OS X :: Airport - Dozen Of Access Points With Same SSID

Sep 8, 2009

At my university, there are multiple access points, all broadcasting on the same SSID with both 2.4Ghz (802.11b/g/n) and 5Ghz (802.11a/n) radios. In the spot where I'm having this problem, my Mac can see about a dozen of these access points with the same SSID. However, the problem is that I can't specify which one it will connect to. Here, there is substantial interference on the 2.4Ghz band, so it is unusable. My MacBook Air will usually connect on the 5GHz band, but it occasionally tries to switch to the 2.4GHz frequency on the AP, causing my connection to cut out.

Is there any way I can force my Airport to connect to a particular channel or access point? On my Windows machine I solved this problem by disabling the 2.4Ghz radio so that Windows would be unable to see those APs, but this doesn't appear to be possible on the Mac. I've tried searching for a solution without success.

OS X :: Connecting To Base Station Not By SSID?

Mar 3, 2009

Anyway, at my school, I tend to not have any problems getting on the wireless, except there is one place where I can get a connection to the wireless access point, but it will not give me an IP address. I tried release and renew on many occasions. I also tried restarting and all the regular stuff. My school's tech support was not too helpful.

I spoke to some people who have had similar issues and they said, that they have had it with some routers and not other. Because of the nature of the network, there are a lot of base stations all broadcasting with the same SSID. They suggested I try to connect to one of them.

The problem is, by default, OS X connects the station with a given SSID that has the strongest signal. Is there a way to connect to the other ones. Using a widget, I see the other base stations with the same SSID. How do I tell my computer to connect to those?

For what it is worth, I have a 2.2ghz Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook with 2 gigs of Ram and all the latest versions of everything.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Wireless On Imac Won't Display Any Network SSID's

Jun 29, 2012

I have an older imac running Lion 10.7.4.My router is a Time Capsule running 7.6.1. Yesterday my imac randomly disconnected from wifi and hasn't been able to reconnect since. When I click the wifi icon no networks show up in the list; it simply shows a greyed out "No Network My iphone and laptop each show 5 networks in the area including my own, the imac shows none.I even set my iphone up as a pesonal hotspot to see if the SSID would show up - it I tried putting my network name in manually through "join other network"- nothing. I have reset the computer and router several times each As far as my imac is concerned there are no wireless signals available.

So here's the odd part, I assume the wifi card has just died and haul my imac into the nearby apple authorized repair center. The guy plugs it in and it works no problem - shows the store's network and another one nearby and connects right away. The guy ran one or two quick tests but everything's working fine. I bring it home, the problem comes right back - can't see any of the wireless networks.Works fine through ethernet.

MacBook Pro :: Unable To Recognize A WiFi SSID On Computer

Aug 31, 2014

The menu that lists the choices for my wifi internet connection includes the internet connection I set up with the SSID that I recognize (call it A) - but it also contains another SSID that I may have set up a long time ago and forgot about (call it B). B's  SSID is the same name as the brand of my router; it has no protection listed. It also gets better connectivity than SSID A. How can I find out if B is actually my own connection? How can I add a security password?

OS X :: Saying Airport Connected / But No Internet Access

Mar 3, 2010

I'm having problems with my connection to the internet. Either in Snow Leopard or in Windows (Bootcamp), sometimes it says that I'm connected, but I have no internet access.

Most of the time everything works as normal, but at least 4-5 times a day the problem presents and I can't access any webpage, tho it do says I'm connected to my Airport Extreme.

Same thing happens with my iPod, at the same moment. So it must be something with the AE, but I'm completely lost as to what it is.

Hardware :: Airport Extreme Access Over Internet

Jul 13, 2007

I hope the mac folks can lend a guy a hand. I have the latest AE and it runs great with a shared HD between Vista PC and my Macs. My ISP is dynamic so I'm using dyndns.org. Since I don't really want to leave a computer on 24-7 (for the dyndns updates) I have a linksys router take the feed from the cable modem. AE is in bridged mode. All disks and wireless is flawless. I can access my webcams via the static ip from dyndns, route it to linksys then to camera. But I can't figure out how or what to do to get access to my shared drivers over the net. I researched for a couple hours today and came up with a few people who did it (maybe they didn't have a leading router like me) but they didn't leave enough clues, details or links to research it some more. Apple online support is slim and I'm clueless on Bonjour configs.

Hardware :: Access Airport Extreme Linked HDD From PC?

I'm not sure what to enter the Workgroup and WINS Server fields on Airport Utility so perhaps this is part of the problem? I've never set up a workgroup because i've only got the one PC here so far. Otherwise i'm at a loss as to what to do. If I can't use the external HDD then the airport extreme is useless to me. I'm running XP on an HP laptop

OS X :: Unable To Access Networking / AirPort Express

Jan 10, 2010

I'm in Afghanistan and our internet service consists of a large dish, connected to a series of switches, with lan cables that terminate in individual rooms. Normal service includes plugging in the cable to your machine, where you get a login screen, allowing you to purchase internet / log in.

When I try to plug instead into my AirPort Express, I can only get the internet to work when I place it in bridge mode. I'd like to get it to assign IP addresses to whatever I add to my network so that I can use both my MBP and my iPhone wirelessly. However, when I try to use it as a DHCP device, I can never get any device to find a web page, etc.

