i have a hard drive i use mostly in Windows that i lost data and want to recover it. i've played with some of the free utilities on the internet but they either take too long or aren't very good.
since Tiger reads NTFS partitions i was going to try it on my Mac Mini.
i usually use a laptop and don't have time to leave the recover running for 10 hours or more. any good free utilities out there?
Macbook Pro running on OSX Mavericks is having problems.Â
Today I turned my Mac on, and it started up with a loading wheel and a loading bar. When the loading bar finished, the Mac turned itself off. I tried many times, same happened every time. I then went into OSX Recovery, started repairing Macintosh HD, but the error message saying "Disk Utility can't repair Macintosh HD" came up and now I don't now what to do.Â
Is there any way I can back up my files in this situation? Is there any way I can repair the disk without having to erase all data and reinstalling OSX? Or do I really need to bring it to a Apple Store for repair?Â

My original hdd refuses to boot up, and using disk utility via recovery mode to try and fix it just gives me an error "disk utility stopped repairing the drive, salvage data and format etc." giving an error about invalid node structure or something. Tried using target disk mode with a friend's mac when I was at work but the drive didn't even want to mount. Assuming it's about to die, I have just bought a new hdd (XT Hybrid) and since my mac is pre-Lion era (2010 model) I don't have a built in recovery mode, but strangely enough hooking up my old hdd with a dock and option-booting to it I can still access the recovery HD partition on it.Â
So I was thinking if i can essentially "clone" my original hdd to the new one using the restore tab on disk utility, and try using disk repair on it to get it working? or is there another app I can use that will do this (being mindful that I don't have access to another mac or the OS on the HDD to run it, so it'll have to be "live", and preferably free) Or should I just cut my losses and just put a fresh install on it... Yes I do have a time machine backup, but there's two reasons I want to see if this works - one is that although time machine is quite up to date (within a week I'm guessing, can't remember), it's obviously won't have the new content created during the day(s) before I was able to plug in my external hdd, and secondly since I don't have access to another mac to create a lion install usb drive, I'll have to use the internet recovery, and knowing my internet connection, 4gb download would take probably overnight and nearly a whole day to finish (assuming it doesn't drop out).Â

I am trying to make a redundant backup image of my harddrive using something OTHER than Time Machine. I booted to recovery because you image from a disk you are booted from. The restore took 2 hours, and indicated the entire time in disk utility that it was restoring "Mac HD" to a similarly sized partition on my external hard drive. When it was done, the external had a copy of my recovery drive on it. That's crazy talk.

View 3 Replies View Relatedfirst off, long time MacRumors reader, finally joined the forum now in search of some aid.There are some other threads on a similar topic I know, but I was hoping for some So, the Hard drive in question is a Western Digital 5400rpm 320gig purchased from Amazon about 8 months ago, now the Hard drive has decided to die. I saw some early signs, but did not realise that the drive was in that bad of a condition at the time. Now, when attempting to boot into Mac OS X I get stuck at the Apple logo, with the little wheel spinning infinitely. I had a boot camp partition which worked, but could not help me and is no longer an option either. I tried using the Leopard boot disk, but Disk utility didnt do anything for me in terms of recovery or repair, I attempted to use the terminal to make an Image of the drive on an external, but it fails about 10% through, I'm assuming from corrupted data.

The intern disk had to be replaced and they told me that they can't recover the date ( not in theyr shop)
How works the data recovery once the disk is out of the computer ? Is there necessarily a "white room" process wich is very expensive ?

I had downloaded some files to add to an external hard drive, the hard drive was assigned to a pc before adding these files so it wouldn't let me add files from my MacBook..Â
Had a look around online and made some changes (well thats what I thought) and I was able to transfer files form my MacBook onto the external hard drive.Â
What I then figured out was that there was nothing left on the hard drive except for the two file sI just transferred..Â
It turns out I deleted everyting without noticing.
The stpes I followed was to go to disk utility then select the hard drive and click erase (not knowing this would erase evrything).Â
So now I have two files on my hard drive and no idea how to recover the 'delted' files.Â
I tried using Disk Drill, which found the files but then it said I need to buy the full version to recover them.Â
I am wondering if there is any free methods to recover these files at all

My old Mac, G4 tower running 10.4.11 died. I need to recover data from the hard drive. I put the drive in a disk drive enclosure via USB but my new Mac, Mac Pro Intel, 10.4.11 cannot read the drive. I get an error message, "this drive is not readable by this computer, eject, initialize". It sees the USB drive in disk utility but cannot see the data.

