac and that on FAT32 it is possible. however, FAT32 can't address files larger than 4GB so this hurts me a lot. are there any other file systems that'll allow me to read and write from a Mac? my goal was to use freeNAS to build a NAS with an old tower and connect my external hard drives to it, but if i can't write to them this may not be possible.

When I went to access my folders on my external HD, the folders are all locked, with Sharing and Permission section in the Information "Everyone: Read" only! I can't change any of the information or move things! All of them are locked and "read only." I know how to change it, but only manually, individually. I have several hundreds of folders and I don't want to manually change all of them to "Read & Write." Is their a way to let me re-set the folders to "Read & Write" easily??

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an external Transcend HD, which has been working perfectly fine for around 5 months now. It is NTFS, and I use NTFS-3g and Macfuse. Been running fine. Was able to read and write. Suddenly I am only able to read though. I go into the "Get Info" pane and the option to choose whether I want to read and write, or read only is gone, and all that it says is "You can read only". getting this back to read and write is really appreciated. I really need this disk.
View 3 Replies View Relatedso my iMac running leopard on my college campus was forced to install this application called "Policy Key.app" This program allows me to connect to the internet for my campus, yet, as I dug through the permissions of this app, I see that there is system access, admin access, myself with access, and then...."Unknown" with read and write capabilities. Is this normal? I assume the write part must be to deactivate my internet if I am doing something illegal obviously but I must say I feel uncomfortable knowing that there is the "Unknown" user that can read and write my internet access levels.

i backed everything up on an external hard drive so i can keep it until i received my imac. now i have my imac, and when i try to transfer over the files to my imac, or another external hard drive, sometimes the copying stops and says something along the lines of "you do not have permission to copy this file"
so i guess some of my files got messed up, putting them in "Read only" mode.
i know i can go to "Get info" and then manually change it to "read and write" mode but honestly theres so many files it would take a lot of time.
is there a script, or an app i can run that could scan my whole external hard drive so it will go thru each file in their own specific folder and change the permissions to "read all write all" without me doing it manually one by one?
I know this is lame, but I searched and can't find a solution. When I click on a day in ical it says it is a Read-only calendar. I repaired permissions, but it still says read only. The strange part is, in the Get Info screen, it says Read-Write for all the users.

There are two MacBooks and two PCs that connect to the network. I only need my MacBook to be able to write to the hard drive but I need the two PCs to be able to access and use the files on the hard drive. I was going to get a 1TB external and give it two partitions. The first partition is going to be the Time Machine backup for my MacBook and the other will be accessed by all computers on the network. What format will the second partition need to be so that both MacBooks and both PCs can view and use the files? Also what external hard drive would you recommend?