Hardware :: Remote Access To Airport Extreme

May 20, 2010

I am a new Mac user this year ( I bought a 27" C2D iMac) and finally converted from a Linksys wireless G router to an Airport Extreme. Everything was simple to set up on the Airport. One question I have is how to remote administer the Extreme. On the Linksys I would enable remote administration by opening port 8080. Then from an off site location, I would type my IP Address ( I have a static IP) as follows - IP_Address:8080 in a web browser like Firefox. This would bring up a login screen for me to log into my router. The reason I would like to remote administer my router is that I have several Linux servers on my network that I use VNC to administer. I do not like logging into one server and then from that server logging into another server on the network. Rather I would just change the VNC port forwarding to the IP address of the server I wanted to reach via the Linksys admin. Is there a way to get to my Airport Extreme without going through my iMac?

Hardware :: Unreliable Internet Access With AirPort Extreme

Dec 10, 2010

I have an older cable modem running Comcast's service connected to the newest AirPort Extreme in my current setup. My computer is a 13.3" MacBook Pro with all of the latest software updates. With all of that said, I'm having problems with having webpages hang, dropped audio on streams and constant re-buffering of video. Strangely enough, my signal is always at full strength no matter how far away I am from the AirPort. Until a few days ago I was using a Linksys WRT54GL with DD-WRT firmware with absolutely no troubles at all, but things have gone to hell with this new router. I've rebooted my modem and AirPort and I've browsed through the settings without finding any solutions yet. I've tried 5Ghz mode, I've tried being inches away from the AirPort and I've tried going to 802.11g with no improvements. Does anyone have an idea about what is going on?

I have a 24" iMac that has completely all of a sudden stopped wanting to connect to the internet. The iMac will find the wireless network...show full bars...then drop a bar....then another bar, then another, until only the smallest bar is available. It will transfer data but only for a few seconds until it wont work at all. Now the macbook, sitting right next to the imac will show full bars and stay that way. So i tried a ethernet cable to the iMac and it will not even pull up 1 single page, but the same cable connected to my Macbook will work flawlessly.

Hardware :: Mac At Home For Remote Disk Access With New Airport?

Mar 7, 2009

I'm getting conflicting info about this. Those who seem knowledgeable say you need a MAC at home to use BTMM with the new Airport but there are reports of people that are connecting to TC or USB disks over the internet without a MAC at home.

And to make matters worse it's confusing to begin with. Also, there doesn't seem to be much interest in this issue.

From the Apple forum:

Re: Accessing time capsule drives on MobileMe
Posted: Mar 6, 2009 2:51 PM

"I have been reading online and it appears that you must actually have a Mac connected to the TC to enable the drive sharing. This apparently still requires a Mac at home. The new thing is only that drives connected via USB to a TC or AEBS are visible when connecting to your Mac at home via Back-to-my-Mac. I was under the impression you could connect directly to the TC less the Mac connection, it appears thats not the case."

Reply

"that completely defeats the whole purpose I hope that is not the case. Is there any other way to access your timecapsule from another internet location? "

Reply

"Nope. I just finally got mine to work without any home computer connected to the shared disks on my AEBS. I didn't change anything from 5 minutes ago when it didn't work, but it does now. "

Here are all the steps I took:
1. Added MobileMe info on the Advanced screen
2. Checked the box to share disks over the Internet
3. Checked the box to share the disks using Bonjour
4. Added a wide-area Bonjour hostname

Hopefully this was just something they turned on rather than a grim promise of spotty service.

Reply

"I did not even have to do (2) (3) and (4).

But I think the service is rather slow right now. So you might not see your AirDisk appearing on the Finder immediately.

Also AirPort Utility will take advantage of wide-area bonjour and MobileMe service as well, by login onto MobileMe, you can remotely configure your TC."

Update: Here's another one (for my own info)

Quote:

" Ididn't even have to do that much. I have one of the original Time Capsules (purchased the first day they were available in the Apple Store). I updated to the latest firmware and the latest Airport Utility. Went into the MobileMe preference on the Time Capsule and entered my user name and password. I went to school, opened Finder, clicked on Time Capsule, it asked for my Time Capsule user name and password, and now could access the Time Capsule drive. I even copied a 24MB file over and it all worked just fine. The only thing I didn't do was try to copy something from my computer to the Time Capsule. I did try to do a backup via Time Machine but that did not work. Even if it had I don't think I would ever do backups remotely.

If it helps - I am a MobleMe subscriber/user, I have Back to my Mac turned on in the MobileMe preferences, I have a unibody MacBook, I'm using Mac OS X 10.5.6, and as I mentioned before - Time Capsule firmware 7.4.1 and Airport Utility 5.4.1. My Time Capsule is not connected to another Mac permanently. It is in my utility room connected only to my Comcast modem. "

end quote.

So it sure looks like you can do this. Not sure though as it's all a bit of a mess i'm not sure I want to step in.......

Hardware :: Allow Others To Access Airport Extreme's Drive Via Internet

BUT I would like to allow others (who are not on my home network) to access this same drive (with some level of security). Is THAT possible and if so, how? I have 2 partitions on this HD, one is a mac-formatted partition and the other is a FAT32 for PC user access. Or course, each partition has a unique name so, depending on the user, they would access either the Mac or PC formatted partition. BTW, I did some thread-checking but all seem to find are one's that show how to I can make a connection to my own drives away from the home, NOT someone who is not associated with my home network to make the same connection to the USB drive on my APE.
