Is it possible to store the user home directory on a Mac OSX Server? Such as how windows user can have roaming profiles stored on a Windows Server. I am planning to setup about 3 Macs and each user can use any machines and have there profile / home directory roam with him/her.
View 1 RepliesOn my Mac Mini, I have set up a new user because of problems with the OS. So far, it is working fine. I also have a G5 running OS 10.4.11. There is an account on both machines with the same name. However, the new account on the Mini is a different name. The G5 does not offer the "login as" (at least that I can see, so my access to the new account on the Mini is limited to a dropbox. To simplify: A is the account on both the Mini and the G5, B is the account only on the Mini. I tried extending the permissions on B's home directory, but that did not work. Using get info, I unlocked the file then tried to add A to the list of users. For some reason, nothing happened.
How can I give user A permission to access user B's home directory on the Mini?

Sometime in the past couple of days I lost write permission to my own home directory (/Users/yalla) - The attributes for my homedirectory are correct, but there are extended attributes as well, and I believe this is where the problem lies.
For Documents, Downloads etc, I am allowed to create/modify/delete files and directories, but under my pure homedirectory ~yalla I am all of a sudden unable to write, meaning I cannot create for instance a new .bashrc (not that I need to since I already have one), or create new catalogues.
I have tried both from Terminal and from Finder, and I am not allowed to create new directories under ny homedir. By going to Finder and going under "Get Info" for my homedir, I have gone to Sharing & Permissions and changed from Read Only to Read & Write which seems to fix it. I have however not been there before and made any changes, and I am therefore worried that by changing this to R&W I am fixing a symptom and not the core problem.
I've a user who has been given a company shared MacBook Air. The account name was previously our company name, but I've sucessfully followed the guide [URL] to change this. Thus, the username is now now his firstname & lastname. The home folder is firstnamelastname. However, the old username (our company name) is still showing up as the username for some email recipients and airdrop.I'm guessing the email name might be saved localy on a few of the users contacts since he's been sending a few emails before the user name was updated. Can this be confirmed in any way?

I have renamed my home directory using the root then I restarted the computer. Then, I logged on with the same account that I have and I found that all the old folders have been moved to a new folder in the new directory under the old directory name.How to get back!I tried to rename it again by replacing the new name with the old name but it didn't work.. is there anyway to undo the change!!

Click OK when "A folder in the Users folder already has the name 'account name'. Would you like to use that folder as the Home folder for this user account?" appears. Note: This will correct the ownership of all files in the Home folder, and avoid permissions issues with the contents. A red flag appears in the field that conflicts (either the short name or the full name). The name(s) cannot be changed! must cancel out.

I've got a new Mac Mini Server that I'm using to set up file sharing for the first time. I've enabled OpenDirectory and verified that the users I'm creating are being created in (they show up in the Server app and Workgroup Manager app, but not in System Preferences | Users).
File sharing seems to be working fine, but I don't like the fact that each user has access to their home folder share when they connect to the server using a mac elsewhere on the network. I prefer only the shares I explicitly set up to be available.
Thus, a couple questionsWhy is there a home folder created on the server at all? Do I really need a /users/johndoe folder for each and every account in OD?How can I configure sharing such that I won't see the home folder when I connect from another mac on the network? I don't want to leave little "cubby holes" for my users to stuff files into

After install 4 GB RAM (work only 3 GB) i install MAC OS X 10.7.3
Now i joined Macmini to Domain Active Directory 2008 R2. Joined via standard tools.
Macmini have a local user.
How i can migrate all settings, all data local user to Domain user?
When i used MAC OS X 10.6.8 i can joined to Domain via Likewise Open, and after i can use Likewise tools for migrate.
But now, in MAC OS X 10.7.3 i can't joined to domain via Likewise... and use migrate tools.
So this is my first time really implementing Macs in an Active Directory environment and everything is going fairly well, except when it comes to the Home directory. All of my users are running 10.7, and with the latest patch, they can all log into the Domain without any issue. The problem is that their Home directory in the dock is displayed as a question mark. I'm guessing I'm missing something in the configuration, but everything looks right. Anyone have the 411 about how to set up a Mac user to map a Home directory to a network share on a Wiindows 2008 AD network?

