Tried to reset the SMC (apple's only advice)
Tried to kick it into boot menu... no luck
managed to boot to Leopard install disk. backed into Disk Utility.... Verify System Disk produces: "Invalid B-tree node size...Disk Verify / Repair fail".
too bad too sad... no more information.
I don't know enough to know whether this is a SW failure or a drive failure, and my searches has led me here.
Also, my very first post in a forum, I read the rules and I hope I have found the right forum for this query.
When I tried to power it on, it didn't work. There was no startup chime, but power controller was lighting. There was nothing on a display, it only flashed for a second but then nothing.. I have an aluminum Intel (2007) iMac and I have had it for two years now. I love my Mac and would never go back to a PC now, BUT (you knew that was coming) I have recently (unfortunately I don't know exactly when) developed a problem in that my iMac will not auto sleep. The screensaver will kick in OK, but it will not go to sleep on its own. I can put it to sleep from the menu manually, but not by the setting in System Preferences. I have reset the PRAM, and the SMC and neither of those changes have worked. Have any of you had this issue and solved it?

What does it do?
I hear the fans and hard drive and see the white/grey boot screen with the apple logo and spinning cog. The cog will spin for anything from 5 - 30 seconds before freezing. Some disk activity will continue for a short time afterwards before everything grinds to a halt?
I have a mid 2007 24" iMac. It has been slowing down recently.I'm not clear as to the problem.Might it be due to the fact that it is running the latest operating system, 10.7.2, bloated, with only 4G of memory?
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen ever I turn off my iMac (AL mid-2007 running 10.5) it seems like it hangs during shutdown. It takes about 60 seconds to shutdown and after about 30 seconds it starts to show. It looks like this, except it still shows my wallpaper... (This is just an image I found on the web). I am not sure why it is taking so long to shutdown lately... I don't remember it taking nearly this long in the past. Here is a photo of everything that is running during shutdown and it still does it. (I usually try to close out of apps before shutting down).

I'm only getting 3 bars, and my iMac is sitting less then a foot away from my AEBS, on 10.6 I was getting 4, also I've been dropping my WiFi connection every hour or so, and I have to turn AirPort in on my iMac off and turn AirPort back on.
This is really annoying and I don't know what to do, anyone have any ideas?
I've already reset my AEBS twice and that hasn't worked.

I bought my aluminum imac when it was released in late 2007. I had a 1 gigabyte stick up until now, but I decided to upgrade to 2x2 gigabyte sticks. When I took out the 1 stick and placed the new ones in, my computer would sound like it turned on, but the system really did not boot up. I have tried many configurations to see what the problem with the RAM is, and all I could figure out is that the computer will only boot up if the original 1 gig stick is in one slot. I checked both sticks with this, and they seem to register on my mac when I check the "About This Mac" section. Basically, I get a black screen if I use only a 2 gig stick, or both 2 gig sticks. I can have a maximum of 3 gigs so far, but I really would like all 4 that I paid for. I'm not so sure that it's a problem with the ram, especially because it is recognized by the system, but it can't boot up the system, so I am simply dumbfounded. Anyone have an idea what the problem is? I just recently installed Snow Leopard prior to getting the RAM if that has any importance.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently bought an used iMac (was purchased new in feburary 2009) in which I knew the screen was not showing any video when I bought it. ( I was okay with that I thought I'd give it a go at fixing) well the problem seems to be within the LCD itself. When I hit the power button I hear the chime, fan spins, and the hard drive does it's thing. I ended up taking the casing off the iMac to where it only shows the bottom half of the insides underneath the LCD. My question is now to diagnose what exactly is wrong with it by using the 4 led lights. I have searched the forums and the Internet up and down for which ones mean what but I have only found out information on older iMacs. When my iMac is off (still plugged in) LED 1 is on. When I turn the iMac on LED 1,2, and 3 are green. Which that leaves the 4th LED not being lit up at all. I suspect this has something to do with the iMac not showing any video but as I said I am not sure because I cannot find any information on it anywhere.

