MacBook :: Using Built In 3g Modem?
Jul 27, 2009
today i'm setting off on an ambitious undertaking, building a wireless 3g modem (on the at&t network of course) that would fit into the MacBook airport card slot and act in place of it, therein giving me 3g internet signal anywhere i go. Only problem is, i have no idea how to do this, i was hoping you guys might be able to help

i know Internet Service Providers give away modem or routers these day but wouldn't be best if Apple made an Airport Extreme or Time Capsule with a built-in modems? if you check people questions on apple.com you will see have half of them want to know how to switch off the wireless connection on their Linksys and let Airport Extreme do that and the other half doesn't even know what Airport Extreme is for i know Apple has a habit of getting rid of stuff but anyone else agree this will drive Airport Extreme sales up? it would be the ultimate connection device for macs and no need for additional router.

Is there any sort of "bridge" software that allows a terminal emulation program, say, Z-Term, to use Skype as a modem? It seems silly to pay for connections to BBS's when I've got SkypeOut, but I haven't been able to find a way to do this.

i managed to get on the at&t all you can eat $29 data plan for ipad, but no longer have the ipad (gave it away, was not using it enough). however, i kept the sim.
i'm thinking of putting the microsim in a modem and using it in my mbp... however, i was hoping to get some recommendations. any one using one in the SD slot or a general USB one (the SD slot is why i posted this in the MBP forum, mods!).
realize the software is not built in, so that would be a pretty key requirement. i hate the idea of os 10.7 coming out and having to wait six months for drivers

Hi, I want to network 2 of my old mac book pros (2006) using an old DSL Modem/Router of mine. I don't want to connect to the internet using the modem, but just use the router capabilities of it. Is this possible?
I intend to use the connection to begin a small render farm for my designs!

My Black Macbook's (2.16GHz Core 2 Duo) in-built audio has suddenly stopped working. There is no 'Dong' at the startup. In the system profiler under the 'Audio (Built In)' tab it says that there is 'No Built-In Audio'. I can't change the volume or anything and in system prefs under sound is says no output devices are found. Has my soundcard fried? Is there anyway of replacing it fairly cheaply? My macbook is out of warenty unfortuantly! Is the only other option buying a cheap USB soundcard ? If so does anyone know of any slimline ones that would work?

I think built in batteries are a good idea , but having to give your computer to apple and pay 200.00 after your battery dies is not.
how have your built in battery experiences been?
do they last long as stated 7 hours?
not sure if i want to make the switch , i like my removable battery.

Recently got my first MBP and I love it, however felt the need to instal Windows 7 x64 to play games. There is one problem though, after trying everything and looking everywhere, or so I think, I have yet to get the built in Mic to work under windows 7 x64 to use it with skype or teamspeak.

Iv just bought my very first Apple Laptop and so after years of using Windows I am not very good with it yet. So basically the problem is I'm left handed and when I play games my right had sits on the trackpad to use the W, A, S, D keys, while in my left I'm using a HP USB plug n play mouse (untill i can aford a magic mouse). I need to disable the trackpad because its interfering while a play. I have been to "System Preferences > Trackpad" but there I see no disable option. Is there a way?

I've heard completely different things, saying I don't need antivirus software and I do. I sometimes use websites with a risk of viruses to watch TV programmes and films online or to download music etc, so perhaps it is safer to download some software?

My Macbook Pro has been having some problems with the built in webcam recently. It shuts itself off if I tilt the screen while using it (then the laptop tells me that there is no detected camera), and now, for the nth time, is not being recognized by my Macbook at all. I've done the special restart a few times in a row now (the one where you hold down the left Shift-Control-Option and the power button), and it still doesn't work. I went under System Information and the camera wasn't even detected there. What should I do?

Just got one of the new white macbooks - it's great so far. Most of the important things I have figured out, but unable to get my 3 USB Modem working - it just sits there and flashes at me. Wondered if any of you wise old Applers have come across a solution? Grateful for any advice. 3, despite saying that it works are useless.

got my mbp 15 i5 last week, ive been testing my battery, already recalibrated and all that.. i get 8+ hours on full charge on idle.. pretty average on normal use, around 5-6 hours. anyways so while i was testing my battery, i decided to unplug my usb broadband modem to see how much battery it's draining from my laptop. but to my surprise my battery life went down from approximately 3 hours left, to 2 and half ! i even waited 5 minutes so it can properly calculate it, but it didnt increase. so my question is wuzzup widat?! shouldnt it be the other way around? i was planning on canceling my wireless broadband contract when it expires and just wirelessly tether my newly jailbroken iphone via mywi for internet access, but its seems like wifi is a minus on the battery, but usb modems are actually a plus.