We use on our Server the OD. About 25 User can ue with their Account every Computer in the Office. Now wo saw the size of the harddrive has very less free space. When we click Apple-I on the users we see it is very low space uses, but this is because all the private folders are blocked. Is their a way to calculate the Open Directory size of every User Account?

We are using Mac OS X 10.6.8 in a classroom. Hard drive has two partitions, one for OS and apps, the other for student's files. Computers are bind to the Active Directory. Unfortunately, local home folders are on the boot parition. Over a time when apps FCP and Avid are frequently used, the boot partition gets filled with files and finally it's full. With zero kb available, users cannot even login anymore. Manually deleting files by admin is cumbersome and time-consuming task.
I'm looking for a way to keep /Users folder clean. Putting user's home folders to server is not an option, because of latency issues etc. Unfortunately the local home folder is the default saving place when user issues the Save As command. I've tried to tinker with the User Template to lock the Documents folder but apps like Microsoft Word and Final Cut Pro go crazy when they cannot save there. Forwarding /Users to other partition does not solve the problem, it just moves the problem to another place. Logout Hook to automatically purging the files could be an solution, but there's always one hapless soul who saves his or hers files to wrong place and loses them. Or maybe a script which looks at the modfication date and deletes old files.

Time machine has suddenly started popping up an error message saying that it cannot connect to server while off-network on my MBP. I use a timecapsule to wirelessly backup when I am home. At home, it connects fine, no messages, no errors.It just started doing this when I am away - previously it either silently ignored not being able to connect or made a local snapshot. Either would be fine over popping up the message (multiple times).I've tried the following so far:1. Re-install Lion, restore user, applications, settings from backup - did after an erase of MBP lcoal harddrive to get a full install.
2. sudo tmutil disablelocal; sudo tmutil enablelocal; sudo tmutil snapshot - all worked fine
3.repaired permissions on local hard drive.
4.verified time capsule.
5.Added timecapsule disk to privacy settings on spotlight
6.I do use dropbox - tried quiting out of it
7.Changed name of time capsule disk

I am running an open directory/active directory network. Authentication is from the Windows server 2003 active directory. It has worked fine until the last month. Now clients stop authenticating & when I check the AD plugin it says network accounts are not available. I can force the server to unbind, then renew the binding & everything works great.Is there any work around or fix for this other than upgrading the windows server to 2008?

I have a few labs that will be running Tiger. I have an XSERVE that is running Tiger Server. All of my users are stored on a Windows 2003 server in AD.
I know how to bind an OSX machine to AD. What is the best way to set up my mac labs/Xserve so that when the users log in they get their home folder on the Windows server but have their preferences managed by Workgroup manager?
I am running a 10.7.3 Lion Server bound to Active Directory. There are only several local admin users on the machine; everyone else authenticates against AD. AFP connections work fine, using both local and AD accounts. SMB connections work fine if you use a local account but any AD account is rejected as having the wrong password when connecting via SMB. I've tried using the adusername trick (our AD server is named "ad") even though you're not supposed to need that with 10.7.2 and above... it doesn't help.
I have tried both a Windows 7 client and a 10.6 client, specifying SMB as the protocol in the Connect To Server dialog. Both fail, and they also take several minutes before reporting the bad password (the slowness in responding is yet another problem I've read as being an issue). Checking the kdc.log file on the server I see:

I am using the full DNS name for the server, and on my test clients there are no firewalls or other network issues that would prevent connection to the server. We're mostly Macs here but the Windows users become a rather vocal group when something doesn't go their way. The confusing part to me is that AFP authenticates just fine and SMB doesn't.

