Applications :: Alternative Software To Apple Preview?
Nov 29, 2004
I'm looking for alternative software to Apple's "Preview." Basically, I'd like a program akin to ACDSee on the PC that would allow me to open a picture in a directory and scroll through photos in that directory, as well as have it be compatible with animated GIFs. It's a mystery to me as to why Apple didn't include this feature in Preview. Preferably I'd like to find one that is native to OS X and non-CPU intensive.
As much as I love the tight integration of Spotlight, I miss one feature: I want to immediately have a look at the document that is found and be able to locate the search terms within (going from one place to the next). I am using Copernic Desktop Search on my PC and it immediately provides a preview of the search term in the document. Is there a similar free program for the Mac? I found Foxtrot, but it is 29$ just for the Personal Edition [URL:..]
is there a alternative app for viewing pictures besides preview? am i missing something? im new to osx and cant figure out why i cant cycle through pictures. instead having to open each one independently. the same sort of situation when navigating through finder windows. any advice? is this just the way it is?
I'm starting to get a lot of PDFs that have multiple layers, that is, different levels of text and pictures which can be turned on and off. The main benefit is that you can turn off, say, the pictures layer to make a document more printer friendly. However, there are a few PDFs I've gotten that just look like a big mess with all the layers turned on. There's a little annotation in the PDFs I've seen like this that say that there are layers in the document, so I know it's not a bad PDF. Adobe Reader can handle these layers, but I can't seem to find a way to get Apple Preview (Leopard version) to acknowledge it or to find a way to turn them on and off. Is there any way to get it to do so? Are there any plans in the future to support it? Or am I stuck using Adobe for those?
For reasons which escape me, since I rebooted yesterday, I have been unable to launch TextEdit, Preview or Pages - they just say not responding when their icon is ctrl-clicked in the Dock. I just checked Numbers and Keynote, which I have never used and after their initial welcome screen, they too became unresponsive. As far as I can tell, GarageBand, iPhoto and probably others in iLife are unaffected, neither are Mail and Safari.
I found that a similar problem was being experienced a few years ago by some people using TextEdit and Preview and it was solved by re-signing the application in Terminal. I have tried that but it hasn't worked. I have repaired permissions and I'm just downloading the Mavericks installer so that I can make a USB installer and re-install OS X 10.9.3.
I am downloading which may save me the trouble of re-installing OS X 10.9.3, I'd be very grateful.
I came from the MS Windows PC. I love everything about the Macbook Air and the Apple OS; however, I get used to the Delete, End, and Home buttons. Is there a way on the Apple keyboard that I can simulate these functions? With these buttons, I can easily move to the end or start of a sentence for word process editing. I can delete from the right side of the sentence instead of using the arrow on the Apple keyboard to move it to the right and then use the Delete (which is really a Backspace key) to delete the word.
In Windows XP/Vista, if you are navigating in a folder containing pictures, and you click any picture, it opens up Windows built in preview program. Much like OSX. However, in Windows, you can click "Next/Previous" within that program to quickly flip through those photos. Why do the up & down arrows in OSX not work? I still prefer my iMac to any PC I have owned, but this one little thing bugs me to no end. Is there a setting I can change somewhere to make that work like in Windows?
Whats up. I have a picture which someone has edited to make funny. The edited picture shows up in Preview the application with a text box saying something. But in Finder's preview I see the raw picture. Whats going on there and how do i see the full picture the way Finder's Preview sees it.
Long time ago before torrent I used to use DC ++ (Direct Connect) program on windows. Unfortunately I need to find really old files that nobody seeds in torrents now, so I'm looking for something like DC++ but on a mac?
How the hell do I print in landscape in Apple Preview.
I go to layout tab in the print menubox, and it has these 4 fancy diagrams, but none of them seem to mean landscape. Why isn't there a simple "Print landscape"/"Print portrait" button. At times like these I want to stick a rusty pole up Steve Jobs' bottom. Come back Microsoft - all is forgiven.
And also, why, once I click on "preview" (within the print menubox) to see what my settings look like - and I see it hasn't worked - I then have to reinput all of my settings again?
Is there a program like Shazam that I can use on OS X? I really don't want to go through parts of my library using Shazam on my iPhone if there is something I can run natively right from my Mac itself.
ways to use osx and its applications, besides keyboard and mouse.
I know about speech recognition. Recently I found about opera browser gesture-based internet surfing.
Maybe there are other programs that use isight in order to take commands from our face expressions. Of course, from hardware side, there is also trackball, tablet surfaces etc
Is there any alternative to the dock? On Windows, I love Objectdock Plus. It's more flexible than the actual Mac dock. Is there anything like this for Mac?
Is there any way to not have apple mail display the message content in the preview pane when I right-click on the image in the list? I want to mark certain messages as Junk Mail manually, but cannot do so without the message being loaded into the preview pane.
I've done a few (well a lot) of DVDs now with iDVD using avi files on my hard disk with a view to either giving as presents or watching with the family on TV.
We do not want to hover around my laptop to watch a movie In about 90% of these iDVD created DVDs I get an error message from iDVD that there was a problem during encoding and if we try to watch them throgh the TV/DVD player then the film just stops about 75% of the way through.
Does anyone know of a reasonable alternative to AdBlock for Safari? I would like an unobtrusive ad-blocking extension that is equally effective. I understand that it will not be officially supported, but that's fine so long as it doesn't compromise performance/security. AdBlock uses way too much memory and it cripples Safari, causing it to hang/crash repeatedly. You can find the bug report here: [URL]
I am looking for an alternative to iPhoto for viewing and organizing photos. I need something that allows for tags like iPhoto does and preferably something with a full-screen mode for editing.
My main problem with iPhoto is that it gets bogged down when you have imported thousands of photos. And I hate having to import photos on external drives before I can view them.
I've seen a lot of recommendations for Picasa, but I can't use that 'cause I'm on a PPC.
I'm looking to change my icons systemwide, but I can't afford Candybar. Is there any free alternative that I can use icontainer files with? Not LiteIcon, because I can't get the icontainer I want to use (Kobhens) to work with it.
I'm a freelance journalist and want to start using software that will help me keep track of contacts, projects, outlying opportunities, etc. Daylite gives me damn near everything I want, but I cringe at the $189 price tag. Are there any alternative programs out there that provide the same sort of functionality for less cash? I've played around with the trial version of OmniFocus as well, but I can't figure out any way to have it store contact/client information and link clients to projects...and I really need to be able to do that.
I want to integrate my ical calenders into google calenders. Spanning sync does a great job. however it is quite pricy. This is why I need an alternative to Spanning Sync.
I have been searching and searching for this and i give up. Can you give me a free alternative to flash CS4? I want tweening.I will try to figure out how to use it. Just want something like CS4 that is freeware.
I need a free photo shop alternative. I tried gimp, Choco shop, and live quartz. I disliked all of them. CAn you give me a free alternative that is a download (not a big fan of online stuff).
What kind of software is available for the mac that would let me remote desktop to a mac from a PC? I currently use VNC to connect to a Linux box from windows but I'm not a big fan and was hoping for a better alternative on the mac.
i was wondering if anyone here knows any mac alternatives for softwares like copyhandler or fastcopy or teracopy or richcopy or supercopier. they were like gems inside the windows OS and now since i have moved to mac i miss their functionality and ease of use. i even cannot seem to make OSX to cut the files and paste them in another partition.
Do any of you know of a good photoshop alternative for Mac? I use GIMP on Windows, but on Mac it still uses the Windows shortcut keys, so it's confusing.
