OS X :: Comparable DVD VideoSoft Program For Mac?
Jan 24, 2010
I was wondering if anyone knows of a free or low cost program that's comparable to DVDVideoSoft? Here is the software in question: [URL]. I might just be very tired, but I looked all over the site and couldn't find the same software for Mac.

I am going to purchase a photo organizing/editing program soon (probably iPhoto), but I was wondering if there are any online, free or inexpensive programs that are comparable. The program that I buy must fit this criteria:
-Sufficient storage for many digital photos (This would eliminate Picasa's free service)
-Compatible with OS Tiger 10.4x
-Easy organization such as thumbnail viewing (or comparable to iPhoto's "Events")
Currently, I am trying to find a used copy of iLife '08, but many seem overpriced considering that iLife '09 is out. Ideally, I would like to spend no more than $35.

I'm trying to stay on a budget here and $800 for a display is a little steep. Is there a manufacturer like samsung or Dell that has a similar display to what Apple is offering but for a fraction of the cost.Something 22"+

I was thinking about a 3.06 Last Gen with 512MB Nvidia GeForce 8800. How does this card fair? is it similar to the Nividia GT 120 or 130? is it able to handle all games at least on low settings? (i.e. crysis, sims 3 etc)

HiI'm gonna purchase the 27" iMac but I'm curious about an aspect of monitors I've never considered. The iMac has a contrast ratio of 1000:1. When I look at ads for TVs, whether it's LCDs or plasmas, the contrast ratios are significantly greater. Can the contrast ratios of TVs be compared directly to computer monitors? Is for example the 1000:1 on the iMac exactly equivalent to a 1000:1 specification on a TV?

I currently own the latest edition of the Macbook Pro 17" that I've fully max'd out for ram after purchasing it. I use Adobe Premier CS4 for editing 1080p and 720p video. The Macbook Pro really can't keep up, making my editing hard to accomplish quickly, especially when rendering a video. It plays the video choppy when editing, which makes editing really hard to accomplish, obviously. It will do it, otherwise, with no problems, other than being slow as molasses when rendering. My question is should I get a IMac 27" fully loaded or a comparable Mac Pro, and what would be the benefits of one or the other for my application/use? I usually have PhotoShop, Premier, Mail, & Chrome open nearly all the time, and I want something that will smoothly play 1080p video when editing the movie and can render the video much quicker than my MBP.

I realize the L2 cache is half the size and the CPU is a bit slower, but if each machine had 4 gigs of ram, would they be more or less comparable in performance (aside from the GPU)?
Also, how does the Mini fare with Vista in BootCamp / Parallels?

Saw this article on Lifehacker today [URL]enigma-desktop and it got me to thinking about whether or not there was a way to do anything similar on Mac. I've been Googling and searching help forums but all I've found are desktop shots that basically feature different wallpapers and slight tweaks of icons and the dock.
Is there anything on the mac comparable to Rainmeter or Samurize on Windows?

Performance of Apple's new thin-and-light 13-inch MacBook Air is comparable to the notebook's 13-inch MacBook Pro counterpart, according to a new series of benchmark tests.
Macworld this week published the results of a thorough benchmark of Apple's new line of MacBook Air notebooks. Testing with Speedmark 6.5 found that the new models, despite having slower clock speeds than their predecessors, have significantly improved performance due to their reliance on flash storage.
Even when compared with the MacBook Pro, the flash storage helped the new 13-inch MacBook Air achieve a Speedmark 6.5 score higher than the 13-inch MacBook Pro with a 2.4GHz processor, released in mid-2010.
The new 1.86GHz 13-inch MacBook Air doubled its Speedmark score to 108, up from the score of 64 that the 2009 1.86GHz 13-inch MacBook Air achieved. Many of the gains came in drive tests, where it was found that the new lightweight notebook took 13 seconds to copy a 1GB file, compared with the 69 seconds that the 4200rpm hard drive of the previous model took.
Graphics performance was also improved, thanks to the nVidia GeForce 320M integrated chip. A test of Call of Duty 4 found that the new MacBook Air displayed more than three times as many frames per second as the nVidia GeForce 9400M found in the 2009 MacBook Air.
"Interestingly, the new 1.86GHz MacBook Air outperforms its predecessor in processor intensive tasks as well, even though they both use a Core 2 Duo processor with the same speed rating," author James Galbraith wrote. "iTunes encoding, Photoshop, HandBrake, MathematicaMark, and CineBench CPU tests were markedly faster on the new system. The new 1.86GHz MacBook Air was even faster than the previous 2.13GHz MacBook Air in all of those same tasks, despite the older system's supposedly faster Core 2 Duo processor."
The tests also found that the new 13-inch MacBook Air with a 1.86GHz processor is about 27 percent faster in the Speedmark 6.5 performance when compared to the smaller, 11.6-inch model with a 1.4GHz processor. The larger notebook was faster in all tests except for duplicating a 1GB file -- in both cases on that test, the integrated flash storage accomplished the task in just 13 seconds.
And the mid-2010 13-inch MacBook Pro, with a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo processor from mid-2010, reached a score of 106, two points less than the 108 that the 13-inch MacBook Air with a 1.86GHz processor received.
The MacBook Air does not stand a chance, however, when compared with the 15-inch MacBook Pro with an Intel Core i5 processor. In tests that could take advantage of the faster processor's HyperThreading technology, the 15-inch MacBook Pro earned scores twice as fast as the 13-inch MacBook Air, and nearly three times as fast as the 11-inch MacBook Air.
The mid-2010 15-inch MacBook Pro with a Core i5 processor earned a Speedmark 6.5 score of 132, making it the best of the Apple notebooks tested.
Macworld also did a stress test on the batteries of the new MacBook Air notebooks. It found that the 11-inch model looped a movie at full-screen full brightness and volume set at 1 for 3 hours and 40 minutes. The larger 13-inch model ran for 4 hours and 25 minutes. Both of those totals bested the 3 hours and 5 minutes achieved by the 2009 MacBook Air.
The latest benchmarks paint a slightly different picture than a separate set of tests published Monday. In those benchmarks, the new 13-inch MacBook Air was found to be slightly slower than the 13-inch MacBook Pro. The new 11-inch MacBook Air was also portrayed as a "smaller but slower MacBook Pro, or a much faster but larger iPad."[ View this article at AppleInsider.com ]