I have tried very hard to find the answer to my transferring question, but nowhere do I find my answer nor does Apple offer free help or even help by email.
So here is my issue. I want to transfer all my personal data from my HOME user account on my MacBook to a NEW user account on the SAME MacBook. The reason is that my Microsoft Office has a certain issue that is only solvable by starting up in a new user. So now I want to transfer all the personality, data, files, and all that from my home user to the new user on the same computer. After that, I want to delete the old Home user and make the new user the default home user account.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy MBPs HDD died, so I bought a new one and partitioned it into two volumes.
One for the OS, the other for my home directory.
It ran fine the last few weeks, only once (or maybe twice) I was unable to login, but entering the password again seemed to help.
I restarted today, and again, I can't login.
I ran Single User Mode and /sbin/fsck -fy , also started up in Verbose Mode and also used Target Disk Mode and repaired both volumes with my iBook's Disk Utility.
I have seen that is rare in the Mac community to define a secondary partition on disk to hold the Home Directory leaving a partition for the operating system only. I would like to know your opinion on the matter of having a partition for the Home Directory as in my case it brought many benefits to me like every time you need to try a new installation of Mac OS from scratch, you must format the partition, which involves obtaining a prior backup of the entire contents of the Home Directory for later recall. This is not necessary if the Home Directory has its own partition. So do the Settings are also conserved. What do you think about it?, Do any of you use a separate partition for your Home Directory?

I want to transfer the OS and applications to an SSD and leave my home directory on Primary. I Googled moving your home directory and understand how this is done. I'd like some comments on the procedure I have thought of which involves Primary, SDD and primary external backup (I have a secondary backup).
1. Install 80 GB Intel X25-M SSD and format as appropriate
2. Clone Primary to on-site external backup drive using superduper & change boot drive to external backup
3. Boot from external backup
4. Delete most of my user content from external backup until external backup only uses about 60 GB
5. Clone contents of external backup to SSD and then change boot drive to SSD
6. Boot from SSD
7. Move home directory from SSD to Primary
8. Boot from SSD to confirm home directory changed
9. Delete home directory from SSD
10. Delete OS and application files from Primary so only user content is left
11. Create new backups for SSD and Primary
i have upgraded my hard disk and restored from time machine back up!! the only issue is when i go to my mac hard disk the user directory cannot be seen??although if i search for it in finder using /User it finds it!!my question is how can i get the user folder to appear when i go to mac hard driver again?

We have approx 20 systems, laptops and desktops - running 10.4.11 and 10.5.8 - that are syncing a local home directory with the user's specified home folder in their AD profile. As a standard, we are syncing their desktop and documents folders. This all seems to be working well, except for the fact that everything in the documents folder syncs, except for their Microsoft User Data info. We have gone so far as to blow out everything in the back up folder and start fresh, but still no Microsoft User Data folder. We have our users on Office 08.

It doesn't seem to matter that I haven't shared that folder. This seems like a HUGE security hole to me. What am I doing wrong?

While trying to create a recent backup of my home directory I ran into an issue with 1 Click Backup crashing while trying to remove an older backup folder from external hard drive. The program crashed on 3 attempts. Once I restarted the program and tried to backup again for the 4th time, I noticed that my desktop icons were missing. Digging a bit deeper I found that all my personal documents, pictures and music were missing. A quick restart and found that when logging into my account it greeted me with the first time use welcome screen. Is there anyway of retaining my Home directory that appears to have been deleted by the 1-Click Backup software while trying to remove an older version of a backup on an external hard drive?

To install this component, just drag the File "XviD_Codec 1.0 alpha.component" into Library/QuickTime. The Library directory can be found either at your home directory (to install just for the actual user) or at the top-level of your startup volume (this needs an administrator account). Do not put in: /System/Library/QuickTime.
It is possible that the QuickTime directory does not yet exists. In that case you can create it yourself. Pay attention to capital letters if you use a case sensitive file system (i.e. UFS). But I haven't got a clue where the Home Directories are.
