OS X :: Black Box Around Active Item?
Sep 19, 2005
My bluetooth mouse ran out of battery and I was trying to do some keyboard only navigation. Somehow I turned on an option that places a totally annoying black box or rectangle around whatever item is active and has focus. This could be an icon in the finder or text in a warning box.
I tried to take a screenshot for clarity, but the act of taking the screenshot seems to move the box before the shot is taken.
Any idea how I can undo this?!? I'm thinking it's a Universal Access item, but I can't find any setting that changes it. I'm running Tiger with latest updates.

I've uninstalled appdelete as I now use cleanapp. Anyway, I have uninstalled it but the contextual menu is still present. I have tried looking at the services and libraries but cannot locate the specific item needed to be deleted to remove the appdelete contextual menu item.

I'm looking for a few good ways to transport and use my UMB. I figure buying a hardshell case & a timbuk2 bag seem like a good combo. Question is - which do you guys think is better, the Speck or Incase cases? Anyone have any experiences? I had the Incase hardshell for my old whitebook.
Seemed to work out alright. The other option I thought of was getting the invisible shield. Anyone have any thoughts?

Do any of you have a sensor-type looking thing on your iMac's? It's on the black strip around the edges just above the black Apple Logo.See my picture for what it looks like (you'll have to look closely to see it):I'm interested to see your responses of what it could be/is. I've only had the machine for going on for 3 days now so I'm new to the whole iMac thing.

I came back from work to wake up my iMac. It made the noise but the screen stayed black. I tried restarting by holding the power button- I can hear it start and the chime but still have a black screen. I tried resetting the pram, and unplugging the cord but I still get a black screen. I can hear the chime though; I'm not sure if that means anything. I just had the hard drive replaced in February so I hope it's not that. just wanted to clarify that when I restart, I get the chime but the screen stays black- I don't get to the grey screen. So I'm assuming right now that my display may be shot?

I was just thinking it would be great to find an application or utility for OS X that could dim the desktop / other running Apps (if any) and just show the active Application in full 'brightness'.
Could help to concentrate on whatever I'm working on rather than letting my eyes wonder which, more often than not - causes me to loose focus what I'm really trying to work on.

I noticed after my initial install yesterday that the firewall does not appear to be on by default. Just throwing it out there so people can take action to activate the firewall.
I haven't checked to see if ipfw is doing anything out of the box, but I imagine not.

I just bought myself a second monitor, and I was wondering if there was a way to, say, keep iTunes visualizer full-screen while browsing the web on the other monitor. Basically, is there a way to keep two windows/programs active at the same time?

Is there a way to keep dashboard active all the time? What i mean is, everytime i click on the dashboard icon it shows-up on the screen and the other programs running on the background just fades. And if i switch to any other programs/applications dashboard does not show-up anymore.
To be more concise, i would like to have it at my screen all the time without having to click it (of course i do have to click for the first time ). Is it possible?

Hey everyone, i'm starting to learn active directory in windows server 2003 but what i want to do with parallels if possible is setup a XP VM so i can see the effect of the changes/rules i setup in active directory.
Is this possible within Parallels or is it a pipe dream as it would be a fantastic learning tool.
The hardware it would be running on is a 24inch 1st gen iMac with 2GB of Ram.
What do you guys think and if it can be done what do i need to make sure of when it comes to setting up parallels?

So I followed the guide here on how to permently get your widgets off your dashboard onto your desktop.
[URL]
Problem is, there widgets are always on top of everything. I included a screen shot. How do I get them behind the active window or how do I put them back onto the dashboard completely?

I work for a college as an IT Support Specialist and currently the only thing I have yet to find that I can use in mac OSX is Microsoft Active Directory. I use this to search for computer names as well as to remove and add computers to our college directory. Do you know of any way to use this in Mac OSX. As of right now I am running parallels on my machine but Active Directory is the ONLY thing that I use in Parallels and would like to find a way to use it in Mac OSX (Leopard). If you need anymore info just let me know.

I am the Mac administrator for my company and I am looking at bringing the Macs into the Active Directory realm. Since we have crept to over 100 Macs (most laptops) it has gotten a little more difficult to manage. I have researched two products, but haven't done any testing yet. The products that I have researched are Centrify Direct Control and Thursby ADmitMac. Direct control seems to be a bit more useful with machine policies. While AdmitMac seems a little light in it's scope.
Has anyone worked with either of these? How did it work out? Is there any other products that I should consider?

Keep a widget active without Dashboard
The Dashboard in OS X is a convenient tool for accessing quick bits of information or using conversion, translation, or reference utilities among many other tools. Depending on the task at hand, sometimes the requirement to activate Dashboard every time you want to access a widget can be cumbersome, especially since the Dashboard prevents access to other applications while it is open. Luckily, however, there is a way around this.
Dashboard supports the use widgets without activating the Dashboard interface, which basically prevents them from being hidden whenever Dashboard is inactivated. This is done by enabling the developer mode for the application, by entering the following command in the Terminal:
defaults write com.apple.dashboard devmode YES; killall Dock
After this command is run, the Dock will relaunch and Dashboard will be in "Developer" mode. From here, all widgets will behave the same as usual, except now you can select a specific widget to keep on the Desktop by the following procedure:
1. Activate Dashboard.
2. Click and drag a widget.
3. Deactivate Dashboard (while still dragging).
4. Release the mouse.
This will keep the individual widget active while the rest close with Dashboard, and the widget will be kept above all other running applications. To reverse this for a widgets, do the same process in reverse order as follows:
1. Click and drag the Desktop widget.
2. Activate Dashboard.
3. Release the widget.
4. Deactivate Dashboard.
While this is a convenient trick, keep in mind it will keep the widget active and alive, which in some cases can use up system resources. You can check this by using Activity Monitor.
To deactivate developer mode, run the command in the terminal and replace "YES" with "NO".

If you have any other Dashboard tips, post'em here.
