View 2 Repliesmy macbook pro has been freezing and crashing lately. the screen ends up looking like this: [URL]
i have checked/repaired disk permissions.
not sure what could be causing this problem.

I've had it sent into Apple once for the horizontal flashing lines, but these are new... it's like a gray vertically striped film covers the whole screen, and unlike the horizontal lines, shaking/hitting the screen does not help.
i have a MacBook Pro..I had my track pad replaced recently..I am not sure if it has anything to do with my screen, however, the screen is randomly turning gray and white with lines and fading out..What does this mean

my MacBook pro display that there are frequently horizontal grey lines going across my screen. I've noticed it mostly when the display color should be grey or white, but that's not always the case. It occurs mostly in my Google search bar using Firefox, and also occurs heavily on Facebook in the comments/reply section of a post. Outside of the browser I've also seen it when looking through some personal photos, especially of the sky, the lines will seem to sort of outline different contrasts in white or light tones, kind of like the Magic Wand tool would do in Photoshop. The lines do flicker and change when scrolling.I attempted to snap a photo with my iPhone the best I could.
My specs:
-13" Macbook Pro (2009)
-Intel Core 2 Duo 2.26 GHz
-NVIDIA GeForce 9400M
-Resolution: 1280x800, 32-bit Color
I have these black boxes around my active pages, I looked online for pointers but they all pointed to me disabling my voice-over in the universal access option on system preferences. My voice-over wasn't enabled and the boxes are still here

My laptop screen randomly going black during the use of computer, but the cursor is active and it moves with the track-pad. I bought this macbook pro 15"Inch laptop just 3 weeks ago. Is there any alternative for this issue?
View 3 Replies View RelatedSo I followed the guide here on how to permently get your widgets off your dashboard onto your desktop.

Problem is, there widgets are always on top of everything. I included a screen shot. How do I get them behind the active window or how do I put them back onto the dashboard completely?
My bluetooth mouse ran out of battery and I was trying to do some keyboard only navigation. Somehow I turned on an option that places a totally annoying black box or rectangle around whatever item is active and has focus. This could be an icon in the finder or text in a warning box.
I tried to take a screenshot for clarity, but the act of taking the screenshot seems to move the box before the shot is taken.
Any idea how I can undo this?!? I'm thinking it's a Universal Access item, but I can't find any setting that changes it. I'm running Tiger with latest updates.
My MacBookPro 15" 5.3 worked fine until today, All the blacks (rgb 0,0,0) on the screen become red stripes.
When I boot into Linux or Windows the same problem appears, so it's probably a hardware problem.
I have no expensive adaptor to connect to an external lcd screen, so I don't know yet if the problem is in the mac screen or in the cabling or somewhere else...
Here are 2 screenshots of black squares a drawed in Illustrator, one taken on the mac (cmd + shift + 3)
one taken with a camera (where you can see the red lines)
I want to avoid the MacStore as I want to avoid missing my laptop for a month...
Could not find such a thread and since this is quite an annoying problem, I decided to register The problem I am encountering since a few days is when I open a finder window, it starts to sort of "flash" from inactive to active window (even when there is no other window/application opened).[Please refer to post below for updated information on the problem]This happens on my MacBook running 10.5.3 (unfortunately I cannot say if the issue only appeared after the update).
View 5 Replies View RelatedOver the last few months I've started to notice my Macbook Pro (13" Mid 2010) developing display issues.. every now and then the screen will freeze and black spots/dashes/lines will appear on the screen.
My mac is fully up to date and I can't seem to work out why this keeps happening?
I've included some screen shots so you can all see what I'm talking about. Thoughts?

