OS X :: Can't Access Network Preferences Or Install Airport Express

Sep 4, 2009

I'm running OX 10.4.11 on a G5. I have airport on my computer and at one point was able to share files from my desktop to a laptop. However at some point something happened and I can no longer do this.

I can't get into my network preferences as the following message comes up - "your network preferences have been changed by another application" and I have to force quite to get out of the window.

I have since purchases airport express and my husband got it to work at home. Now I just tried to install it on my desktop and it won't work. There are probably numerous problems here.

Hardware :: Airport Extreme Not Forwarding Airdisk To Connected Airport Express Network?

Apr 25, 2010

I have an Airport Extreme, with two USB hard drives connected to it. The Airport Extreme shares these disks to my wireless network via Airport Disks.

Upstairs I have an Airport Express, that wirelessly connects to my Airport Extreme downstairs, and extends the wireless network so I get a good wireless reception upstairs.

My problem is, that it does not seem like me Airport Express does a good job of forwarding my 2 USB Airport Disks to the extended wireless network upstairs.

For example, when I use the AirVideo iPhone app to stream video from my USB Airport Disks I get a server connection error when I go upstairs and the iPad/iPhone switches to the Airport Express networks. I cannot reconnect as long as it is on the Airport Express network. If I turn the airport Express off, and thus switch to the poor wireless reception from the Airport Extreme, I can connect to the USB Airport disks again.

The Airport Express is connected to the Airport Extreme in bridged mode.

OS X :: Slow Network - Airport Express To Extend The Network

Apr 21, 2010

I have a slow network issue. I'll try to make it as simple as possible.

1 MacBook Pro
1 Airport Extreme
1 Airport Express to Extend the Network

The network to my living room was slow, so I added the Express to extend the network. When connected through the Express, with a Time Machine backup, I'm getting about 500K/sec transfer speeds. When I move the laptop away from the Express and close to the Extreme, the network works much faster, about 5MB/sec. I don't understand why the network is so much slower when using the Airport Express as a network extender. Is the speed difference normally that much? If it's not supposed to be, is there anything I can do?

OS X :: First No Airport Then No Network Preferences Available

Sep 22, 2009

My problems are getting bigger and bigger:

1. I could not activate my airport card after installing 10.6
2. I erased all data in system configuration as other threads told me

[URL]

3. Then my MB said that there is no airport card installed (but it is)
4. After that I tried to reinstall 10.6 but DVD stopped loading and said it interrupted
5. Now Im even not able to open network preferences! It loads, and loads, and loads...
6. I installed 10.6.1 but nothing happened

I feel like snow leopard (and my attempt to clear the situation) killed network on my MB-Pro.

OS X :: Unable To Access Networking / AirPort Express

Jan 10, 2010

I'm in Afghanistan and our internet service consists of a large dish, connected to a series of switches, with lan cables that terminate in individual rooms. Normal service includes plugging in the cable to your machine, where you get a login screen, allowing you to purchase internet / log in.

When I try to plug instead into my AirPort Express, I can only get the internet to work when I place it in bridge mode. I'd like to get it to assign IP addresses to whatever I add to my network so that I can use both my MBP and my iPhone wirelessly. However, when I try to use it as a DHCP device, I can never get any device to find a web page, etc.

Hardware :: Airport Express Allow Internet Access (Free)

Apr 21, 2009

I will be going on vacation in a couple weeks and would like to take my Macbook Pro with me. The only problem I have is the hotel I am staying at charges for WiFi everyday. I would like access to the internet, but I don't feel like paying the money for their WiFi service. If I purchased Airport Express, would I be able to get internet access without having to pay for their fee? I already own Airport Extreme, so buying Express would be worth it for me anyways, I just would like to know if Express could allow me internet access without paying the hotel's fee.

Hardware :: Extending A Network With Airport Express?

Nov 3, 2010

New here and new mac user all together. I have looked quite a bit for an answer to this question but have not found one that applies directly to my situation.

My dilemma is that my apartment complex has free (unsecured) wireless but currently with my macbook pro, I can not register the signal in my living room. I just got Airport Express with the idea of extending the signal to all areas of my apartment. However when I go to "Join current wireless network", the apartment's signal does not show up (two other networks do show up though they are password protected).

I have read here that certain routers are not compatible with Airport Express (is this true?) and I am wondering if that's a possibility here.

Is there a fix for this? Do I need access to the router?

Hardware :: How To Change Airport Express Network Name

Aug 16, 2008

Just installed my very first wireless network: Airport Extreme. NOT AIRPORT EXPRESS

Stumbled through the installation, and everything works.

However, in the process the software apparently selected a network name for me; and I would very much like to change that network name. I have crawled through the Network Preferences under System Preferences, but I can't find a way to do this.

Hardware :: Airport Express Will Not Join Network?

Jul 20, 2009

I updated 1 of 3 expresses to 7.4.2. Using it to stream music with Airfoil suddenly stopped. Got it put back to 7.4.1 but it will still not join the network other than when it is connected via ethernet cable. Two other expresses work. Been to genius bar. This is doing my head in. Had wonderful full house steaming sound with iTunes or Airfoil. Have tried everything i can think of.

Has anybody else had this problem.

Is there a solution. I have reset it several times both hard and soft resets.

OS X :: AirPort Express Can't Connect To Secured Network

Jul 24, 2009

I just bought a second hand AirPort Express.

After trying again and again and failing to connect to my home wireless network which has a password, I tried again after disabling the password, and it worked fine, I'm playing music via iTunes through it right now.