I have a 15-inch MacBook Pro, the new unibody ones, and I installed Windows XP, using BootCamp.
I made it a 29 or so GB partition, so it used the FAT32 formatting.
The program I tried to install is the eyeQ speed reading program, and the laptop exceeds every single one of the recommended requirements.
The problem comes when I am attempting to install the program, I keep getting an error message in which it says "This program cannot run on a computer with less than 64 megabytes of ram."
Last time I checked my laptop has 4 GB of ram, and it says the same thing when I checked it while running Windows XP.
My only guess, which I made while typing this, was that I should have formatted the Windows partition using NTSF.

I want to capture selections on my screen and add comments. Is there a program out there that will allow me to do that? I don't like the "grab it" program because it saves the captured file in a Tiff format instead of a Jpeg format.

I'm looking for an app that will allow me to specify which folders I want to copy to my external drive, updating existing files within it and copying new ones.
I don't want to backup settings, my whole harddrive nor make a bootable backup. Just something to backup what I want to backup and where.
Not sure if Time Machine can do that, but it wants me to reformat my external before I can even find out..and considering how much is on there, I really don't want to have to remove that all elsewhere while doing so. [Don't think I could anyway, none of my internal drives have that much space.]
So, does anyone know of a relatively painless backup app that could do simply what I want? Doesn't sound all that complicated in comparison to some of the more convoluted backup apps I keep finding.

The problem is as follows, I updated some mac's in a company. When I looked into the history of safari I saw a lot of game sites and socialnetworking sites as "most visited sites". They are aloud to play games etc in their pauses. But not in work time ofcourse. So I wondered is there a program or function built into mac os x so I can see what they are doing on their mac/so I can see the desktop. I know there's the option to control the screen from a distance, but I just want to watch.

After 20+ years of Windows, I finally got my 1st Mac Pro 2 days back. Everything went smoothly including installing 4x750 Samsung Spinpoint drives from newegg, 4 GB of extra memory from OWC, Raid set up, and so on. For instance, I want to uninstall a program that I installed as I want to reinstall it. In Windows, you've this wonderful control panel that has everything. Mac's Utility folder has some stuff, but not what I am looking for. I love the right-click mouse feature in Windows; can't seem to have that work on my Mac. So, is there any kind of resource available which lists everything that the OS does without any pretty pictures or over-simplifications? The 81-page manual on Apple site didn't do much good to me. And, how do you uninstall a program? Throwing the .app file in the trash didn't help.

I have a clone of a former G5 startup drive on a WD MyBook external HD that has never really been able to boot for the past few months, especially on an Intel MacBook. I've been able to recover some of the info manually using an old G4 Powerbook, but never completely recovered all of the info. I tried doing all that DD Rescue stuff, but it became a little too involved and over my head. There are still a few documents I'd like to try and salvage from the drive. Although the drive does get recognized on my MB, I can't access the info. The drive is actually in three partitions and I can only access one of them for some reason. I'm thinking about purchasing something like Disk Warrior to see if this would work. Is Disk Warrior or a similar program worth a shot?