View 1 Replies View RelatedAny app for MAC OS that will display my active windows? The app can run in the menubar or dock, or mount next to the doc. Basically, something like the taskbar from Windows XP and Vista. Not Windows 7 as that shows the active programs, but not specific windows. I'm basically looking for an Expose alternative. So if I have 10 different windows running for Firefox, I can quickly look at my menubar or somewhere near the dock, and just click the window I want to see. Yes, I know that is what Expose is for, but I prefer to see me active windows without using a shortcut.
So far here's what I've tried:
-Going to System Preferences, and unchecking "Minimize windows into application icon" in the Dock settings. This offered a partial solution as the icons could not be distinguished for the same program. 10 firefox windows minimized would just show 10 firefox icons.
-Googling the following terms:
app switcher for mac
mac expose apps
show running apps in menubar
show expose items in menubar
pin active applications to menubar in mac
always show expose for mac
application management for mac
I've also tried running these apps:
alunch: [URL]
WindowFinder 1.4: [URL]
Running Applications for Mac: [URL]
XMenu: [URL]
Himmelbar: [URL]
All of these apps more or less place one icon in the menubar, which when clicked on shows your running apps, favorite apps, and system folders. This is fine, and is very similar to the windows start button. However, they all fall short because they only place one icon in the menubar, which must be clicked on to show active apps or active windows. Can someone please point me to an app that will always be on my screen, and will show icons or labels of active windows.
Again, similar to Windows taskbar before Windows 7. I know this is a difference in Mac and Windows, and that I can use the dock to see my active applications, and use the various shortcuts to see my windows, but there's got to be an app that will just always shows my active windows. So if I have Apple Mail Open, and have 3 compose new mail windows going, I would like to see 4 icons or labels somewhere in the menubar or near the dock. I'm on a Macbook Pro - OS 10.6.4
My problem is a screen that is lit but grey, with vertical lines very faint in the background. when connected to a monitor all is well. I have replaced the screen with a second hand one from ebay and it is exactly the same. what is more likely- both screens are duff or is there something obvious i'm missing. i was given the ibook by a friend replaced the harddrive and gave it to my son and it worked for six weeks perfectly until the display suddenly went never to return.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a 2007 MacBookPro. shortly after installing Lion 10.7.3 and VectorWorks 2011 I started getting vertical blue and black lines across my screen on startup. They remain with in the apple while the computer boots and the everything freezes. I tried all of the usual fixes, recovery, safe boot, reset PRAM, battery, etc. When I tried to boot of a system disc I get a message sating that I need to restart my computer. Upon restart same problem occurs. 2 months ago I took the whole thing apart and cleaned out the guts. Reconnecting all cables back together, I came across, what I think is the camera cable. Since my camera has been erratic, i decided to test the problem with it connected and then disconnected. Connected same problem. Once i unplugged the camera everything went back to normal, until now. The same problem returned. I cleaned out the guts again. This time I unplugged the hard drive to try and boot off the C drive, but still get the same problem. This morning It decided to boot up. I was able to copy my essential files onto an external drive.

My Late '11 15inch Macbook Pro went bonanas today. When it starts up there all these black horizontal lines running across the screen jiggering jabbering everywhere and I see three apple logos (due to GPU glitch I am guessing) after loading everything goes white and my laptop heats up and battery dies within like half an hour. I was bummed but then like after restarting a bunch of times and recharging my laptop it starting up normal again! I was super happy, but then it experienced the same crash next time the battery died. So, this has been going on and off;

There's some known documented issues concerning the Nvidia graphics chip in the particular model of macbook pro I have.
Basically when turning on the machine, the screen is filled with black & white horizontal strips like a piano keyboard, but thats it - it doesn't actually boot up fully at all, you cannot hear the hard drive running !
Would the hard drive have anything to do with this ?
I explained this to apple telephone support & they informed of the article
[URL]
[URL]
& stated that the symptoms were linked.
On taking the mac to an apple store they ran a special 'firmware' boot up 'test' using an instore ipod to determine if it was a faulty Nvidia chip, so as to prove to Nvidia, the company funding the repairs whether it is that to blame.
Because the machine didn't even boot up & complete the 'test' they couldn't say whether it was the graphics chip - so 'no free repair' under extended warranty & the final answer was as usual ' buy a new logic board' that will cure it !
This happens every time when I turn on my computer or restart. Otherwise all other computing and display are fine once I get passed the log in screen.