That's all I really need, I don't care about all the other junk. I've tried booting from the Disk Warrior cd, which Apple Genuis Bar suggested since they don't do data recovery.
So it there another way I can do this myself or should I just bring it to Fry's for $149? Â
Another question would be, after I recover the files, I'd like to upgrade my MacBook Pro 13 to a Solid State drive. I know I need a 2.5" SATA, but which brand/size is good for a $200-$300 budget?Â

I just bought a new WD hard disk and backed up all my data to it (80 GB). I then performed a clean install on my Macintosh HD.
Before I restored my data to the internal drive, I thought it would be a good idea to copy my fresh installation to a new partition on the external disk.
So I booted up disk utility to check if partitioning would affect my data. Using the partition tool, I clicked the plus sign (without applying changes). Disk utility said that if I add a partition, it would simply add a new volume and that the previous volume would not be erased. I clicked apply, and now there is nothing left of my data in the original partition.
Can I get it back? Undo the partition, or file recovery?
I'm erasing some partitions on a Mac that's leaving my possession, is Zero Out Data secure enough? To erase everything?

I've got a 2TB external drive with about 1.5TB of movies, Music etc. I've got another identical empty drive that I want to keep a backup of the first drive on. So my question is what is the best way of backing up this data? I thought of using disk utility(I'm running snow leopard 10.6.4 if that makes any difference) to created a mirrored RAID set. If I plug in the empty drive then create the RAID set will my first drive get wiped when the set is created? or with it leave the data on the first drive intact? Or should I just use something like crashplan to backup to the 2nd drive?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently updated to Lion Server 10.7.4 on my MacMini 5,3 (Mid 2011). Now whenever I use Lion Recovery (Ctrl-R at boot), the keyboard does not function. The mouse cursor moves around, but clicking the mouse button has no effect. I am unable to run any of the utilities (recovery, disk utility, etc.) and I am forced to press the power button to turn off the computer. I had no problems before 10.7.4.

When my old macbook will have inside the new hard disk do I need to reinstall tiger then upgrade it to snow leopard or I can directly install snow leopard?
I wanted to do a clean install and repartition my iMac running 10.8. It has 2 partitions. I booted from the recovery disk, went to Disk Utility and erased the two partitions. However, when I tried to change to a single partition got the error message "cannot unmount disk."Â

DATA RECOVERY SOFTWARE - OR - DATA RECOVERY COMPANIES?
I shot a film this summer on RED ONE digital camera, and now BOTH of my Lacie 2TB drives in which we deposited the footage aren't working. I NEED to recover data.
In researching here and online, I've looked into software options such as Data Rescue 3 and Disk Warrior.
I've also investigated companies in which you mail the drive into them. Lacie themselves recommended a CA outfit called Drive Savers Data Recovery; I've also investigated On Track Data Recovery (the world's largest), and ESS Data Recovery. There's also Tekserve here in Manhattan.
Does anyone have any experience with any of these options/companies specifically? Huge differences in price; everyone seems confident, ESS the most realistic.
What is the best route to recover my film?
The drives have about 800 GB of film footage - in the form of RED's proprietary software - R3D file extensions, plus Quicktime proxies.
Here are the drive issues:
DRIVE #1 - My Master copy of film: my iMac had OS 10.4.11; the drive mounted no problem; I upgraded a few days ago to Snow Leopard 10.6.4. Now it doesn't mount. It's in Disk Utility but the volume line is greyed out. The Apple Store folks tested my iMac and my drive and said it's the drive. They said it was just a coincidence that the drive developed an issue at the same time I upgraded my OS.
DRIVE #2 - was initialized in a Dell laptop, but NOT formatted.

DSII found the folders so how do I go about restoring them? Will I need an external drive that is atleast the same size as the files I want to recover? I have over 40GB of music but only a 8GB thumb drive.. Will it be possible for me to get my files back?
View 2 Replies View Relatedi have a hard drive that began as a formatted win NTFS drive, which i formatted with hfs a couple of times to do some hackintosh experimenting. apparently i missed one of the document folders that were important to me when i did the backup to a bigger drive of the windows files. i am looking into data recovery software but i don't know much about it. the format has changed, and it has been formatted a couple of times. is it still possbile to use data recovery software and are there any recommendations? if anyone feels i have a better chance getting this answered in a different part of the forum, let me know.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI tried using a freeware ( EXIF Untrasher) and a paid software (Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery Software) and both were unsuccessful in recovering deleted files on my CF Card. Both were only recovering the files that are still "present" on the card and not the ones deleted. Is there something else I can do? Please help as the files(photos)