I got my imac in December 2007 from an Apple Store, but I can't seem to find anything that specifically says it is 'an early 2007' or 'late 2007' model. How do I know this? I have read that the 2007 model must be a late model. I also have 4 GB of memory, and it is an Intel core 2 duo. What I fit other qualifications after the answer to the 2007 model question is answered? Also, can I go straight from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion?

As I mentioned in a previous thread, I'm selling my iMac to buy a MacBook. The MacBook (2008 uMB) has arrived, with all the discs etc, which is brilliant.
My iMac however, came preloaded with Tiger, with a Leopard upgrade disc in the box. This Leopard disc has disappeared off the face of the planet, and so Apple are shipping one out to me, not sure when it will arrive. In the meantime, my auction ends tomorrow, so would it be possible to restore the iMac using the Leopard discs that have come with the MacBook, or is it safer to reinstall Tiger, and wait for the Leopard disc to arrive before shipping?
I tried to capture the video camera (Sony Handycam 2007) on to my iMac and it wont open till I need to install the sofeware MPEG file so where can I easy to download the free software on internet?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a G5 iMac - 2.1 ghz, 20", 250gb hd and 3gb ram, but it has been having problems starting up and it is also going to sleep midway through a task or at random times totally unprompted.
It now almost never starts up first time (I keep the iMac mains power lead always connected and the mains electricity supply turned on at all times now)- sometimes I will get the 'Start-up Chime' and then the cooling fans start spinning very loudly and then after a few seconds the iMac stops the start-up routine, but often when I try to start-up I don't even get the 'Start-up Chime' and I have to leave it for some time before trying again.
I can also now only get the iMac to run as a Firewire Target Disc by starting up with the T key held down and then using an old G4 (400mhz) Powerbook Titanium as the screen/keyboard by using the iMac HD as the startup disc for the Powerbook but this is obviously just a temporary work around.
I have also tried backing up all my data, and reinstalling the Mac OS X onto the iMac but the iMac still will not start-up normal and I still have to use it just as a Firewire HD.
I have an Intel IMAC, which is now out of warranty as I have had it for 16 months (and I was dumb enough not to get AppleCare). A few days back, my computer would not startup and everytime I hit the power button, I would hear some spinning noise but no chime from the iMAC. Yesterday, I tried it again and this time I heard the chime but the monitor did not start. I was then able to SSH into the MAC and see that it is indeed connected to the network and booted up, but the screen is still dead. Any ideas what I should do before the painful trip to the apple store ?

Based off of this score alone wouldn't it mean that the 2007 Mac Pro is faster than the newer 2010 imac
We had a pretty bad storm here last night and we had lost power. At the time my imac was on and obviously turned off when we lost power. A few moments after we lost power we regained power, but now my imac won't start. Any ideas of what have my happened and what I can do it try to fix it>
This is the first release since I got my iMac that I've been seriously thinking of upgrading. Seeing it equipped with such a poor graphics card somewhat makes me question it, though.
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone thinks it would be worthwhile upgrading from the 2007 24" to the base 27" that's just been released. I don't do any heavy rendering or anything like that but I do game quite a bit so I'd like something that can run newer games a bit better.
after hitting the power button I get the chime and then it takes several moments for the Apple logo and the spinner to pop up. After this it boots to the desktop quickly.
If I power up my MBP 13 in and iMac at the same time, the MBP clearly boots faster and the Apple logo pops up quickly.
My less than 2 yr old iMac will not start, the wheel is spinning for the last half hr, and nothing happens.

I'm new here, but not new to the Mac world. I own an intel iMac and while I was attempting to restart it on Sunday night it went into a gray screen with the box asking me to shut and restart in several languages. I did and still get stuck on that page. I did a PRAM reset and that didn't work. So I used my start up disk to get to the disk utility and my HD is fine so I used an external drive to install the OS on it and reboot from and reinstalled from TimeMachine (only problem is the last time I backed up was 5 months ago)Again I checked my internal drive and everything seems okay, but I cannot reboot from it.
