OS X :: Keeping Dashboard Active?
Jul 12, 2009
Is there a way to keep dashboard active all the time? What i mean is, everytime i click on the dashboard icon it shows-up on the screen and the other programs running on the background just fades. And if i switch to any other programs/applications dashboard does not show-up anymore.
To be more concise, i would like to have it at my screen all the time without having to click it (of course i do have to click for the first time ). Is it possible?

Keep a widget active without Dashboard
The Dashboard in OS X is a convenient tool for accessing quick bits of information or using conversion, translation, or reference utilities among many other tools. Depending on the task at hand, sometimes the requirement to activate Dashboard every time you want to access a widget can be cumbersome, especially since the Dashboard prevents access to other applications while it is open. Luckily, however, there is a way around this.
Dashboard supports the use widgets without activating the Dashboard interface, which basically prevents them from being hidden whenever Dashboard is inactivated. This is done by enabling the developer mode for the application, by entering the following command in the Terminal:
defaults write com.apple.dashboard devmode YES; killall Dock
After this command is run, the Dock will relaunch and Dashboard will be in "Developer" mode. From here, all widgets will behave the same as usual, except now you can select a specific widget to keep on the Desktop by the following procedure:
1. Activate Dashboard.
2. Click and drag a widget.
3. Deactivate Dashboard (while still dragging).
4. Release the mouse.
This will keep the individual widget active while the rest close with Dashboard, and the widget will be kept above all other running applications. To reverse this for a widgets, do the same process in reverse order as follows:
1. Click and drag the Desktop widget.
2. Activate Dashboard.
3. Release the widget.
4. Deactivate Dashboard.
While this is a convenient trick, keep in mind it will keep the widget active and alive, which in some cases can use up system resources. You can check this by using Activity Monitor.
To deactivate developer mode, run the command in the terminal and replace "YES" with "NO".

If you have any other Dashboard tips, post'em here.

Just wondering if anyone could help me figure this out.
I have my 40" flat screen plugged into my imac via VGA cable to mirror the image.
I'm just trying to have the imac display sleep while I play a movie full screen through the external TV.
I've tried two different ways but both have failed.
1-I set up a hot corner in the imac to sleep display but this results in both the display and the TV sleeping.
2-I just set the power settings to sleep after 1 minute. This works but then If a movie is playing the computer won't go to sleep.

I put "levelwidget" on the dashboard - it is supposed to make a macbook into a Level. Sounded interesting...now I regret! The widget is corrupted and now when I try to open the dashboard it immediately closes and gives me an error message "you can't open the application motion because power pc applications are no longer supported" How do I delete this widget so I can open the dashboard. I've tried to look up the file, but can't seem to find dashboard widget files.

Only thing I wished was for a 8GB RAM BTO option. Maybe next spec bump
Been waiting since MBA V1.0, and believe its the first time that have got all the stars in alignment. Well worth the wait, will get a maxed out 13", tempted to get the 11" as well.
Just a beautiful piece of design & engineering.

I've just created another user account on my mbp, and the problem I'm having is that there are certain applications of mine that the 2nd user doesn't want or need, however when I go onto that account and remove the application it also deletes it from my account?
Is this normal, and is there any way around this? So that I can pick and choose which applications exist on the 2nd account?

My purpose is to summarize what I can collect as information on the best way to keep macs and devices in sync.
First, I will focus on the main goal I want to achieve: keep iCal and Address Book in sync for a macbook and a mac mini. The sync can occur via internet (nice-to-have) or simply when they are on the same network (minimum requirement).
Later below are also separately listed info on files/folder sync.
The option I have found so far:
For Address Book and iCal:
1) Mac OS X native option
Mac OS X Snow Leopard offers the possibility to keep iCal and Address Book in sync, via a Google Account or a Yahoo Account.
FREE requires Google account also keep Google Contacts and Calendar in sync But no contacts picture sync, limited phone number (3 or 4 per contact)
2) Mobile Me
iCal, Address Book, ...
+ storage, web hosting, complete integration with Mac OS X...
79$ / year
3) Others...
Spanning Sync 3
http://spanningsync.com/
Almost as option 1) as it requires a Google Account.
BusySync
Fruux
[url]
Only between computers. But they don't need to be ON at the same time (using fruux cloud).
FREE
BETA
also sync bookmarks and notes.
10.5 and upper.
For files/folder sync:
1) Mobile Me iDisk
2) Dropbox and analog, whether they are webbased on full applications
Dropbox

