Dec 1, 2014I use Preview to resize my photos depending on where I'm posting or sending to. Since I've downloaded Yosemite I will resize photo and it's not working. I have my photos in iCloud drive & am working between an iMac and a iMac Pro. I'm trying to resize to send out to have printed vs. at home printing. This problem has only happened since upgrading to Yosemite.

Applications :: PDF Layers In Apple Preview?
Dec 29, 2009I'm starting to get a lot of PDFs that have multiple layers, that is, different levels of text and pictures which can be turned on and off. The main benefit is that you can turn off, say, the pictures layer to make a document more printer friendly.However, there are a few PDFs I've gotten that just look like a big mess with all the layers turned on. There's a little annotation in the PDFs I've seen like this that say that there are layers in the document, so I know it's not a bad PDF. Adobe Reader can handle these layers, but I can't seem to find a way to get Apple Preview (Leopard version) to acknowledge it or to find a way to turn them on and off. Is there any way to get it to do so? Are there any plans in the future to support it? Or am I stuck using Adobe for those?

May 31, 2010How the hell do I print in landscape in Apple Preview.
I go to layout tab in the print menubox, and it has these 4 fancy diagrams, but none of them seem to mean landscape. Why isn't there a simple "Print landscape"/"Print portrait" button. At times like these I want to stick a rusty pole up Steve Jobs' bottom. Come back Microsoft - all is forgiven.
And also, why, once I click on "preview" (within the print menubox) to see what my settings look like - and I see it hasn't worked - I then have to reinput all of my settings again?

Nov 29, 2004I'm looking for alternative software to Apple's "Preview." Basically, I'd like a program akin to ACDSee on the PC that would allow me to open a picture in a directory and scroll through photos in that directory, as well as have it be compatible with animated GIFs. It's a mystery to me as to why Apple didn't include this feature in Preview. Preferably I'd like to find one that is native to OS X and non-CPU intensive.

OS X Mavericks :: TextEdit / Preview And Other Apple Applications Won't Launch?
Jun 21, 2014For reasons which escape me, since I rebooted yesterday, I have been unable to launch TextEdit, Preview or Pages - they just say not responding when their icon is ctrl-clicked in the Dock. I just checked Numbers and Keynote, which I have never used and after their initial welcome screen, they too became unresponsive. As far as I can tell, GarageBand, iPhoto and probably others in iLife are unaffected, neither are Mail and Safari.Â
I found that a similar problem was being experienced a few years ago by some people using TextEdit and Preview and it was solved by re-signing the application in Terminal. I have tried that but it hasn't worked. I have repaired permissions and I'm just downloading the Mavericks installer so that I can make a USB installer and re-install OS X 10.9.3.Â
I am downloading which may save me the trouble of re-installing OS X 10.9.3, I'd be very grateful.

Sep 5, 2014My new macbook pro retina doesn't let me preview the sound for .caf files. I open up the loops folder, get the list, and they play when I select them and hit space bar but there is no sound for most of them. There is very few of them that do play sound when I hit play.Â
the files play, and the little arrow starts scrolling right. Its just there is no sound for about 80% of them.

OS X :: Put Back Option Not Available / Only Works On Certain Files Or Locations
Sep 1, 2009I've noticed that when I delete a file from my Downloads Stack there isn't a "Put back" option when I go to the trash. If I delete that same file from the Downloads Folder in the Finder...the "Put back" option is there. Is this a known bug? Same goes for my podcasts I delete from iTunes, no "Put back" option is listed.

Sep 22, 2010Recently the preview program has stopped working. I cannot open PDF files or image files, i.e. jpeg. The only thing I can think of that I've done recently is installing a program called "MailRaider." I just uninstalled it using a program called "Appdelete."
I tried this suggestion from the apple discussion forum that did not work:
Go to the finder, find one of the PDFs you can not open. then click on that PDF one time. go to the file menu, chose get info from the file menu. the inspector window that pops up will include a section on open with. expand that section and click on the open with menu and chose preview. then click the "Change All.." button.
all PDF should now open with preview. you can repeat this process with jpegs, gifs, tifs, pngs, extra as needed.
What else can I try? Do I need to reinstall the preview application? If so, how do I do that?
OS X :: Saving Modified Pdf Files Using Preview
Sep 8, 2010I received an email with a pdf file that I had to complete and send back. I opened the document with Preview, made the changes to complete the form, and saved it ("saved as" because the program wouldn't let me just "save" it. A box popped up saying that changes may affect the original format and that I had to "save as" to get a copy of the file). I opened it again just to make sure, and all the changes were there. I sent it via gmail, and a few hours later the original sender tells me that the form was empty. I checked, and it was empty, even though the name of the file was the one I gave it. I tried again with the same result. Using a PC I had no problems, so I am guessing that the issue is with Preview. Does anyone know what I did wrong?

Sep 29, 2009Is there any way we can change the global setting (if there is one, which apparently there is) for the preview icon for .EXE files? I have many .EXE files I have to copy to/from windows PC's, and each one has this ugly corrupted looking snow look in finder. It's not a problem, so much as an annoyance. I can change the icon on a per file basis with a new icon, but not in general for all .EXE files that it finds.

Dec 4, 2014I've noticed this every since I upgraded to Yosemite. Never seemed to be an issue until now. Is it possible I have a plugin or something that's not supported? There really isn't too much out of the ordinary on my Mac.Â
When I press the space bar, the box spins for a second and then only an image appears previewing the video. At the top right all it says is "Open in Quicktime."

Jun 13, 2010I want to add a file to the Desktop, and I want to open it with a specific text editor (emacs) whenever I click on it. So far, I made that file, copied it into the Desktop directory, and I tried to set the application which opens it via a right-click "Open-with" menu item. But when I try to select executable for that file (again, emacs), that application is greyed out and I can't set that application to open it.
So, how can I do it. When I click on the file, I want a window to be opened with emacs running and editing that file.

I'm also using SneekPreview Pro to enhance QL, but the other one, SneakPeekPhoto I had to uninstall, 'cause it was causing my Finder to quit unexpectedly.

OS X :: Image Files Showing Icons In Coverflow Instead Of Preview?
Jul 14, 2009I don't know when this started happening, but all of a sudden in coverflow all the images display as their file type icon, not the preview of the image, which defeats the purpose of coverflow. Anyone know how this happened and how to switch it back?
Incidentally, all the icons show for Xee, the image browsing app, which I'm using only because Preview is being a jerk and constantly displaying itself in my secondary monitor, which I keep off most of the time (it's a wacom cintiq, and it's distracting to have turned on when not in use). If I can somehow fix this all by fixing preview and getting rid of Xee, I certainly would.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Preview Locks Files Not Only When Open But Also After Being Closed
May 27, 2012I hand-create PostScript files, which are tested by being dragged to Adobe Distiller. This application is unhappy if the same-name PDF is busy. And if not busy, the same-name PDF is happily over-written. So far, so good. Until recently, whilst Preview had a PDF open, it could not be overwritten - somehow marked as busy, I guess. If closed, if could. But within the last two weeks this behaviour has changed. Preview 5.5.2 (719.25), under Lion, keeps them 'busy' even after the file is closed or Preview is quit. It fails to unmark as 'busy'. So I have to drag the PDF to the trash before Adobe Distiller will 'overwrite'.
