OS X :: Disk Utility - "Security Options" Grayed Out?
Oct 6, 2009
I am trying to 'Erase free space' using the disk utility on my macbook. I have read that you can choose to 'overwrite with zeros' via the 'Security options' tab. However, my 'security options' tab is grayed out (see pic below). Please can you tell me how I can access the 'security options' and therefore free the disk space and overwrite with zeros??

I'm trying to repair my hard drive. I restarted from the OS X Mac Mini install CD (holding down the letter C when I heard the chime), opened Disk Utility from the Utilities folder, selected my hard drive image, but the "verify disk" and "repair disk" options are grayed out. I'm at a loss as to how to proceed.

If I remembered correctly, I was able to verify my system drive before.

I can boot into bootcamp with no problems. I have been wanting to be able to open the bootcamp in Parallels. Here is the issue:
1. The partition 'disk0s3' is greyed out in Disk Utility. It is not mounted. Mounting does nothing.
2. For reference, the Windows 7 is formatted as NTFS. It is a Windows 7 64-bit install
3. Verify disk does the following:
Verifying volume "disk0s3" ** /dev/disk0s3
Invalid BS_jmpBoot in boot block: efbbbf
Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Click Repair Disk.
4. repairing does the following:
Verify and Repair volume "disk0s3" ** /dev/disk0s3
Invalid BS_jmpBoot in boot block: efbbbf
Volume repair complete.Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.Error: Disk Utility can"t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
I have stuff on the Windows partition that I don't want deleted. I'm really stuck on this -obviously, I can just continue to boot into bootcamp, I just would rather open it from Parallels. I'm not sure what or if I made some mistake in setting up Bootcamp, I thought I followed the directions to that. I do know I formatted the partition as NTFS during the install - as I think Windows 7 requires it. I have tried installing NTFS-3G - it is installed, but didn't do any good when trying to mount the drive.

I have an external hard drive that was used on a PC. I want to use it on a Mac. I went into disk utility and did an erase. (Extended Journaled and in security options changed it to zero out data). I can now use it on the Mac how ever it is telling me that there is 54.1 MB of used space. I want to have access to this. How do I do it?

Bought a used 4 TB Seagate drive, formatted it , checked the speed 150 MB/s read/write and made a partition. Apparently it worked perfect.
However after this first partition the drive is behaving erratically. I can not modify partitions anymore nor delete them. Repair disk is not finding any problem either from the system or from the recovery partition.
I am starting to believe the disk is damaged. Beside the partition problem the disk is behaving fine.

Ever since i upgraded to Yosemite my iCloud has been messing up. It shows i’m signed in but won’t display further details like used & unused space in my quota. It also doesn’t let me set up family neither does it let me check or uncheck options. Everything is just greyed out even when i enter my iCloud password it stays the same; Nothing happens. Tried over and over for weeks now; No success. It won't sign out also. I think there's something wrong somewhere. I have Reset my Keychain so many times to no success.

I just bought a new iMac and moved all my data in from a Time Capsule. I frequently select "all images" and use the Quick Fixes option within Add Effect under the photos tab on the top left corner of the screen to run a batch process. But now when I try it all of the options are grayed out. I can highlight a couple of images and the option is available where normally running a batch is a non-issue.

Admittedly, I'm one of the not-quite-thinking-straight early adopters of Snow Leopard. I performed an update install & everything went quite well (very fast boot times, etc.) However, my Photoshop CS3 has some weird things happening (all other CS3 apps work fine!). I can open, edit & save images with no probs. But, there are numerous menu options that are grayed out, like "File>Quit"!! In order to quit the app, I have to force quit every time. Also, several other commands in the Path window are grayed out. I have not tried reinstalling SL, since everything else is working perfectly.

I am using iPhoto 09 and have selected a photo album to put into a book and am going to the option called Book at the bottom of the screen and then the selection at the top for Book Type. I have options such as hard cover, soft cover, and wire-bound software. The problem is they are all greyed out. Why is this? Do I have to somehow install these themes or book types? I have a photo album I have put together that I want to send to Apple to print.

I have a mbp 13" with snow leopard. I go to disk utilities to verify my disk (Macintosh HD) and it says I need to repair it after I start the comp with a disk like the mac osx installation cd. I do that and then verify disk again (because the "repair disk" is still grey/un-clickable) and it gives me the same message. How do I repair the disk?

