OS X :: Disable Natural Sorting In Finder?

Jul 31, 2009

Anyone know of a way to disable natural sorting in Finder? i.e., I want my files to be sorted like:
1
10
2
25
3

Instead of:
1
2
3
10
25

I realize that natural sort is more... natural for humans, but when I have thousands of files that are named like 1267b63a37_461 with random number of letters and digits it's impossible to find anything when they're sorted naturally.

OS X :: Sorting Bunch Of Files By Kind In Finder

Aug 28, 2010

I just noticed sorting a bunch of files by 'kind' that it groups .php, .css, .js and others all as 'plain text file'. This is pretty useless, and I don't know if there's perhaps a way to set things up differently? I have all said files associated with Coda.

OS X :: Disable Resizing In Windows And Panels In Finder?

Aug 1, 2010

Someone used my computer here in the ofc during the weekend and resized the left panel really wide (i don't know why he did that). I tried to resize it back. It's the panel where you see the devices, shared, places, search for etc. When I reopen the window in finder the wide panel remains the same. I've been experimenting on how to put it back the way it used to but I couldn't get it back. Is there a way to disable window and panel resizing in mac osx so that this won't happen again?

Mac Mini :: Natural Progression Of Cube

Dec 30, 2010

While poking around on youtube I found Steve Jobs presenting the Cube in 2000. Seems like it was the mid level headless Mac people call for on the Internet. I wonder is there any interest macrumors? I like the Cube design and the way you were able to access the guts was very cool. Some have written that the Mini IS the natural progression of the Cube but I think the Mini is too locked down. It would be nice to make drive swapping a little more user friendly and maybe have a PCI slot (or two) available. Maybe even the ability to upgrade CPU/GPU. Think of it as a Mac for people who can't leave well enough alone but can't afford a Pro.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Disable The Finder Drag & Drop "flock" Animation?

Mar 25, 2012

this is a new feature in Lion, as stated here:[URL] Drag filesWhen you drag multiple files from one location to another, they flock together. An indicator also appears next to the cursor, telling you how many files you’re moving

Is there a way to disable that? Im on 2.8GHz Intel Core i7 iMac with 8GB of ram, and the seemingly small animation is driving me nuts.

I do a lot of dragging and dropping of groups of files onto scripts - photoshop scripts. and when i do that, you have to wait for the half a second or so for the little animation to happen.

OS X :: Mac Mail - Sorting Columns

Aug 12, 2009

Having switched recently from Entourage to Mac mail, there is one thing that i am missing and would like some help. I have a large inbox and normally find mail by clicking on the "From" column header, to sort the by the names of people sending me mails. Using entourage I would then press "d" on the keyboard to take me the first name begining with d. However in Mail when I press d, it takes me to the first email in which the subject line starts with a d. How do I get it to take me to the first name begining with d?

OS X :: Manually Sorting Files In Mac?

Jun 20, 2010

This may sound like a silly question, but I would like to know how I can arrange files manually in Mac? For example, if I have a folder of 100 photos in running order and I want to move London3.jpg between London 1.jpg and London 2.jpg, how do I do that? I've tried all the different sorting/viewing options. This is a very basic feature in Windows but I can't seem to do it in Mac. I am using Snow Leopard v 10.6.3. am getting very frustrated trying the various options to no avail.

OS X :: Sorting Files By Multiple Fields?

Nov 28, 2010

I am trying to sort my files by date and type. I can sort by Modified Date and File Type. Every time I sort by file type, the files are listed alphabetically within their folder type lists. This is not what I want. I want to see all the .rar files in chronological order

As I recall from Windows, I can sort by Modified Date, then Type, and the files will be listed by type, and then secondarily sorted by Date. Is there a way to do this on the Mac?

I'm on 10.6.5

Applications :: Sorting Out Columns In Excel

Dec 6, 2010

I want to sort out my finance spreadsheet where I have the category of the spending and the adjacent cell is the amount I spent.

[Category, Price]
[Gas , $50]
[Grocery , $80]
[Lunch , $15]
[Gas , $34.50]

What I'd like is for a function that can sort the categories into individual columns for the categories. So that this big list of purchases I have is sorted out into their own column that matches the category and then sums it too. Does this make sense? I was sort of avoiding any VBA for this but if thats how it has to be done then thats cool

Software :: View By List And Sorting By Name

My problem is with Finder view/sort by: I understand how to view and sort by the "Icon, List, Columns and Cover" and then by Name, Size etc. By my problem is when I am in say, "View by List" and sorting by Name. I get some files above and below folders, depending on the names. But is there any way to make this work like MS Windows "yes I know I said it", where sorting by name will list ALL folders first in alphabetical order and then the files below them in alphabetical order?