Problem is, I'd obviously prefer a secured network, why can't I connect to a secured network? I'm using a Linkseys WRT160N Router as a base.

OS X :: AirPort Express And WDS Network Not Boosting Signal?

Dec 24, 2009

I want it to provide a boost to the signal in the basement for my touch. As well as stream music from my laptop. The issue Im having is that the music keeps on cutting out. The newer one this is listed under is working fine, but on the other side of the room, it is setup to Extend the 'n' network (which I assume means allow my laptop better signal in the basement.)

The older one is on a b/g network, which I setup as a WDS network and then setup the express as a WDS relay, which I assumed would provide signal strength for the b/g network in the house (so we are running b/g & n). But setting it up as a relay it still loses connection with the laptop (I am assuming this is with the b/g network itself) and I believe that the touch's WiFi connection also drops with the music, because it is all the b/g network.

The b/g network trickles into the basement, but I assumed with the b/g touch setup as a WDS Relay, that it would strengthen the signal for my touch and ALSO keep the signal strong between the laptop and the express (Im guessing they are talking over b/g). But after being setup as a WDS relay the music is still dropping, and I only assume the touch's wifi signal is dropping as well! I also had to setup the ENTIRE b/g network as WDS because I did not get an 'extend range signal'.

Hardware :: AirPort Express WDS - Setting Up Network?

I've come home from college for the summer and set up my PC and iMac in my bedroom. However, the wireless signal from the router in the basement (a cisco m10 wireless n router) is very weak and cuts out frequently. I have an Airport Express and was hoping to use it as a wireless repeater/range extender, but can't seem to figure it out. I know there is no "official support" for use as a repeater with non-Apple routers, but is there a way around this? If so, how can I set up my network?

Hardware :: AirPort Express + Get NAS (Network Attached Storage)?

Jan 11, 2011

I'm looking for a "media server" of some sort. Buying a second computer to have constantly running to store movies/music is out of the question since I just want to have it for my MBP, 360, and roommates PS3. I want to get a NAS (Network Attached Storage), but the main router is in my roommates room. I don't trust my roommate to keep a $100+ hard drive safely in his room, and he won't want the responsibility of making sure nothing happens to it when people are over and what not. I already have an AirPort Express in my room. I know the AirPort Express can be used as a network extender. Would I be able to connect the NAS to the AirPort Express via Network Cable and have it work?

Hardware :: Adding An Airport Express To My Current Network?

Oct 2, 2008

I am trying to add an Airport Express to my existing wireless network, in order to increase the range of the network.

I've run Airport Utility and gone through the setup wizard - everything seems to have gone of fine, it says "Settings for this Airport Express have been successfully updated" and then it goes into "Waiting for the Airport Express to restart..."

But that restart doesnt happen - or rather, I get the message "Unable to find the Airport Express base station" (words to that effect). And after this, I can no longer find that new Airport Express on the wifi network.

So I reset the base station and tried a manual setup. Same problem - settings updated, Airport Express doesnt restart properly and can no longer be found on the network.

Any ideas what is going on here? I tried it using Mac Mini running 10.5.3 and Airport Utility 5.3.1.

Edit - I just tried this doing this on my Macbook running 10.5.4 and Airport Utility 5.3.2 - same problem.

Hardware :: How To Set Up Airport Express As Linksys Network Extender

The main use is to stream music using couple of Slimdevices Squeezebox units. The signal of the one in my bedroom is in average 68% so I want to extend my nextwork to impreve the signal.

I jut bought an airport express and I would like to use to extend the network. So far I have been able to connect the AE to the existing network but not to extend it. My network is WEP 64 encrypted.

OS X :: Network - Comcast - Ethernet - AirPort Express / Extreme?

Jun 21, 2009

I finally convinced a friend to get a Mac and bragged about how easy everything works. He got a new iMac (loves it!) and signed up for Comcast High Speed Internet. Now there is a new MacBook in the house so I explained that all he would need is the AirPort Express in order to share the internet wirelessly for both Mac's. I went to set it up and I screwed everything up, after hours of work I not only couldn't get the Express working, I had to leave him without even ethernet internet. That's really all the info about his setup I have at the moment. So I came home to examine my own setup which is very similar: we both have the same Comcast modem (Arris TM502G) except I have an AEBS and he has a Express.

So I came home to examine my setup, it has been a while since I set mine up but its been flawless wirelessly (I never used the ethernet before). So, I plugged a ethernet cable in to the AEBS and connected my MBP. Works great. So I want to try to cut out the AEBS and just connect via ethernet from my MBP to the cable modem, that's where I start getting IP address problems. When an ethernet cable is connected to the AEBS my IP address is 10.0.1.12 and works fine. When I cut out the AEBS and try to run ethernet directly from my modem to my computer my IP Address changes to 169.254.181.6 and I get an error message saying that "Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect" and sure enough, I can't. Network Diagnostics tells me to configure via DHCP and restart the modem, still no luck. As I was searching tonight I came upon some discussion about Comcast limiting MAC addresses or something?

Hardware :: Setting Up Network With Airport Express (2009)?

Jul 4, 2009

I just purchased my new Airport Extreme (draft-n) and setup was relatively easy when building a simple network. However, after discovering that the Extreme cannot cover the whole house, I've been wanting to use my old Asus WL-530g router as a base and the Extreme to extend the network, or vice versa.

I've tried using the Extreme as the extender to the Asus's network but it gives me this message: "You cannot extend this network"

What can be the problem?

Are there any alternative ways to extend a network?

Can I use the Asus itself to extend the Airport network?