I have had my macbook pro for just over 2 years. About a week ago it started randomly giving me a blue striped, grey, or black screen. The fan pins up and won't stop and either the laptop shuts itself off or I have to force it off. When it restarts it is very slow and sometimes the fan kicks on and won't stop and the screen just stays white after the initial apple and spinning wheel screen, so I have force shut it down and try again. Other times it eventually loads and lets me in but everything responds slowly and takes some time to open.

So I had a recently purchased 17" BTO with the 7200RPM drive that worked great, but with one issue - the display would have horizontal scan lines and black out occasionally. So I called up Apple and eventually managed to get a cross-ship set up(they let me hold on to my current unit, charge my credit card and send me a second brand new 17" unit as a replacement, and then refund me for the second 17" after I send back the defective unit).
Anyway, the replacement unit looks great, but with one issue - there's a very small light dent on the bottom panel(maybe about the size of a dime). I was annoyed but don't think this is worth having to exchange, since I could probably just unscrew the panel and pop it back into place.
However, what really got to me was the fact that my replacement unit was slightly louder than my original - my original is so silent that I can't even tell it's on. However, with my replacement unit, I can hear the hard drive spinning, which is slightly annoying.
Anyway, I proceeded to restore from a time machine backup and test my replacement unit when I noticed that it would occasionally get the hard drive click + beep + freeze issue that many others who have the 7200 RPM drive seem to be facing. It's extremely annoying, and more importantly I miss the complete silence of my older unit.
My question is, while I'm still in possession of both units(which both have the exact same specs, same 7200 RPM drive, etc.), should I simply just open both up and take the silent(good) hard drive from my old unit and put it into my new one?
The click+beep freeze issue is really pissing me off, and my old unit didn't suffer from it - it's just this replacement one(doesn't make any sense).Anyway, would notice if I switched the hard drive? Would I get screwed somehow? Do they keep track of the hard drive serials or something?
I really don't want to go through the pain of sending this back, especially considering that a LOT of people are suffering from this issue, and I don't want to end up with another defective drive. I'm sick and tired of games and just want a computer that WORKS.
Im selling my macbook pro and am trying to restore it to factory settings. I have inserted the "install disc" many times. However, my laptop is never able to start up. It alternates between a black and grey (no apple or wheel) screen. I've tried holding down the "C" key while rebooting..that didnt work. I've tried clicking restart when it instructs me to...that didnt work I've tried going to system preferences --> startup disk --> clicking the install drive and it still didnt work. What can I do? My mac can start up and work perfectly fine without the disk, its just that i need to restore it to factory settings.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was just wondering how many of you would like the Mac OS (the next one, 10.7) to be black? I personally think the grey is starting to become way to dull and boring. I really like it to change to a better looking black or even better, a customizable finder and application themes, such as Windows 7. Tell me your opinion I'm very willing to know what you all think about this. For me, Quicktime X just looks incredibly cool.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've got a friend with a 17" PowerBook G4 that's suddenly started displaying a vertical strip of black lines about 2" wide. Any idea what's causing the problem? I've seen plenty of pictures of PowerBooks with pixel-wide strips of a single color, but none that show black lines. Something else to note is that the problem area is displaying a shadow of the previous window that was there (ghosting).
He's tried all the usual, from rebooting to rubbing the problem area to pressing the metal strip above the keyboard to try and reseat the ribbon cable.
As you can see from the video there is a strange black area surrounding my windows, but only when there are "active," not when I click on the desktop. The iTunes window is unaffected. Additionally the Quicksilver command interface and the Dashboard have a discoloration which is very annoying. Do you know what could be causing this? This behavior goes away when I restart my computer but eventually comes back. I have not been able to tie it to a specific app yet.
This is on a white macbook that I've had for almost two years, but this only about one month old. It didn't use to happen very often but nowadays it happens almost every day.

See the pictures. They look almost like ink but no ink has been near the screen.Tried cleaning the screen but with no luck. It lies on top of any open window.