ITunes :: Not Properly Sorting Artists?

Mar 13, 2012

I sort my iTunes main music folder by Artists (A-Z) and for some reason, one of my artists' songs that start with an 'L' (Lana Del Rey) is in the middle of all the 'D' artists. The remainder of her songs are properly in the 'L' section, but I CANNOT figure out why this one song is in the 'D' section. I know it seems trivial, but it is actually driving me insane. I tried removing the song and re-adding it, but that did not work. I made sure all the information was consistent in the 'Get Info' area, but to no avail.

ITunes :: Sorting Order Keeps Changing On Its Own?

Apr 6, 2012

I use grid view sorted by artist. I click on an artist which brings me to the view of their albums as a list with album art on the side.Multiple times a day the sorting changes and I have to put it back. I'll click an artist and iTunes insists on sorting the albums alphabetically like this:

I'll then click on Album by Artist/Year:That way my albums are sorted chronologically, the way I want. If i go back to grid view by clicking All Artists, then view another artist, iTunes will keep my sorting order. As soon as I play a different song, click All Artists and choose another artist, iTunes will switch back to sorting albums alphabetically.

How do I force iTunes to sort my albums chronologically (or in any order I specify)? Why does it insist on sorting in only one way?

OS X :: Sorting Safari Bookmarks - Removing Duplicates

Nov 3, 2006

I tend to skim an article or web site and if I see something of interest I bookmark it for later review. The forgetful part comes in when I find myself bookmarking the same site several times. One thing I have to admit about the old IE that I used to use was it would warn you if there was a duplicate addy already in your favorites folder.

I'm stuck with tens of thousands of duplicate bookmarks (maybe even millions). Safari doesn't seem to offer any sorting solutions to weed out the duplicates or even organize them (by name would be cool) other than manually doing it. The prospect of manually picking out dups from the billions of links I have collected over the past few minutes alone is daunting. Any suggestions before I start sorting the trillions of links one at a time?

Applications :: Entourage Mail Sorting Using Rules

Jan 8, 2010

I've set up Rules and they work if I go to Messages/Apply Rules and click each of the rules. However, it does not apply the rules if I click All Rules at the head of that list. Someone advised me to check the boxes of each Rule under Tools/Rules so they would be applied when mail arrives, but that doesn't work. All of those boxes are checked and the rules are not applied when mail arrives.

1. Any idea how to make rules apply as mail arrives?
2. If that's not possible, do you know how to make "all rules" work so I don't have to highlight and click through each of the several rules?

Applications :: ITunes Compilation (sorting By Year)?

Feb 23, 2010

For some reason iTunes messes up my complaitions if I sort the albums by anything else than "album", such as year. It "breaks" the compilations up (you know what I mean) even if the year is the same. The weird thing is that some (up to 3 I've seen) tracks keep in bundles (even despite having different artists). Also, if the album stays "intact" by some wonder when I sort by year, the track order usually becomes totally random... (14, 4, 2, 13, 3, etc).

Yes, they are marked as compilations. Yes, album artist is the same (blank field). No, there are no typos.

As a disclaimer, I'm on a Windows machine. Can anyone tell me how to set the "sort by year" a default? It's pain to re-set it every time I launch iTunes.

Hardware :: Sorting Backups - RAID 1 Vs JBOD?

May 11, 2010

I was reading online that RAID1 is not a very reliable backup method, and is primarily for speedy recovery, over true reliability. I want to buy a dual-bay enclosure; something like the Icy Dock MB662UEAB-2S; [URL] People say they the best thing to do is get 2 separate external drives and backup with one, and use the other to make a copy of the backup drive, so you have 2 separate drives. Would it be fine to just to put 2x1TB drives into the enclosure, setup as JBOD then use Superduper to clone drive A onto drive B. Or is this not a good idea. Also can I stick a single drive into the IcyDock now and buy a second one later, as im a little shot of money at them moment. I got a 500GB old schol hardrive i could use for redundancy for the next 6 months, before i add a second drive into the enclosure.

OS X :: Sorting RAR Files - Modified / Created Date

May 18, 2010

I have a few RAR files I downloaded from the internet. They are sitting in my Downloads folder. These are some of the latest files I've downloaded, but when I sort by Modified and Created Date, they are scattered throughout the folder. The dates the files have are from before I even downloaded them.

I'm used to Windows where I could sort by Modified or Created date and I could see the latest files I downloaded in descending order from the most recent to the oldest. So, is OSX different, am I misunderstanding something or is there something weird about these RAR files? Furthermore, when I unpack the RAR files, their modified/created date is not today's date.