I have a 4 TB Western Digital external hard drive that I use with my MacBook Pro, running Mavericks. When I plug it in, I get "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer", with the option of either ejecting or ignoring. So, I ignore it, and the drive is, in fact, both readable and writeable. So, this is a minor annoyance at worst, unless it truly does become unreadable.
I opened Disk Utility. The disk is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled), there's a single partition of the proper size, and both the disk and the partition show no errors when I run Verify Disk. The disk permissions buttons are both greyed out, and owners enabled shows "no".
This doesn't happen with other external hard drives I use. However, when I connect the other hard drives, they appear in Disk Utility immediately below my internal hard drive and above my SuperDrive, while the problematic external drive appears below the line that appears underneath SuperDrive.

last week my mac (1 year old iMc, 2.4ghz intel chip, 4gb ram, system 10.5.7) went all funny, everything was working slowly - so I restarted, same thing, I restarted again and it just went to the grey screen with the spinning ball.Ok so I restarted from my tiger disk and it could see the drive, so I tried to install a new system and it got right to the end of the installation then said because of a disk error it couldn't do it.
Ok so I bought an external HD, put a system on and started up from there - now the drive came up, but things were slow still, it took forever to copy anything so I tried disk utility, it couldn't repair it. I tried drive genius, same thing. DiskWarrior 4.1.1 same thing.
Now I tried again a few times and the programmes took forever to start up but now disk utility opens after about 30 mins and can see the drive, but it's lost it's name and I can't even repair or repair disk permisssions. Drive Genius can see it but not repair and same for Disk Warrior, the 'rebuild' tool is greyed out.
It's a 500GB drive and only has 3GB spare on it, it has loads and loasds of stuff on there, work, music, films, all my preferences, passwords and of course all my software - I do have a backup of some stuff, my photos luckily enough - but I still need to get it fixed.
Now what can I do? Is there anything in terminal I can do? Any other ideas anyone? I'm desperate for help.I have downloaded Data Rescue II and it has been gathering device information for an hour, I'm hoping it will carry on and later on I can start recovering. But in all honestly is there anyway of fixing the drive? And if not can I recover and then do I need to re-format? And if so will it work ok once formatted? Also any ideas why this would have happened?

After I erase the hard disk it shows 74.5gb free, almost. It says there is 42.3mb of space being used by 2 files which I understand are used for read write or partitioning or whatever.
When I then leave disk utility and go to the actual installer, the destination disk (untitled - 74.5gb) shows only 73.9gb free space. What is taking up an additional 500mb of space on the hard drive?
Apple support told me that somehow the disk has been altered and I lost space on the disk or I am now using a seperate partition that isn't showing up. Disk utility shows only one partition with 74.5gb free space. He told me I can find information about how to 'merge' the disk on the apple support section under troubleshooting articles for disk utility. I have been unable to locate this information.

I have a 2TB Western Digital My Book Studio FW800 external that has 5 partitions, connected to my 2011 iMac. I had help doing the partitions and don't really remember the reasoning, but one is just for my SuperDuper! backup, one is Miscellaneous, one for movie clips off my camcorder, one for misc scanned photo's and one for my genealogy research. I back up using Time Machine to a Time Capsule and also to this WD hard drive with SuperDuper!
Recently I'm getting a pop up message that "Mac OS X can't repair the disk "Genealogy"'. And it needs to be reformatted. It's become a read only disk. When I look in Disk Utility it shows all the partitions as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" EXCEPT for the one in question. I also noticed that there are a lot of files with "date created" being the same date in 1969! These files may be letters I've written or photo's I added to that partition within the last few years.
I think I have to completely reformat the entire external hard drive to repair this, but I want to make sure. Because it's going to be a major hassle backing it all up to another external (having to get one first) and then figuring out how to make the files that have turned "read only" in that one partition, back to their original state! Does this sound right, that I have to reformat the entire external hard drive? And how do I get the read-only files back to their original state.

I get this question mark along with a folder when starting up. I tried holding down the option key when turning on the power and then I get an internet recovery along with a globe. I click on the arrow below it and it takes maybe 15 minutes to start up. Then i get this disk utilities screen. I'm now unable to do anything. When going into disk utility, disk 0 shows with Mac OS X base system underneath it. All the clickable buttons are faded out. Is there something wrong with the hardrive? and where could i get this fixed? There isn't a warranty on it.

I had windows vista installed but suddenly the audio decided to become faulty, after spending a day trying to fix it i realized I have a windows 7 install disc so i might as well just replace vista with windows 7. I didnt take care of vista or ever register it so it became quite a task to upgrade so i just deleted the partition and went to create a new one and just do a full install of windows 7.
I made the partition but the wrong format, so i removed it through boot camp assistant and created another, except now it keeps giving me the "back up the disk and use disk utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using boot camp assistant again" Now, I'd love to do this, except I have no idea what I'm doing and WHY this error has occured. After becoming frustrated I switched from my imac to my macbook pro and received the same error when trying to create a partition. So any help on exactly what I need to do would be a HUGE help. I only use windows for music production (I know, seems backwards, but I use Sony Acid and FL Studio so I'm stuck with Windows)