Chronosync
Amazon S3
Microsoft Live Mesh

3) Other solutions, more manual...

rSync
Part of OS X already. You may need to update it depending on the task, but if you can figure it out, here it is:
rSync
What am I using? I am now trying Fruux. Free and doing exactly what I needed: sync 2 macs for address book and calendar. Not less, and a little more. More after a few days of use!

I was just thinking it would be great to find an application or utility for OS X that could dim the desktop / other running Apps (if any) and just show the active Application in full 'brightness'.
Could help to concentrate on whatever I'm working on rather than letting my eyes wonder which, more often than not - causes me to loose focus what I'm really trying to work on.

I noticed after my initial install yesterday that the firewall does not appear to be on by default. Just throwing it out there so people can take action to activate the firewall.
I haven't checked to see if ipfw is doing anything out of the box, but I imagine not.

I am having a problem with keeping all of my folders arranged by Kind. I have gone into the tasks toolbar in finder. From there I go to Show View Options, then I click choose Arrange by Kind, and then click use as defaults. This does not work, because when I go into a different folder or if I create a folder inside a different folder (that I made), the folder is not arranged by Kind. I have also tried using alt and going to the task toolbar to Keep Arranged By. However both options are only arranging the folder that I am in. I want every folder to be arranged this way.

Thought I could actually just download the album again on the MBA for free when logged into the same itunes account, but it appears that I can't.

I have been scanning old pictures into iPhoto, adjusting the dates to put them in chronological order, and merging into events by years. In iPhoto, the pictures are in the order I want in each Event per year. However, each time I try to export the events to the Burn Folder in prep for burning to dvd, they arrive in Burn Folder all out of order! Instead of 1973 - 1974 - 1975 - 1976, they are all mixed up. I've taken the time to go to Photos and Adjust Dates on all of the hundreds of photos, yet that order does not transfer to a folder. WHAT do I need to do?

Do you ever turn off your external hard drive? I got mine (LaCie 1 TB, USB) always connected when I'm at my desk and the HDD is always powered, meaning I don't turn it off at the back (there is the power switch). The HDD goes into sleep mode whenever it's not doing anything, but still, is this bad for my ext. HDD to keep it always powered? Or should I turn it off when not using it?

At this moment, I have my Mac mini encoding video with HandBrake for iTunes. In iStat Pro in Dashboard, it says that my CPU is 204 degrees Fahrenheit! Is this normal? I get that video encoding is CPU intensive. But why would the fan only stay at 1500 RPM and not kick up to keep the processor cool? The area around the fan is scalding hot in the back, also.

I need to delete my admin account (yes I do have password) and create a new admin account. I dont want to lose any applications or software on the comp, such as the iMovie iDVD etc... but I want to get rid of anything I downloaded from the internet as well as my personal files I have saved. It seems like a lot of my stuff is all scattered around. How can I restore it back to original clean install, keep my apps and software, but delete my personal files and downloads?? I am getting a new MBP, however, I have software on my older Mac that I would like on my new MBP. Is there anyway to be able to use/transfer the programs if one has registered them online? Or does a new computer require a new installation disc and serial? Anyway I can install w/o original discs -My installation discs are at my parents home on the east coast, I recently moved to the west coast and don't have them with me. I can have them send them to me, but if my older computer is registered, can I register a new one?
After buying a new MBP, I can not afford to now go out and buy the software again! The software I am most concerned about having for work/school:
Microsoft Word
Final Draft
Final Cut Pro
